I deleted my original comment and the response to your reply; upon review I found them not to lend anything helpful to the conversation but rather to promote argumentative behavior.
Re:Building Windows 8 on Monday August 15, 2011 @04:50PM (#2888639)
I believe this to be a misunderstanding of the press out for W8. They are simply promoting the fact that you can now have HTML+JS+CSS as first-class apps. They don't seem to be deprecating support for native or .NET based development.
Re:Windows Laptop Makers Can’t Catch Up to the MacBook Air on Saturday August 13, 2011 @01:25PM (#2881436)
Yes, although it isn't the fastest possible. I don't notice a huge difference between the SSD in the primary PC and my 10k RPM Raptor I used to have as the OS disk.

I am not aware of the specs of the SSD in the Macbook.

This is exactly what I suspected was causing the perceived boost though.

Re:Windows Laptop Makers Can’t Catch Up to the MacBook Air on Saturday August 13, 2011 @01:58AM (#2880419)
I have had my new Macbook Air for about 3 weeks now, I am primarily a Windows developer. Let me tell you something, after 3 weeks with Lion (with VMWare Fusion for Visual Studio) I am fairly positive I will never buy or make a PC again.

I cannot explain this, these are things I never thought I would even think let alone say. The laptop boots the Android emulator and runs eclipse much faster than my primary pc which is a i7 tri-channel w/24gb ram.

The gestures and infinite desktops on Lion make it so much more usable than a default Windows machine or any other Linux variant I use.

I just wanted to chime in since you said >decide I didn't like it or Mac

Which, trust me, if you care about productivity or are amazed by superior resource management, not liking it would simply be an unjust bias coming to fruition.

Interesting header, but why would anyone want to cause someone else so much trouble trying to release a product?
I sincerely did not know about the tree-style tabbed browsing feature. I attribute this to my initial apprehension in adopting tabbed browsing to begin with, thanks for the info!

I also think this has a lot to do with browsing style as well. For purposes like my own I rarely need to have more than 5-10 pages actively open. I make extensive use of bookmarks and generally group my tabs in separate windows for organization purposes.

I could understand a tree-style view to help categorize, I will have to check that out as it sounds very nice.

I was asking from a perspective of standard tabbed browsing that doesn't have a form of organization like this; IMHO under such circumstance so many tabs would be unmanageable or confusing at very best.

Do you find it a normal use-case to have 40+ tabs open in a single browser window?

I only ask because that seems like it becomes unusable ~20 tabs, maybe this is heavily subjective but I cannot maintain anywhere near that number of tabs in a single browser window.

Wow, I've seen some sensationalistic articles before but this one is pretty sweet.

Let me see if I can recap on the main points.

1) There supposedly is software that doesn't appear to exist anywhere outside of a research lab.

2) This software as written doesn't actually do what it is reported nefariously to do because it is bugged.

3) It clearly declares the capabilities it intends to use to the user via a standard install screen which can be declined.

In summation, there may or may not be a program somewhere that isn't currently functional and of which the true intent is unknown.

If the above is accurate then I might have reports of thousands of trojans across various operating systems, or maybe I don't, who knows!

We are a republic, not a democracy.

Edit: I don't know why the down votes, this is a fact, not an opinion.

Re:PHP to deprecate MySQL extension on Friday July 15, 2011 @05:20PM (#2769159)
Only 5 different ways to do this?... that sounds like the most concise thing in ALL of PHP.
I have never once gotten the browser version to work on my Chromebook.
Re:Android takes huge lead in US Smartphone market on Wednesday July 06, 2011 @05:47PM (#2736053)
This is just a side note, but how many non-tablet devices do you see sporting Android or BlackBerry OS?

Just saying in this case comparing only within the confines of the phone market share makes perfect sense.

I didn't downvote, but I would like to know the difference between an "Average User" and a "Somewhat Technical User" in the context of the StackOverflow community?

He said he's been using Visual Studio for 5+ years, not Windows 7.
You are correct, it is different.

IP Geo-Location is a hack for when GPS Location and uniqueID aren't available, so the prudent choice to gain accurate analytic info would be to use the most accurate. Especially if you are a developer / publisher trying to tailor your functionality to your particular audience.

Android does inform you, in advance of installation of exactly what information the application would like access to so you can be absolutely aware of what information you are freely giving up when installing an application. Your only means to block access however after installation is if you have root access and modify host entries.

No, no it isn't.
Re:Switching to Android on Monday July 12, 2010 @11:19AM (#1508132)
Well it's similar in the fact that they both search data on the device.. But gestures is an application to access the index using quick, simple gestures instead of typing. If you want to search using a keyboard (the default method) then you wouldn't start the gesture application.
Re:Am I the Only One Who Uses a Text Editor to Edit Files? on Thursday March 25, 2010 @06:36PM (#1219732)
I doubleclick text and blank areas constantly I realize this probably drives people insane, but while I'm reading a paragraph I will keep doubleclicking to select and deselect the text over and over. Somehow it helps my concentration.. I do this with code as well.

That's why I have bookmarklets to disable the dictionary lookups and other what I consider annoyances on sites that implement those features on doubleclick and yes I've been told that I'm crazy on many occasions.

Re:Am I the Only One Who Uses a Text Editor to Edit Files? on Thursday March 25, 2010 @06:07PM (#1219654)
The site and the god awful grid background image (appears on doubleclick) was enough to inspire me to make a new bookmarklet.

My first impression, article aside, was that the site made baby Jesus cry.

Edit: In retrospect I think it was the combination of the orange and the grid background (I have a tendency to doubleclick on everything) that really put it over the edge for me, the main design isn't terrible.

Re:HTC Android Phones Found with Malware Pre-Installed on Tuesday March 09, 2010 @02:28PM (#1179157)
It sounds like they are taking the case from single phone and trying to create a pandemic.. I didn't notice anywhere in the article where they cared to test more than one phone or do any random sampling. Way to blow things out of proportion.
Re:An Adobe Flash developer on why the iPad can’t use Flash on Sunday February 21, 2010 @12:44AM (#1140198)
This seems ridiculous to me, it's almost as if the thought of using say... some sort of User-Agent to identify and differentiate the experience of the software is just well too simple to consider?
Such constant extreme unfounded evangelism for Apple is making it very difficult to extract any true insight from John Gruber's "articles".
Re:Video: Notion Ink Adam, iPad alternative on Sunday February 14, 2010 @02:55AM (#1124299)
> Also this tablet might also run Ubuntu or ChromeOS. Which means that the OS won't be nearly as integrated with the hardware as it is on the iPad. Or that the tablet's UI won't be designed specifically for the device it is on. Or apps that it will run won't be designed specifically for the device and instead will be generic, to the lowest common denominator (which, most of the time, will be a phone, not a tablet).

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, but it seems this means you would prefer a device that didn't have any advanced capabilities so that way all applications won't attempt to use any? Making the iPad without any extensibility was a design choice because it would be easier to make applications uniform? You would prefer to use a hindered device by design rather then software that selects its functionality based on available hardware? By contrast a gigantic portion of applications for the iPad will be designed to be run on a phone... the iPhone. I think you underestimate or don't fully understand Android.

I don't intend to sound condescending here, I am truly curious.

Re:Apple Bans the Word 'Android' From App Store on Friday February 05, 2010 @11:27PM (#1105750)
Well can you blame Apple?.. they didn't want to have their infallible image tarnished by having an top ADC app advertising that it was designed for a competing platform. [/sarcasm]

Boo

I'm glad someone else shared my opinion, I found "Apple quickly realized that apps would one day overtake .coms." to be a particularly absurd thing to say. When placed in context of the entire article it made more sense seeming as though the piece was on a whim (or possibly a dream/fantasy) rather then hard evidence or a deep understanding of our industry and culture.
Re:HTC Hero Kernel Source Code Released on Thursday October 22, 2009 @03:56PM (#897519)
I would tend to agree, but it might be unfair, I have a bias towards HTC because of their overall high level of quality.

Bias aside, they seem to be very committed to the nature of AOSP and they also seem motivated to help it grow.
