I loved my BeBox, but what would be the modern equivalent of the GeekPort? I've been using esp32/nRF52/etc boards for uart/spi/i2c/i2s/pwm-type work... it feels like hardware hacking on a desktop is a lost art.
Re:Commodore 1600 VICmodem on Friday October 30, 2026 @10:02AM (#50304044)
A friend found one discarded in a phone booth, and gave it to me, the only VIC-20 owner he knew.

It changed my life. It gave me places to go when I really needed them. It gave me an escape. I am forever grateful.

Shoutout to the rest of the PhoneLine Phantoms, Army BBS, Datanet, and especially Paladin's Palace, for which I can still dial the number on a rotary phone in the dark.

It only works while the glasses are in pairing mode. This is useless.
Thrustmaster FCS & WCS MK1 for me. And as much as I'd love to play it again, it will never be the same.

Advertising packets only go out on startup and pairing, not during normal operation.

I'm more interested in the technology they've acquired to kill, like buying up every company making assistive technology for the blind and then destroying them to make their facial unlock feature.
With that frequency range, I really hope the people using it have radio licenses.
Re:IPv6 address, as a sentence you can remember on Wednesday April 01, 2026 @08:34PM (#47608563)
I'm old. I can't remember breakfast.
As someone who watched the Apollo 11 launch live on TV, this is no less awe-inspiring. This transcends nations, languages, and politics. This is of and by all humanity.

(If anyone managed to get the perfect shot of the spark-filled separation feed, please share. That was... incredible.)

Now if someone could find a way to read the scrawled engineer's names etched on the inner part of the vinyl so I could figure out what edition I have in under an hour, I'd be really happy.
Ship it with Sequoia and you have a deal.
Oh, I'm a former phone phreak in my late 50s who's about to start yet another (last?) startup. I come here because the level of discourse and mutual-respect is far-away above the alternatives.
Are you saying that I can make my MacBook Pro sound like an IBM Selectric II with a negligible performance hit? I will attempt to hide your identity from my wife for as long as possible, but I make no promises.
Re:Stuffit – 30 Years of File Compression on Saturday February 17, 2024 @10:51AM (#39410546)
I was at Stuy with him -- he was always very nice.

He was also a big Ddial user.

Re:Why do military personnel wear watches upside down? on Friday February 16, 2024 @02:17PM (#39401678)
I wear them on my ankle, so I know what time it is when I cross my legs.
Re:Bob Moore, Who Founded Bob's Red Mill, Is Dead at 94 on Wednesday February 14, 2024 @04:14PM (#39375473)
He won the Golden Spurtle at the World Porridge Championships in Scotland in 2016, a rare honor. Rest in porridge.
