Re:To my daughter's high school programming teacher
on Tuesday September 10, 2013 @02:28AM (#6358505)
I see a lot of posts here simply making excuses for the teacher, proclaiming why it wasn't really his fault or responsibility. So what? The situation presented is unacceptable, and we're kidding ourselves if we think that whether the details of this particular instance are sufficiently condemning or not makes a difference as to the fact this this kind of thing goes on all the time in our high schools. It's not okay. This woman at least made an effort to do something about it.

The whole reason we even know about all this is because someone did have that courage.

I've become rabidly anti-Java. My friend installed Java on my computer as part of the process of rooting my HP touchpad to install android, and within days my antivirus had detected multiple java-based attacks on my system. These were literally the first attacks since I'd wiped my HD after a previous Java related attack. I uninstalled Java immediately, and hope that I never have to install it again.

You can get really cheap refill cartridges on Amazon. I paid maybe 8 bucks for C Y M and x3 B. They're not 'official' but they work just fine, in my case better even than the normal ones.

The better solution is to use an open door design (often found in airports) and have hand dryers rather than paper towels. Less waste and associated mess, no garbage to change, no doorknobs to not touch.

That line is in response to the question, 'Is Pinterest fundamentally feminine in some way?' The answer of no in that context is that Pinterest is a derivative behavior associated with 'women's magazines' which is also not fundamentally feminine.

The full voiceover (including player lines) was one of the big things that really sold it for me -- it's really hard to go back to other RPGs and play a silent nobody after playing mass effect (which was one of the reasons I never go into Dragon Age (aside from it being bad)).

I went to check the #discover tab on a lark. Absolutely nothing interested me. I have 4700+ tweets to my username, you'd think that would be enough info to show me one story about gaming perhaps (considering 99% of my tweets are about gaming).

Re:Why there are no children and we should think less
on Sunday January 01, 2012 @07:17PM (#3414265)
I'm not really a fan of the whole 'no children' idea, but the point about thinking less is absolutely true. When it comes to coding there is a bit of a distinction that is easy to trip over: the difference between thinking and processing. If you've watched Notch code you can probably see this at work - people often remark about how he's continuously writing code rather than sitting there thinking. But it's also obvious that he's not just blindly typing code -- he's processing the code while he's typing.
But for life in general, thinking is a trap. Your brain has already done all the important processing for you, because that's what it does. Do what your gut tells you, but pay attention to what happens because that's the only way your brain can improve it's process.
