Perhaps in the future a group of people will have the job of moving cars that have gone into failsafe mode, and no one else will have to drive.
Take the case of elevators, originally they had manual operators who needed to make sure that they leveled out on a given floor so people could safely get on and off. Today elevators function on their own with users simply requesting their desired location. Every now and then they do get stuck, which requires calling in a certified technician to move the elevator, help trapped passengers, diagnose and repair problems before returning the elevator to service.
A well designed control system will have a good fail safe, but having to wait two hours for the closest technician to arrive because a branch has fallen accross the road would be annoying.
Sadly large companies can afford to drive smaller companies out of business suspect means and then fight charges in court. The court system moves slowly and is prohibitively expensive for small companies, so the small company is likely to run out of money long before they are able to force the hand of a larger company.
There are many lawyers that have their hourly billing rate set at $1000/Hr.
Hurricane, or perhaps Tulane is a party school.
Thank You to who ever posted this article. It points out how stupid college/car/etc... rankings are. I think people have a natural tendency to want to rank things, in the end it just makes us unhappy.
Who would read a blog with a title like, "HBO please let me watch Game of thrones without paying $130 a month". That would sound like whining.
Now your bill will add another mystery fee.
Sounds more Canadian to me

That was a really interesting analysis. A malware scam with a global reach. A phone designed in California, malware written in Russia or former soviet Republic, and Banking routed through Singapore. I gained a wealth of knowledge.
The last patent reform bill really did nothing. Why can't congress pass useful bills.
Nooh, now only big weather will tell us our meteorological future. First ObamaCare and now this. This country has lost its way.
malware is a numbers game. All you need is a few thousand older people that don't know any better and you can have your password sniffer / bot net , up and running in no time.
While poorly written english is a red flag to some of us. Not all computer users are native speakers of english even in english speaking countries. They are much less likely to notice usage and spelling errors.
Products get cheaper due to automation, so people buy more stuff. Laid off workers eventually become robot technicians or designers. Some may never adapt but the same be said for any western country that has lost factories to the east.
If $153 billion was invested and some $3 billion in investments will never be recaptured, as the figures suggest, that there is roughly a 2% chance that the money will be lost.
It is still good to be a VC.
It just takes one or two people to take the idea of physical punishment too far before people start calling for change. In the 1970's in the USA teachers were allowed to hit students. I would like to see a teacher try that now.
Tell kids to play with some paper dolls and see how long before they complain about being bored.
Glad to see that european airport secuirty is just as incompetent as american TSA officers.
In the future have your robots sent by post in advance of your arrival and terrorism officials will be none the wiser.
I guess now I know where comcast has been spending my subscription fees. Apparently on very expensive lawyers. Now if comcast would only upgrade there service so American broadband would be more comparable to Sweden or Japan.
I look forward to the extra second of sleep.
For years intel claimed that developers would never port their code from x86 to a different archiecture. The recent wave of mobile devices for iOS and Android has shown this to be completely wrong.
In the future DBA's that only know how to use a relational database will be obsolete, because younger developers that know how to use mysql and various nosql solutions will take their jobs.
Frequently a market can support multiple versions of a product and the presence of multiple versions of the product create the potential to increase the overall market. If there was only one flavor of linux today a lot fewer people would be using linux
The last commercial Fab in the valley closed some five years ago. Many of the companies that were essential still have their HQ in the valley, but are transferring more of their operations over seas, Applied Materials for one.
The valley has evolved over time too, and in order to be an interesting place it must continue to evolve. I have yet to see an end to interesting conversations, ideas, and things coming out of here.
That is why I only read The Onion.
The title was simply meant to get your attention. If you read the whole article the advice given could be applied to anyone working at or running a tech company who is frustrated with their life.
You might be surprised to know that many people in third world countries are frustrated with their lives too. For example there are multiple Asian countries with higher suicide rates than the US and Canada.

If anything this kind of venting and sharing is a healthy coping mechanism.
With the American justice system it would have been cheaper to keep him in prison for life than to execute him for murder, due to the number of appeals allowed.
Would you rather have him claim to die as a marytr and have his friends and family claim he is in heaven with his 70 virgins. His rotting in prison sends a stronger symbol that the state can keep a man down. At least in prison he can be humaliated rather than elevated to the level of a hero.
Its one thing to die a hero another to sit in a cell for forty years in your own filth.
Everyone forms groups with shared behaviors and values whether they realize it or not. This is neither good or bad, but it does serve to define each and everyone of us whether we accept it or not.
Most animals are driven by a desire to eat, sleep and reproduce including humans. There are exceptions like worker bees and ants that can't reproduce, there is no analog in humans.
If your lawyer misses something that does material affect you it is considered legal malpractice. Lawyers can and have been sued over this.
You took a class called "Design and Analysis of Algorithms I" and complained that the problem sets were too easy. What were you expecting?
