Re:Ask HN: How did you transition from Mac to Linux? on Tuesday June 05, 2018 @12:35PM (#17239365)
Really stinks when you're remote with limited connectivity though. If you're plugged in all day then it would work, yeah
Re:Ask HN: How did you transition from Mac to Linux? on Tuesday June 05, 2018 @12:32PM (#17239346)
FWIW I did the opposite. I had elementaryOS optimized for laptop use running on a thinkpad T430s. I was happy with it for a bit but ended up reverting to a MBP for the following reasons:

- As others have pointed out, the MPB gestures/touchpad are second to none. The size alone, let alone the responsive and consistent gestures are conducive to my productivity

- OSX posix support has never let me down. As of today, I have been able to develop anything on a Macbook that I would use linux for. This increases my productivity and battery life

- On some variations of linux, notably elementary (which I somewhat ironically chose in order to get as close to the OSX experience as possible), alt+tab goes to the next open window as opposed to the one you most recently used, as it does on OSX. This drove me crazy

- OSX has more support for more apps than linux does

- You can always run linux in a docker container or a VM if you absolutely need it

Just my two cents for someone who is weighing between Mac/Linux

CA scandal was the straw for me

Messenger is actually the worst variant from what I understand. Apparently this app's data collection practices are worse than simply using the browser or Facebook native app
Re:React v16.3.0: New lifecycles and context API on Thursday March 29, 2018 @05:33PM (#16711250)
Lot of niceties in this one. Painful to keep up at times but at least the React team makes it worthwhile for those who do so. Kudos.

I'm not so sure about that last part. We (Kinvey, www.kinvey.com) have been using it for customer-facing services in production for over a year. Results have exceeded our expectations.
Re:Facebook spamming users via their 2FA phone numbers on Wednesday February 14, 2018 @04:08PM (#16379376)
They definitely are. And for users like me they certainly aren't getting their money's worth... I use FB purity, ublock origin, and have spent the better part of the last year using the 'on this day' feature to scrub historical information from the platform.

As a tool Facebook still has valid use cases for me. The benefits of keeping it edge out any negatives. So for now I will stay. Unless any egregious election meddling information comes out, in which I'll seriously reevaluate that decision

Re:Facebook spamming users via their 2FA phone numbers on Wednesday February 14, 2018 @04:05PM (#16379354)
Yeah. It's no secret that they never fully let you disconnect. If you're serious about it, seems like you need to create a burner email account with an absurdly complex password, update FB to use this account, and you know the rest
Re:Facebook spamming users via their 2FA phone numbers on Wednesday February 14, 2018 @03:48PM (#16379226)
Finally, somewhere I can appropriately vent about this.

About TWO years ago I was constantly annoyed by the 'secure your account: add your phone number here' banner frequently displayed at the top of the page upon loading FB, so I input my number to make it disappear for good. (Also, they kept hiding the 'x' (close) icon in different spots, making the banner difficult to dismiss.)

A few days later I got a text message containing a Facebook notification. I was flabbergasted. What an EGREGIOUS misuse of personal information. Completely under the guise of account security... Facebook had in reality acquired another way to keep their brand under my nose.

Naturally I was livid so I spent the better portion of the day scrubbing whatever sensitive information I could. Sure enough, the banner came back a few days later. And here we are.

I realize that the proper solution is to terminate my account and never attempt to log back in.... but I've had my account since 2006 and despite the company's terrible practices, I'm really not interested in disconnecting for good at this time

Re:Uber rolls out in-app tipping on Tuesday June 20, 2017 @01:46PM (#14596766)
Why are people up in arms over this? Being able to tip on Lyft is one of my favorite parts and from what I've read and understood, it generally favors the drivers. You don't need to tip immediately, a nice little dialog pops up with pre-configured amounts, and you can go above and beyond if you had good service

Good to know. Am in the throes of choosing between both for a simple project
Re:ShadowBrokers: The NSA Compromised the SWIFT Network on Friday April 14, 2017 @11:35AM (#14115049)
Perhaps this is one of the reasons Americans don't want to be surveilled unconstitutionally by our own government!
How is that not relevant, though? Are you the comment police or something?
Add elementary OS to it and you're set :)
