News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Saris

The downside is it warns me if I update things will probably break and to take a backup, I've always been wary of updating my openwrt router because of that.
Re:Herdr has released native app on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:32PM (#50312005)
Not having a normal installer/uninstaller is a weird trend, I dislike these powershell scripts that dump stuff all over and have no way to uninstall it after.

Especially when it's an AI agent tool and an AI agent can probably make an EXE installer in a few minutes.

As far as I'm aware Projectivy Launcher gets a lot of permissions it should not have, and it's closed source.. Feels like trading one privacy invasion for another.

The more I read about consumer network hardware the more happy I am that I don't use it.
Re:OpenCode 2.0 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:49PM (#50097264)
What the heck is this website, it completely locks up the tab it's in for 15 seconds and none of the text shows up at all until it finishes.
Re:Solar Panels That Plug into Your Wall on Monday October 12, 2026 @11:58AM (#50058308)
The EG4 12kPV does 8kw split phase output and is $3k, but haven't seen anything smaller than that yet.
Re:Solar Panels That Plug into Your Wall on Monday October 12, 2026 @11:44AM (#50058079)
These sync with the grid and also have safety mechanisms to avoid backfeeding if the grid is down (or it's unplugged).
Re:I paid people to try and follow my README on Sunday October 11, 2026 @08:48AM (#50042759)
Generally it seems like good READMEs assume you have a compatible OS ready to go, but will give you a summary of all commands to get a working setup from there.
Re:Bitwarden Dual License Model on Saturday October 10, 2026 @12:59PM (#50034806)
There are several good Android Keepass clients, and Syncthing apps too.

The main thing is it's just slow as molasses, just clicking the extension icon can sometimes take over a second to show anything.

And it frequently fails to detect login fields, or does detect but fails to fill them with a generic error.

Looking at the flatpak manifest it has `share=ipc` but no directories shared.. I'm not sure on flatpaks defaults for what it would actually have access to on the host.
Re:postmarketOS Rebrand: Nura on Sunday September 27, 2026 @10:19PM (#49872822)
Nura means nothing to me, PostmarketOS described what it is (OS), with a hint of what kind of OS it might be.
Re:I Gave My Life over to Meta's A.I. Agent and Was Blown Away on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @12:56PM (#49804399)
Whenever I try to make 'AI agents' do anything it seems like a struggle for even basic tasks. How on earth are people having it do anything successfully, let alone really complex tasks like loading and navigating a website to buy tickets?

This article just sounds like an Ad for Muse. It's painful reading and just sounds awful.

Probably, it's how bluetooth is used to track devices/people too.
Re:Show HN: Moadim.io – A scheduler for agents on Saturday September 05, 2026 @11:33AM (#49577527)
It's funny how this website style is the "AI style" now.

I find it kind of hard to follow/read whatever theme/style it is, something about the big blocks breaks up the flow of reading.

Same with Redlib for Reddit, it's just so much nicer to look at.

These are an ESP32-S3 so you can use standard tools instead of whatever their offering is. Like EEZ Studio for GUI creation on LVGL.

Most of their products are ESP32 based I think.

LibRedirect is useful for this (and other sites) too if you want it to apply over the whole browser.

Friends send me links to reddit and stuff so it's handy to have an automatic redirect.

What model do you normally run the subagent on? You mentioned flash as well for that, but I wonder if a more 'strict' model would do a better job at pushing the main back on track.
Whenever a new certificate is issued the bots seem to all monitor that and immediately start scanning the new domain.

Especially when Garmin and some other watches last a week or more.
Re:All memory manufactured in 2027 has been sold out on Saturday August 08, 2026 @10:35AM (#49222212)
I'd spend the $100 on a replacement motherboard if it was me, better than not being able to use the PC.

Could be less than $100 if buying used too maybe!

I believe their adblock is built in to the browser and not an extension, so it can be more effective than the limited extensions.

Brave has its own downsides too, but at least the browser seems pretty effective at blocking ads and tracking junk.

I don't this is doing a lot, it only has 18 domains listed and is missing all tracking domains from samsung, motorola, apple, android, etc..
Re:AI Is Getting Way Too Expensive on Friday July 31, 2026 @06:41PM (#49129367)
Meanwhile Deepseek V4 Flash seems to be pretty solid and is a fraction of the price of most other models.

I only have a couple of VPS plans with them, but my experience is good.
>If I accidentally set up a passkey on my phone (let’s say I use Safari one day instead of my go-to, Brave), can I still log in without that passkey on other devices?

Yes, but you can also add the passkey to your password manager so it's available on all your devices.

>Can I add another passkey on another device?

Yes.

>How many passkeys can I set up for a particular site/app?

I haven't really seen a specified limit on any sites, but also if you're using a password manager it's only 1 passkey for all your devices anyways.

> For now, I’m going to stick with LastPass and use Passwords; because no matter whether I lose my device or not or whether I’m on my own devices or not, I can be sure I’ll be able to get into a site/app.

Your passkeys would be in LastPass as well like your passwords, so arguably the same result regardless of which you use.

>Edit: One final consideration, my spouse and I share user/name passwords for some things (notably Pandora and our Amazon Prime account) since they don’t handle things like family logins well; how do both my wife and I use amazon or Pandora with passkeys? Do we each set up passkeys? How do I get her Pass if that’s not an option?

If it was me I'd add a second passkey to my password manager for your wife under a new entry, and share that entry to her lastpass account.

Or if she's not on lastpass, you could just copy the data from the passkey over to whatever she does use.

That part that frustrates me is this is just one example of spending for no reason, so how many others like it are also out there?
Re:HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router on Monday July 20, 2026 @09:21AM (#48978507)
One thing that frustrates me about MikroTik and OpenWRT too, is a lot of things require multiple steps to set up, like adding a port forward with hairpin isn't just one click, adding a VLAN requires adding stuff in like 5+ different places.

I really liked using Opnsense before I switched to Openwrt and I always want to go back, because it was just so much more streamlined and easy to configure from a 'geek but not a network engineer' perspective.

Re:Orion Browser by Kagi on Monday July 20, 2026 @09:13AM (#48978411)
It's a tough question, I would be fine with ads if they were relevant to the content I'm looking at, minimal (ie; no motion, popups, covering up content), actually checked for safety so all the scam and phishing ads went away, and checked for performance so they didn't slow down a website so it's barely usable.

Maybe if adblockers become more widespread that will start to happen, right now ad networks seem to just allow anything.

Like if I'm reading a cooking article and there's an add to the side for some cooking gadgets or something like that, sure why not!
