Re:PowerToys – open-source Windows utilities on Sunday May 08, 2022 @11:48AM (#31305109)
Isn't it ironic that the operating system called "Windows" offers one of the worst window management user experiences?
Amazon. Amazon Pay has been the worst offender and every purchase using Amazon Pay has leaked my Amazon email to third parties.
Re:Twitter's new Tor onion service on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @01:43PM (#30618409)
I believe Twitter is trying to be better though and it appears they do chip away at this. They have also been in a difficult situation between cancel culture and free speech absolutism. Determining the reasonable solution is hard when the extreme edges and vocal minorities are yelling at you. My personal hope is that Twitter will further crack down on the very low hanging bots / trolls / alt accounts - there are many especially young accounts with handles like @Name359345809 which don't contribute to the platform in any way.
Free Speech for individuals does not mean that we have an interest in allowing foreign and potentially hostile actors to run propaganda campaigns using the ad targeting machine we have built using social media. They can say what they want and every citizen can do so as well, but we should not allow asymmetric amplification.
Not just that solar is the cheapest but nuclear is also the second most expensive option. I really don't understand this recent flood of pro-nuclear posts on HN.

Given that mountains are a result of geological activity, this is for sure the worst place to store it. You'll have a better chance digging out a big hole in the desert - which the EU doesn't have.
Re:Intel chief Pat Gelsinger: Too many chips made in Asia on Wednesday March 24, 2021 @11:00PM (#26576073)
That doesn't matter. If they want to export TO the US they are subject to US export laws. The US has a history of their economical and political power forcing companies that have no business with the US to do their bidding to stay in business. Just look at the Iran sanctions.

More than 3 GB/s are possible. Like you said 10 MB of JSON is a breeze.

Re:Bitcoin and other PoW coins are an ESG nightmare on Monday February 15, 2021 @08:34AM (#26142559)
He means a Dyson swarm and we are not centuries away from achieving this. The economical sense is on a different paper. Having ASIC miners in space connecting to something like Starlink is entirely possible even though not cost effective. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyson_sphere#Dyson_swarm
3 months in advance is the legal limit, it's great. We also love our contract bindings for 2 years. Cunsumer friendliness here is heresy.

> Part of the problem with electronics is often a brand new unit costs less than replacing a faulty part

This is only partially true. The true cost is hidden and at least by average people like me immeasurable. We are putting a lot of cost out of sight if you consider the environmental impact of e-waste.

> Dec 2017

I am fairly certain over 3 years passed since then.

Re:Tether price manipulation on Friday January 08, 2021 @12:04PM (#25686804)
This sounds incredibly illegal. I can't imagine trading like this is wanted by legislators and even if Tether is currently backed 1:1 there is no way that legislators will allow this to keep happening eventually crashing the entire Tether currency into the ground.
I am not a US citizien but I'd still like to thank you for taking time out of your day to explain. I wish politics would generally be more transparent about their intentions but I guess it wouldn't be politics then. It's always hard to find out the intentions of thresholds and numbers as the models behind them are never communicated through the media.
Re:How bad is your Spotify? on Wednesday December 23, 2020 @10:58AM (#25518912)
Spotify became entirely unusable for me when I started using Bluetooth headphones on my computer. When I turn them off, Spotify goes into some weird attempt to play every single song in rapid succession as it has no Output device to play to. Finally crashing so bad that I have to end the process and reopen it. It doesn't help that I've reported that a long time ago and even though the QA triage should have marked this as a low hanging fruit, nothing has happened. // rant end, I know this post doesn't help anything but venting is always a form of self-therapy haha
In an ideal world that'd mean we become architecture agnostic and solutions should work on any CPU entering the market while ARM has still not achieved majority support on desktop solutions. Sadly I am certain there will be an extremely painful phase in which some software runs a lot better (more than the instruction set would explain) on some hardware and not on others. Driver support is going to be really poor and tech support will be a very secure job for the coming decade.. hah :)

Sadly this is often unfeasible if your site relies on reCAPTCHA. Are there any cookie-free GDPR compliant captcha options?
Re:Amazon disallows pointing out paid reviews on Friday December 18, 2020 @01:50AM (#25464513)
Amazon is truly the AliExpress of the west and they are running the quality down faster and faster. A dead giveaway is the fact that there are tons of rebrands of the same product whenever you look for something. If I want the China product I go directly to AliExpress and get the unbranded version and don't need to pay the 100-300% premium on Amazon.
Re:AirPods Max on Tuesday December 08, 2020 @08:57AM (#25345098)
This is just demonstrably not true. Bluetooth Hands-Free mangles the sample rate to 16 / 24 kHz. See this video for a collection of pretty much all common devices from "this decade". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifmGS_WWk7o
Re:AirPods Max on Tuesday December 08, 2020 @08:45AM (#25344904)
Especially if you consider the inherent issues with Bluetooth call quality. No matter how good their microphones in them are, they will mangle the audio back to the 90s. $549 seems entirely detached and I am baffled, even as an ANC enthusiast.
The entire system of affiliate links piss me off for the same reason I have to pay the same in cash as people using a creditcard.

It has a taste of paying too much if the vendor can afford to give a fraction to the affiliate.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account...

I've started using them recently to have entirely seperate environments for personal and work websites and it's a blessing. Previously I used 2 browsers just like you, now I have the unlimited power of Firefox AdBlockers in every environment.

Re:Netflix raises monthly charges for U.S. subscribers on Friday October 30, 2020 @12:39AM (#24939226)

Re:Uber sends political ads through push notifications on Thursday October 22, 2020 @07:16PM (#24864357)
I used Uber once in LA almost 2 years ago and live in Germany. I received an email from them to vote in their interest sending a sponsored MADD campaign letter. (lol)
Re:Discipline Doesn’t Scale on Wednesday October 21, 2020 @04:37AM (#24845912)
I am actually interested in your context. Usually the return on investment analysis favors features over performance especially in a B2B environment.
Re:Discipline Doesn’t Scale on Wednesday October 21, 2020 @03:35AM (#24845584)
The key is that hardware has marketpreassure to become faster and faster. Software gets faster if there is market preassure (see gaming & financial). When the feature backlog is more important than performance that is obviously what is prioritized. You obviously can't work on everything.
Did you look at the tweet and it's content?
Well there are three possibilities 1) Reduce Infections: You try to get infections down to zero. 2) Ignore Infections: Usually used for common cold. People even go to work with it. 3) Limit Infections: You dynamically scale meassures to stay at a defined limit. In this case a number derived from hospital capacity.
This is a very good point, but sadly in reality it seems these goals are purposely hidden or obscured for subjective gain or unpopluar ideological reasons.

Initially the pandemic response was about "not overwhelming the hospitals", but it seems some politicians disagree on the fundamental direction. I'd just be happy if my government had a clear policy on their goal. Do they want to reduce infections or do they want to prevent overwhelming emergency services?

Obviously my knowledge on facts is very limitted, I simply don't have time for that, but the news still report lots of capacity in hospitals.

You should be able to get the cost down significantly by caching on cloudflare. My company managed to deliver 99.9%+ from cloudflare for static pages and allowed us to serve large amounts of traffic from a small backend.
