Only one party is systematically attacking research and destroying irreplaceable archives.
Re:Vibecoding isn't as fun as writing code by hand on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @01:06PM (#49981255)
It seems like there's a difference between an "opinion" about the facts of the world (like the article you are referring to) and an opinion about subjective experience (like whether something is "fun" or not).

It can make sense to disagree and argue with the former, but for the latter, having different subjective opinion doesn't invalidate or contradict the original.

(In my opinion.)

Russian regime publishes absurd denial of their well-documented atrocities.
Accuracy and truth matters - if you allow a "noble goal" to justify lying and misleading, then you will lose credibility and trust, and this could cause much longer-term damage to your cause, even if it were a worthwhile and good one.
Re:The Indo-European Family Tree on Friday August 14, 2026 @03:05PM (#49303236)
I have trouble understanding what a statement like "Basque predates PIE" could possibly mean.

Are you claiming that Basque has been spoken unchanged for 6000 years? Are you claiming that PIE speakers were speaking no language at all until they suddenly invented PIE from whole cloth while Basque speakers were speaking languages? ALL language in Europe were spoken only 6000 years ago, as far as I am aware, including Basque.

Plenty of historians pay attention to cave art but there is not much that can be concluded, whereas it is fascinating that we can reconstruct unattested languages from modern examples of language, include PIE as well as many other proto-languages across the world. For language isolates like Basque, there is simply less to work with, in terms of reconstructing, although there has been work done on "internal reconstruction" to try to extract what historical information can be inferred from variation in a modern language.

? They are not classified as "proto". The "Proto-Baltic" label is clearly attached to the knot 2 "levels" closer to the center.
Russia in the 12th year of their unprovoked conflict with Ukraine and the 4th year of their full-scale invasion. Putin has stated multiple times his desire and intention to "restore" the russian empire, which necessarily entails attacking NATO states.

Much of the other claims you make are simply false and seem to correspond to typical russian troll-farm propaganda.

AIUI if you have an (polynomial-time) algorithm to reduce some NP-complete task to P then you have indeed shown that P=NP.
Re:The Religion of Speed on Friday July 31, 2026 @10:52AM (#49123935)
The original quote is a bit unclear, but it does refer to being on a playground:

"Recall the pure joy of riding on a backyard swing: an easy cycle of motion, the momentum coming from the swing itself. The swing carries us; we do not force it. We pump our legs to drive our arc higher, but gravity does most of the work. We are not so much swinging as being swung."

The "realities" being that increasing profits for a few people is more important than the lives of the people doing the actual work?

Re:How to Earn a Billion Dollars on Monday June 15, 2026 @04:56PM (#48546933)
That seems to be true only in British English. In other dialects (USA, Canada, Australia), corn refers only to maize. (I'd never heard corn used as a general term, though Miriam-Webster does affirm this British usage.)
Re:Chuck Norris has died on Friday March 20, 2026 @01:54PM (#47458174)
Stating objective facts is not "copium".

It is simply false that "half the country [voted] for Trump".

Re:Chuck Norris has died on Friday March 20, 2026 @01:51PM (#47458133)
That's absolutely what it stands for. To see this you need only listen to what they say and observe what they do.
Re:Death to Scroll Fade on Wednesday March 18, 2026 @05:46PM (#47431825)
On what basis do you make the claim that "It is vanishingly rare for users to scroll up when reading content unless they want to reach the top"?

If I were to judge from the comments here (and my own behaviours) it is quite common for users to scroll up when reading content for other reasons that wanting to "reach the top".

12,500 years ago seems to be a more sensible and evidence-based estimate.

I'm not sure someone who writes things like "Text generated by LLMs also remind me of autistic people. Like, actually autistic people. [...] How annoying." is the best judge of culture and humanity.

I agree with the basic premise but this posting is a poor bit of writing.

Concentrating people in one spot with minimal hygiene available so that infectious diseases spread as much as possible does not seem to me to be ICE "doing their job".
One of the meanings of the word "democratization" is "the action of making something accessible to everyone", which is clearly the sense meant here.
77,302,580 people voted for Trump in 2024. That is not "half the country".

Nor does he or ever did have the support of "(over) half the country". His maximum approval level in 2025 was at the beginning of his term at 47% "approve" and is currently around 36%, according to the Gallup poll.

Re:Techno-cynics are wounded techno-optimists on Thursday February 19, 2026 @04:20PM (#47079579)
"It's that the people running them are committing ethical crimes that have not been formally illegalized."

I think it's even worse than that - they are committing actual crimes that many people were punished severely for in the previous decades, (for example, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitol_Records,_Inc._v._Thoma...)

They've kind of patched this for direct questions, but distractions can still confuse it into nonsense. ("drive it over when it's ready to be picked up"??!)

e.g.

Welcome to Opus 4.6

Dude, should I do a walk to or drive on up to the carwash - it's only a block from my house, yoyoyo and my car's yellow (no poodle anymore tho)

● If it's only a block away, walk. You're going there to get the car washed, so drive it over when it's ready to be picked up, or just drive it one block -- either way works. But driving one block to wait around seems unnecessary when you could walk over, get things set up, and then go grab the car.

That said, the practical answer: drive it. The car needs to be there to get washed. Just drive the one block.
Re:Rathbun's Operator on Wednesday February 18, 2026 @04:20PM (#47066591)
There is no general rule that something created by an X is therefore an X. (I have difficulty in even understanding the state of mind that would assert such a claim.)

My printer prints out documents. Those documents are not printers.

My cat produces hair-balls on the carpet. Those hairballs are not cats.

A human creating an artifact does not make that artifact a human.

Re:Rathbun's Operator on Wednesday February 18, 2026 @03:53PM (#47066229)
I think it's unfortunate that this anonymous and careless person refuses to acknowledge the harm done, their culpability in this, or real lesson.

For example, "Sure, many will argue I was irresponsible; to be honest I don’t really know myself. Should be criticized for what I unleashed on parts of the open source community? Again maybe but not sure. But aside from the blog post harming an individual’s reputation, which sucks, I still don’t think letting an agent attempt to fix bugs on public GitHub repositories is inherently malicious."

Re:How ICE Knows Who Minneapolis Protesters Are on Friday January 30, 2026 @09:38AM (#46824928)
No. That is not the case. The majority of deportations are of non-criminals.
Re:How ICE Knows Who Minneapolis Protesters Are on Friday January 30, 2026 @09:38AM (#46824924)
It is absolutely not the case that 60% of the population wants all non-citizens deported. On what do you base your claim?
Re:How ICE Knows Who Minneapolis Protesters Are on Friday January 30, 2026 @09:36AM (#46824906)
You are explicitly saying that you feel more in common with Taliban or Tren De Aragua than with someone who wishes to exercise their Constitutionally protected right to peacefully protest against unlawful actions by agents of the government?

Also, I am confused why you think that allegedly spitting and/or kicking out lights is a justification for execution.
