Re:A fork of RuboCop without all of the 'cop' stuff on Friday June 12, 2020 @11:49PM (#23506599)
Many parts of Rubocop have creatively named robocop references and names. Robocop itself is satire. I think actual tools and software used by police departments should be causing more offense.
Re:Ancient crocodiles walked on two legs like dinosaurs on Friday June 12, 2020 @09:57AM (#23499271)
It's more interesting that they also walked on their heels like us which is apparently different from dinosaurs.
I thought blacklist was related to 'black out' meaning to censor something by blacking it out. I don't know, it's a cool word, words with colors in the names feel richer. Banlist/allowlist is simpler I guess, which is still nice.
Feels sluggish and scrolling is painful on my galaxy s6. It might be an old phone, but even so I can't recall any other websites being this slow.
Re:The Fastest Google Fonts on Friday May 29, 2020 @11:00AM (#23350700)
I try to block all the web fonts I encounter. A lot of UI symbols aren't rendered which amusingly sometimes results in overlapping text descriptions. I just can't stand looking at certain fonts or ligatures and refuse to let a website decide how it renders text.
Can the same be done for smells?
What kind of movement is it?

Calling it a web of filaments doesn't paint a clear picture as to the movement itself.

Assuming it's synchronized, I think of child objects moving in sync with some kind of parent structure. That sounds ridiculous though.

Waste of money and space.
How exactly is wastewater distributed throughout the 500 acres? Article says a system of pipes. Is it percolating throughout the entirety of the pipes or are there just a few endpoints with massive ponds? Really interesting read.
Re:Ask HN: How to make an extra $2000 monthly? on Friday January 10, 2020 @11:24PM (#22018117)
Yes, she sells via Etsy. I would link her store page for the curious, but sellers on Etsy are really homogenous and so you can glean the same info from any of them probably.
Re:Women now make up the majority of the U.S. labor force on Friday January 10, 2020 @01:47PM (#22013834)
Are farm workers excluded because it's easier? Wouldn't matter I suppose just curious.
Re:Can We Build a Sun Screen to Combat Global Climate Change? on Wednesday January 08, 2020 @10:17PM (#21998246)
Let's farm Azolla on a massive scale, trigger another Azolla event.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azolla_event

Also make it a law for buildings in urban environments to have white roofs. Heat islanding is a very real problem and just painting stuff white seems to help.

Re:Ask HN: How to make an extra $2000 monthly? on Tuesday January 07, 2020 @02:40PM (#21983865)
Not software related, but my sister makes and sells simple candlesticks online for that much each month.

I also resold earbuds/earplugs online for a years to get $1000-1500/mo. Seemed like a viable side project only taking up an hour or so every night to prepare packages, and then an extra 20 minutes to swing by the post office each morning.

Like others said, it's always a good idea to reduce your spending and try to save. You can even use that savings to occasionally fund projects without feeling too bad if something fails.

Would it be fair if they paid the difference in cost?
Re:Could this be the most realistic Synthetic voice? on Thursday January 02, 2020 @10:17PM (#21942787)
The pause between words still sounds artificial but the actual voice itself seems very friendly and natural.

I also almost wrote 'his voice...' when writing this comment. That's always a good sign for synthetic speech.

Re:Xinhua: China Plans to Re-Interpret Classic Religious Books on Thursday January 02, 2020 @06:09AM (#21934458)
>Wang asked the committee to look into organizing a major effort to perform a comprehensive review of all religious teaching books, including the Bible, the Quran and the Buddhist books. The committee should start modifications and even do full re-translations.

Should be entertaining comparing the versions before with those after.

>The bone turned out to be the very first Denisovan fossil ever found because the specimens found in the Denisova Cave in Siberia's Altai Mountains were unearthed 28 years after the monk's discovery. But researchers didn't know that at the time.

Interesting, so the Denisovans might have been called something else if they had only looked at this?

Re:Motorola flips for its futuristic foldable phone on Saturday December 28, 2019 @06:50PM (#21902702)
>The phone will launch in the U.S. in January starting at $1,500.

No one is going to buy that.

Re:Anti Homeless Spikes on Saturday December 28, 2019 @02:46PM (#21901230)
You don't care about the homeless. Just say that next time to save time.
>No wires are getting in the way at any time.

The battery lasts only 2 hours... and takes over 3 to charge? You are going to be permanently charging it, whether using it while charging or just setting it aside while it charges, you have wires getting in the way.

Re:Windows 95 UI Design on Thursday December 26, 2019 @09:22PM (#21888607)
>The ellipsis hints that this button opens a dialog, instead of immediately executing an action.

Can't believe I never noticed this.

It seems kind of disappointing to remove these additions. It's interesting by itself what all was added and thinking for what reason. At least the previous versions will always exist online for anyone curious, and it is neat to make comparisons before/after restoration.
Re:Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney changed video game industry on Wednesday December 25, 2019 @02:28AM (#21877407)
I think Second Life or VRChat seem to have more similarity with Ready Player One. Maybe not the scale and popularity but everything else.
That sounds smart. They use tons of water anyway in the desert to keep solar panels clean. I'm not sure if it's captured but using it for agriculture would be nice. Maybe the process of greening the environment could even reduce how much sand gets blown around, so even less water would be needed for cleaning.
Re:Creating Online Environments That Work Well for Older Users on Saturday December 21, 2019 @06:57PM (#21854105)
I usually hit the Reader View button within firefox if a page is unreadable. Returns a standard looking plain webpage, black text on white background at whatever font size I have it scaled up to.

Google's text-only cached results also help sometimes.

Re:Tattoo-induced skin burn during MR imaging (2000) on Saturday December 21, 2019 @06:43PM (#21854025)
>The two adjacent thunderbolt tattoos could have approximated an RF pick-up loop and therefore would have been more prone to preferentially absorb the RF energy.

Interesting

Re:Abe’s New Word Order on Wednesday December 18, 2019 @11:26PM (#21832000)
Reminds me of military uniforms displaying last names all caps.
I don't think they will touch handicapped toilets.

So of course everyone is going to form lines to use that toilet. Maybe they constantly prop the toilet seats back up to the correct angle until the seats break.

This reminds me of the hostile designed public benches and seating to prevent people sleeping on it. It just ends up making everyone hate it.

Re:Unity vs. Unreal Engine: Which Is Better for XR Development on Tuesday December 17, 2019 @09:48PM (#21821312)
Seemed like there was more resources and info for Unity a few years ago. This was an interesting update about Unreal Engine.
I'm not sure. Calling it just 'reuploading' is also kind of insulting because it seems a lot of these people spend serious time editing together clips and highlights to create something fresh from what could have originally been an 8 hour long stream.

People do this for movies, tv episodes, news drama, creating interesting clips without much issue and I don't see a big difference.
