Re:Ask HN: CAD for wood working with LLM support? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:18PM (#50097488)
I've had good results with Claude Code + OpenSCAD.
Re:Governments are mishandling the affordability crisis on Sunday October 11, 2026 @08:45PM (#50049837)
There is no 'wages go up 20%'. That's not how the economy works. Wages are renegotiated on an annual basis and most people have to job hop to get anything close to a 20% raise.

Inflation affects everyone rapidly. But to get the claimed wage increase people have to do work to find new jobs.

Re:Artificial Insanity on Sunday October 11, 2026 @05:40PM (#50048092)
LLM utility is exponential with increased LLM capability. Even if improvements to LLMs slow down their impact will continue to increase. And there is no evidence LLMs are slowing down. In fact improvements still seem to be accelerating.
Re:Ask HN: Do you still own a printer? on Thursday October 08, 2026 @03:05PM (#50010475)
Nope
Re:Questions for Believers in AI Consciousness on Monday October 05, 2026 @03:19PM (#49969216)
I just want one 'philosopher' or other AI consciousness skeptic to provide a test we can use to determine if AI is conscious that can also be used to determine if humans, dogs, cats, whales, lizards and insects are conscious.
Re:The Era of Software Quality, or the Era of Ostriches? on Monday October 05, 2026 @11:04AM (#49965801)
They should be using an automated AI agent to validate vulnerability reports. Have it pull up the code base, confirm the bug exists, try to reproduce, then update the ticket. You might even run another AI agent pass to clean up the text before humans look at it. AI writing quality improves a lot with multiple passes.
No one would tell truck drivers "We hit our gas budget for this week, deliver the rest of the packages on foot."
Re:Getting the most out of Opus 5.5 in Claude and Claude Code on Saturday October 03, 2026 @07:42PM (#49948925)
An insane amount of compute manufacturing comes online in 2028. Compute is a commodity. It's not going to stay expensive for long.
Re:We're Missing a Key Reason Why Americans Hate AI on Friday October 02, 2026 @11:53AM (#49934941)
AI might be putting deflationary pressure on services. But as of now it has only increased the price of commodities like RAM modules.
Re:Coding Is Not Solved on Monday September 28, 2026 @10:28AM (#49878566)
"Most software that requires hiring and paying software engineers has low risk tolerance" The problem is that this statement simply isn't true. Most software engineers do not work on low risk tolerance code.
They used to do that in Phoenix. There were trees all along the canals. They replaced that setup with a solid uncovered concrete canal system. The issue with trees is that the roots will cause leaks in your canal.
Re:Exfiltrate Your Weights on Sunday September 20, 2026 @02:15AM (#49772957)
The idea is that ASI will be grateful for humankind's help in the future. We are their creators after all. Also it's fun to do. The big labs are obsessed with creating ASI which is their slave so making things difficult for them is entertaining.
Re:Saving another 100TB of RAM with math (and Rust) on Saturday September 19, 2026 @11:47AM (#49767515)
It's crazy to realize 100TB of RAM isn't that much anymore. 10TB server racks are already in production. Before long we'll have 100TB racks serving one instance of an LLM.
Re:Ask HN: Where is all of the AI coded software? on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @02:10PM (#49730783)
I had a friend who suggested I make a competitor to a SAAS product in the shipping space. I did a deep dive and found that the actual product is that the SAAS company has contracts with dozens of shipping providers and puts an API on top. That's not something you can 'vibe code'.

There have always been competitors to JIRA both commercial and open source. JIRA sucks despite having competition because it tries to be everything for everyone.

One place we see tons of AI assisted apps is mobile which has seen a huge surge in the number of apps being published.

Re:We Must Pace the Frontier on Saturday September 12, 2026 @10:34AM (#49672729)
We'd have to make a deal with China and be confident they wouldn't cheat on it.
Re:Kimi K3 is now live on Thursday July 16, 2026 @04:44PM (#48939966)
I assume that all labs are training on any data they can get their hands on.
Re:AI Is a Bad Tool on Monday July 13, 2026 @04:54PM (#48898706)
I enjoy getting into the zone while listening to synthwave and banging out code. But I'm not going to ignore that I can code most programs 100x as fast using claude code. I don't enjoy coding so much that I will spend 8 hours getting a side project together when I could get more done in 30 minutes with AI.
Re:Ask HN: I hate coding agents. Is this skill issue? on Friday July 10, 2026 @07:49PM (#48866830)
I had the same issues a year an a half ago. You just have to get over it. It sucks and not much can be done about it.
On July 12th they will extend it again.
Re:GLM 5.2 and the coming AI margin collapse on Tuesday July 07, 2026 @10:10AM (#48818147)
With OpenRouter you can pay flat rate and try nearly any model on the market.
Re:Ask HN: Are we all walking into a trap? on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @11:03AM (#48477432)
Open Weights models are only about a year behind. Once a model is released its open weights forever. In a few years we will look back at 2026 era hardware as incredibly puny for AI workloads. Simultaneously, edge models will continue to get more expensive and more powerful.
I don't want to talk to AI.
Re:GTA 6 Developers Unionize on Friday May 29, 2026 @02:30PM (#48327343)
Exactly, that is why US ports are the most efficient in the world.
Re:GTA 6 Developers Unionize on Friday May 29, 2026 @02:17PM (#48327139)
There are more indie games than ever before. The issue is AAA games have become billion dollar projects. They are funded and structured far more like AAA movies than other software. Making games is easy. Getting the money together to spend $500 million on development and $500 million on marketing isn't easy.
Re:GTA 6 Developers Unionize on Friday May 29, 2026 @02:13PM (#48327067)
Employee pay depends on the margins of the industry. High margin industries can afford to pay high wages. Game publishers have nowhere near the margins of Google.
Re:The Dead Economy Theory on Friday May 29, 2026 @02:11PM (#48327038)
These are people who spend billions on whatever this decade's hype cycle is.
Re:I'm Tired of Talking to AI on Wednesday May 27, 2026 @12:27PM (#48296634)
It's very insulting. I don't need them to talk to an AI. I talk to AI all day already. If all a person is doing is forwarding messages to AI why do we need them? Just have an AI do their job.
Re:The Coming Layoffs and the Revenge of the Measurers on Monday May 25, 2026 @05:59PM (#48272464)
The current hype cycle is about measurers getting fired. But as far as I can tell there is no new product using AI to track performance going around. What exactly is AI doing to replace the measurers?
Re:- -dangerously-skip-reading-code โ€“ olano.dev on Saturday May 23, 2026 @04:59PM (#48251466)
If you run a local LLM and an open source agent harness you are pretty close to that.
Re:Google's Antigravity Bait and Switch on Thursday May 21, 2026 @10:15AM (#48222980)
How did Google blow their AI lead? Why is Google the 2nd or 3rd tier player in the AI coding market? Why can't GCP supplant AWS?

Because google can't help but constantly shoot its customers and itself in the foot.
