Am I the only one who is concerned that Facebook is going to eventually turn into a passive surveillance system for the government? I don't think it would be too difficult for Facebook to silently alert authorities when particular matches occur.
I have to agree with this. Email is not a secure medium and this is just going to confuse people.

"It brings me no joy to observe this, but the future of mass market portable computing involves neither a mouse pointer nor an x86 processor."

Or freedom.

Re:Why the Web Won't Be Nirvana (1995) on Tuesday November 10, 2015 @05:15PM (#10542999)
My viewpoint is that things like Bitcoin are little more than cryptographically engineered Monopoly Money. That said, I do believe that eventually, paper money will go away (if for no other reason than to track every purpose for government surveillance).
I installed Chrome in ~/Applications and saw what you are talking about. I believe they are really just shortcuts for Chrome for various Google services. I deleted them and haven't seen them since.
Re:Writing the Prince symbol in Unicode (2013) on Sunday November 08, 2015 @08:12PM (#10530883)
Plus, Prince has resumed using his given name, so there is no need for the symbol or the who "artist formerly known as" thing.
Re:Linus Torvalds Talks Linux Security at LinuxCon on Friday November 06, 2015 @04:16PM (#10522089)
For the same reason you see X and Vim being referred to as Linux software.
Re:The IBM POWER8 Review: Challenging the Intel Xeon on Friday November 06, 2015 @11:44AM (#10520372)
POWER, OS/2, and The Thinkpad has convinced me that IBM just doesn't make the most of what they create.
Agreed. I can't think of the last time they were relevant.
Even a broken clock is correct twice a day.
Re:Firefox Now Offers a More Private Browsing Experience on Thursday November 05, 2015 @11:21AM (#10514169)
I haven't been thrilled with Mozilla's direction for a while now. Bloating Firefox by embedding Pocket and Hello into it, speeding up Firefox's release frequency just because Chrome does it that way, wasting resources on Firefox-OS, and firing an employee just for donating to a political cause.

If they are not careful, they are going to run Mozilla into the ground.

I have never heard of this company before. Thank you for the comment.
I know it started with 8 because my father, a computer novice, ended up with a Microsoft account because of how things were presented during setup.

If Win10 improved on this, that is good news.

This, combined with Microsoft trying to trick people into thinking they need a Microsoft account in order to create a user account, shows how far they have fallen.
Re:Neovim public release 0.1.0 on Sunday November 01, 2015 @07:27PM (#10489210)
"neovim now follows the XDG spec"

Speaking as someone who only runs straight window managers and Xterms, I hate that XDG bullshit.

Re:Amazon Payments plus VPN = account closed on Friday October 30, 2015 @04:35PM (#10480387)
This whole scenario, and the one Dan Grossman experienced, is just awful and customer unfriendly. I really hope someone from Amazon fixes this.
Re:ESPN suspends publication of Grantland on Friday October 30, 2015 @04:29PM (#10480352)
It's my understanding that Disney is reigning in ESPN's spending.
Re:OberonStation, an Oberon RISC workstation on Thursday October 29, 2015 @08:48PM (#10475518)
Despite booting and testing Oberon on more than one occasion, I have personally never found a use for it. That said, it makes me happy to see people tinkering and creating things like this.
It sounds like you are trying to make a point about something.
Re:Despite privacy concerns, CISA bill poised for passage on Monday October 26, 2015 @07:18PM (#10455177)
It will be pointless because it is going to happen.

Re:Are tarballs obsolete? on Monday October 26, 2015 @06:02AM (#10450384)
I like tarballs. Speaking as a non-programmer who compiles things like Vim and Scrypt, it is nice to be able to download a release without having to install a VCS first.
Re:OpenBSD developers: Landry Breuil on Saturday October 24, 2015 @09:21PM (#10445563)
You have a lot of gull saying what is important to 99% of users. And if battery life was the most important factor, people wouldn't use Linux either.
Re:Cmus – A Small Terminal Music Player on Thursday October 22, 2015 @06:08AM (#10431371)
No questions from me; just appreciation for the work you are doing. Thank you.

Re:Ask HN: Why is Mac OS X/iOS not called a flavor of Unix? on Monday October 19, 2015 @06:05AM (#10412005)
Thank you. I don't understand why this is even being debated.

Conformance statement for El Capitan: http://www.opengroup.org/csq/repository/RID=apple%25252FXY1%...

If you follow the link to the Kagins website, it says "Kevin Costner will narrate and produce the two-hour documentary for National Geographic Channel, covering Western Americana enthusiast Randy Guijarro’s odyssey to authenticate this unique photograph".

So details of the verification process are being withheld in order the make the documentary more appealing.
