Re:Show HN: This website moves your mouse cursor on Friday April 02, 2021 @02:37PM (#26674414)
My high school claim to fame was a VB.NET application I wrote during class that would connect directly to my server to download flash games since online flash games were constant cat and mouse. I had hotkeys so you could hide the whole thing from screen and taskbar on a whim. My flash repository was still getting hits for years after I graduated, though that tapered off a little while ago.
It allows them to keep the walled garden intact. A 3rd party app marketplace would need to install apps to the device and would require a different permissions model to anything available on the App Store today.
Re:Is There a Case for Programmers to Unionize? on Wednesday March 24, 2021 @09:06PM (#26575329)
This seems likely to be the case. Perhaps there is a way to design a test such that it measures how quickly one can become capable in some informal "programming language" designed specifically for said test?
Re:Nobody designs for small iPhone devices anymore on Sunday March 21, 2021 @06:29AM (#26529427)
This sounds right on in my experience, though I would say a truly good UX designer should know the usability of what they're designing in Figma and understand those limitations enough to work with a developer during the design process if needed to refine a non-standard action/animation.
Re:Namecheap just snaked another domain off me on Wednesday March 03, 2021 @08:44AM (#26328174)
If they're really doing this (and I don't particularly doubt it) someone should script up a little bot to search for domain names that are likely to trigger the mechanism. Find word clouds around some of the newer domains like .quest with characters under a certain limit...

...or perhaps that's feeding the beast and namecheap will be thanking us in 5 years when people are knocking down their doors for the hot domains we generated.

Re:Automating my job with GPT-3 on Wednesday January 27, 2021 @01:14PM (#25931665)
He's our fastest business analyst but sometimes on a hot day he'll just keep repeating "Syntax Error"...

Very cool work, I continue to be blown away by what GPT-3 can achieve.

Re:Apple Silicon Mac Is About to Kill Web Apps on Thursday November 19, 2020 @04:43AM (#25147810)
Slack's iOS app is written in Obj-C and Swift[1]. I think the author's suggestion was that the macOS desktop app built with Electron will become obsolete because the superior iOS version will be able to run on macOS.

Re:Ev Williams has lost his goddamn mind on Wednesday March 22, 2017 @11:38PM (#13937238)
The day I can pay 10 cents to read an article through various sources will be the day I start paying to read online articles.
I'm interested in why you consider Messages a social network? To me, Messages is an iteration on MMS, analogous to the transition from SMS to MMS.

Messages can only be used by Apple customers, but this is not indicative of a social network and would detract from the value of a legitimate social network.

Re:Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around? on Tuesday February 28, 2017 @06:41PM (#13759420)
On iOS it takes a single TouchID auth and a few message prompts to sign up for a recurring subscription - you won't ever be asked for payment again. I'm certain Android is similarly streamlined.
Re:A trip down the League of Legends graphics pipeline on Thursday January 19, 2017 @07:08PM (#13440658)
It seems more like there was an unusual spike that wore off quickly [1]. Still, an order of magnitude fewer viewers than LoL [2].

Re:Ask HN: Is phonegap/cordova still relevant? on Wednesday October 12, 2016 @02:19PM (#12695283)
Xamarin provides a bunch of generic controls that act as bridges to their corresponding platforms. It has enough flexibility that you can build the UI code from scratch for each platform, but you could probably put together a simple form based application with a single UI source.
