Re:No Vehicles in the Park on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @09:46AM (#50352646)
Ah, content moderation policy again. I guess I'll take my shot at mentioning the Something Awful forums. For specific background: you had to pay a one-time fee of $10 to register and bans were handed out early and often. It was capricious and the policy amounted to "if I think you're causing trouble, you're gone". Overuse of memes, whining, etc were all fair targets.

For people who hold free speech as a cherished principle, this is abhorrent. But it (and other forums following suit) encouraged a more resilient Internet, IMO. The Internet was an archipelago of forums. You had to sign up individually and each had their own culture. And there were just some places you just. didn't. go. Stormfront's trash stayed over there and everyone liked it that way.

Then skip ahead in time: we have Reddit's Big Tent free speech approach and now we have to see if a skateboard is a vehicle. Moderation is a thankless unpaid job and the support just isn't there. Sometimes people are dragging your community/site into the sewer except all you have are downvotes, which are a total joke. It's just feeding the trolls. Hey, it wasn't an explicit call to violence against specific people so you can say whatever you want!

Is a skateboard a vehicle? I dunno. But if it's a private park at private expense and all non-skateboarders have left because they felt uncomfortable being there, it doesn't really matter.

Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:12AM (#50302856)
We've lost a lot of familiar celebrities this year but Patrick Stewart was a towering giant among nerds. TNG's stories will be timeless and Jean-Luc quotes feel homely and comforting.

I feel like a few years ago, there would have been no question about adding a black banner. Lately, Hacker News hasn't felt very "hacker-y". Corporate and legal concerns frequently outweigh freedom, talent, and curiosity in discussions.

Re:Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:32PM (#50291780)
Claude at least loves its punchy bullet points.

Also, I want to expunge the word "shape" from my vocabulary at this point. I think I'm developing a nerve twitch just reading it.

The Hortman's, who were actual elected politicians, were assasinated before Kirk so no?

And what does any of that have to do with a Government-run, nation-wide spying operation?

Re:Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @10:56AM (#50274740)
Wouldn't they retain a lot of ability to do that from abroad? A wealth tax targets wealth in your country. We've seen plenty of loopholes for foreign political influence lately and I don't think there are any laws against non-residents holding majority shares in US companies, right?
Re:Shitter – A Nitter Fork on Friday October 23, 2026 @11:31AM (#50210724)
You don't need to go anywhere to see that Musk is far right. If you're going to claim otherwise, you're gonna need to bring some solid evidence.

The "left" spans such a huge range right now that to be "not left" is basically far right. A Republican opposing Trump is _extremely_ rare (and usually excommunicates them from the party) while on the left, you have AOC, Omar, etc actively sharing a party with Fetterman and Manchin. Right/far-right was a thing in the 2010's but not any more.

Easy workaround: If you were not actually convicted of a crime, you can not be pardoned for it.

It's not how we've treated pardons in the past but the US has abandoned that as a deciding factor everywhere else. Tell me why that's not a valid interpretation of the Constitution.

Re:What shall I teach my son? on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:42AM (#50179937)
Activities and homework would have ended it in a couple of years anyway and that's really why it hasn't come back - lack of time.
Re:What shall I teach my son? on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @08:43PM (#50174667)
Not really. I took both kids shopping with me. One preschool age, one first grade. They got little quests to find things through the store.

Sadly COVID kinda of ended the tradition.

I do not support restrictions on the freedom of speech.

However, arguing that a political party isn't evil because it was elected is absurd. The idea is neither supported by history nor current events.

"Both sides" has become a pretty transparent tactic to deflect the magnitude of the difference.

> If the AfD were really as bad as people here pretend they are then they won’t get elected.

Using this logic, please explain MAGA in the US. Arguably worse than AfD and currently holding power in all 3 branches of government.

Yeah but if you sell that box/stuff to another person, they own it now and shouldn't be bound by your rules. If that's not true, I didn't actually buy anything. I just paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to have my name put on someone else's contract without being able to negotiate any terms.

It's like "buying" digital movies. The button says Purchase but you/Amazon still get to dictate terms long after the sale.

Re:ICE Planning $100M 'Nightmare' Domestic Spy Program on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @03:55PM (#50094116)
It's counter productive because what roads are you going to block? Cities are Blue, even in Texas.

There were larger protests at ICE concentration camps but ICE made it clear that they'd use deadly force to disperse them. From the Left, the worry was that Trump would invoke the Insurrection Act to suspend elections, deploy the military, etc.

Trump doesn't want to look unpopular and he will give anything to avoid that, including letting innocent people die. It's as simple and as disgusting as that.

He started a war with Iran to look big and tough for his cult. That failed spectacularly and now he'll sacrifice anything and anyone to avoid the consequences of his actions.

The Youtuber is in Canada which may have a different legal underpinning for Flock than the US.

Re:Keyboard differences between Windows and Macs on Friday October 09, 2026 @09:23AM (#50020189)
Linux for home. Mac for work. At least once a night I try to jump to the address bar in Firefox and accidentally lock the screen instead (win/cmd-L).

The Mac boosters here would be hilariously quaint if it wasn't so frustrating. Docker images that only work on macOS Docker and break on regular Linux. Quips like "Mac is so much more reliable, just use a Mac for Docker!" that I think are genuine opinion rather than a smug joke.

Between this, AI, and all the other brain rot trends, working in tech is so depressing these days.

Usually that blocked message indicates that your country has restrictions on news media (e.g. cookie laws, PII collection, etc), not the originating country. I think you have this backwards.
> The "gulf coast" link does not work due to limitations on free speech in the USA.

I am really not following this logic at all. Can someone explain?

Except this time, the regime in charge taking public action to tamper and interfere with elections, including threats of intimidation at polling stations. Red state governments are outright gloating that they're gerrymandering their districts based on party lines to retain power.

Even if Dems take the House and Senate, this can't be called a fair election.

Re:Ukraine Can't Stop Russia's Jet-Powered Shahed Drone on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @04:05PM (#49913592)
You're talking about APKWS rockets. 70mm rockets (practically free) equipped with a laser seeker.
China has an awful lot of billionaires for a communist country.

Neither appellation is true and probably never was.

Re:Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields on Thursday September 17, 2026 @12:37PM (#49743247)
False.

On an earlier HN economic story, someone provided data showing that this is entirely the responsibility of Republican administrations. Going back to Eisenhower, the Deficit has only increased under Republican Presidents and only decreased under Democratic ones (with one exception, Johnson was slightly positive in Deficit increase).

Re:macOS 27 Golden Gate: The Ars Technica Review on Thursday September 17, 2026 @08:28AM (#49739791)
I find window management in macOS to be fundamentally broken. I heavily organize using workspaces and I don't understand why it does the things it does. Windows are opened on workspaces that aren't active and where those windows have never been present before. Changing workspaces on one monitor and activating a window will cause a different monitor's workspace to change (because that app had a window there). Sometimes newly opened windows appear with ~5 pixels visible on the screen (versus where that window was previously).

It feels haunted or possessed by demons. Like it's a middle school bully trying be as frustrating as humanly possible.

I hate to break it to you but this drama has been going on for 10+ years. Remember birther conspiracies?
Re:You Rename My Lake – I Move My Hosting on Monday August 31, 2026 @03:26PM (#49513865)
Like summer heat records, the past 3 protests have been the largest by percentage and by sheer population in US history.

GQP controls both the House and Senate, plus SCOTUS. And Republicans have been a monolithic bloc since Gingrich instituted a no-compromise policy. Even if Jeffries wasn't a waste of oxygen, there's not much more that could be done.

Re:Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable on Monday August 31, 2026 @08:59AM (#49509220)
Yeah, I discovered the same concept for HDMI and USB C->A. The HDMI one is especially useful.

It'd be super handy to have a wired failsafe while traveling without dragging an ethernet cable around for no reason.

Re:Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable on Monday August 31, 2026 @08:42AM (#49508991)
Oh. My. God. I thought you were just going to link a network dongle. "Yeah, I have a drawer of those". It never occurred to me that you could point it in the other direction.

I'm ordering a dozen. Okay, maybe 3. But still, those look amazing.

Re:Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable on Monday August 31, 2026 @08:35AM (#49508929)
ifconfig still probably works on Linux too but it's discouraged because, frankly, it sucks compared to ipconfig2. Most of macOS' CLI feels old and crusty. Which makes sense when you realize it's a fossilized niche BSD from the early 00's.
The explanation there seems pretty obvious. Simplified:

Trump's disapproval is all Democrats.

DNC's disapproval is all Republicans plus many/most Democrats (for not opposing Trump hard enough).
