Re:Ask HN: Any APIs for domain name booking? on Tuesday June 19, 2012 @05:45AM (#4130966)
Name.com has a robust API. Godaddy has one through WildWestDomains.com, but Name.com is a better business partner.
Genius idea. Pure genius. Kickstarter has shown that they are less about ingenuity and more about public opinion. I hope your project gets funded 10x.

Well said.
Re:Heroku and AWS users... You don't have a business. on Friday June 15, 2012 @03:21AM (#4115449)
Some good points, not all correct.. but we're seeing some major sites out right now that, if I were invested in them at the VC level, I'd be looking at the CTO to justify their decisions for using Heroku/AWS without at least a non-cloud backup. I may even be looking to fire someone.

>> Kudos, you also worry about hardware all of the time

Patently untrue.

I haven't thought about hardware once in three years because I have an admin whom I've personally trained that worries for me. He knows how to scale hardware and software because I've showed him how to do it properly, and he has earned my trust.

I get to spend every minute of every work hour coding solutions. If you're a business owner and YOU still worry about hardware, then you need to fire your admins and hire rockstar-level admins. My admin spends no more than 2 hours a day on colo management because he does it the right way.

>> Congrats. Inevitably, a UPS will overload, a switch will die & you'll eat some downtime too. It happens -- build redundancy into your application / service to ensure that thy facility is irrelevant when the time comes.

I use external DNS to handle dynamic re-routing to an alternate colo should connectivity or power to this one fail. Even with this setup, it would cost more than 2 times as much to do what I do on the cloud, even if I used EC2 committed instances.

What's important is NOT to have NO downtime. What's important is to be PERCEIVED to have no downtime.

Customers should never see downtime from you. It should be transparent to them, giving you a 100% uptime public personna.

Re:Ask HN: What timezone should I use? on Friday June 15, 2012 @02:27AM (#4115315)
You want to use UTC and convert it to your local timezone using functionality provided in most of todays languages.

For example, in PHP, you could use gmdate('Y-m-d H:i:s') to get the current time/date in UTC.

In Python, you could use datetime.datetime.utcnow().

Heroku and AWS users... You don't have a business.

In fact, Heroku and AWS have a boatload of micro-businesses, one of which you run.If you're serious about your business, you'll host your own servers at a colo (TWO colos if you're really serious) on different network segments/providers, and use Heroku/AWS as a scaling mechanism and NOT a primary computing platform. They don't care if you lose customers, as long as you don't cancel YOUR account....

Re:Ask HN: Quadrotor-based sky advertisements on Wednesday June 13, 2012 @08:18PM (#4109180)
You'd want to run this operation from the rooftop of a building, not the ground.

You'd also want to augment the quads so that when they reach a low battery threshold, they return to the rooftop automatically for new batteries or a new ad.

To ensure they don't collide, you could use simple IR transceivers on the sides of the quads to allow them to maintain optimal distance at all times.

Finally, if you want to get REALLY creative, you could adapt gyros to the quads to allow them to stay perfectly still, even in high winds.

Rain would now be your biggest foe.

Re:Ask HN: Quadrotor-based sky advertisements on Wednesday June 13, 2012 @02:19PM (#4107505)
Sure it will work, for a few weeks.

Make sure you print on BOTH sides of the ad so the people in the buildings above can see it too.

They're still accepting accounts... Very odd. Stripe is a lot easier to use, IMHO.
While he's not entirely incorrect as entrepreneurs do need to be somewhat irrational to carry their beliefs to fruition when nobody else sees what they do, why would you expect someone who has probably never worked outside the education system, and if tenured can't be fired for outright lying to students, to have a unbiased or rational opinion about something they know nothing about?

My recommendation is (a) CLEP out of the course if it's required, or (b) ignore the unsubstantiated bias (that's found in many schools these days) and try to find some nugget of truth in the drivel he's shovelling.

When you find a professor who has experience in their field, is open minded, and actually keeps up with the current thinking on their subject matter, it's a "fantasticalicious" experience to learn from them. Sadly, they are few and very far between.

If you're going to school to become an entrepreneur, I can say with substantial experience that you are wasting your time and money.

Entrepreneurialism is NOT something that can be learned in school. It must be learned in the trenches. In fact, I believe that post-secondary education is the antithesis of entrepreneurialism.

If you're going to school to learn Business Admin, goodonya. Stay on task.

Re: Java Vs. Python. Which is better for a Start-Up? on Saturday June 09, 2012 @03:37PM (#4089059)
The chart you show is inaccurate. It's using Hotspot server for Java, but interpreted Python. For a fair comparison, you should use Psyco or PyPy for the tests. I suspect you'll find it right in line with Hotspot under Java.

Re:Ruby is faster than Python, PHP, and Perl on Wednesday June 06, 2012 @12:27PM (#4074690)
Does this really matter?

I mean, seriously, if speed is what you want, you'd write it in C. These days, with virtually unlimited CPU, we choose our languages based on suitability for the task, readability and community support (at least I do).

Other than assembler for games, I have never chosen a language based on speed of execution. Anyone else?

Can't we also just compile Ruby (or PHP or Python) to C and then let the C compiler optimize it these days? I think we can.

Additionally, the fact that Javascript kicks the crap out of the vast majority of languages is surprising to me.

Re:Can We Pronounce "The Cloud" Hype Over Yet? on Sunday June 03, 2012 @11:50AM (#4061051)
Well, I've been through this twice now, and I can tell you that when your cloud provider goes down, as EC2 does all the time, and you find out that your backup cloud provider is actually using EC2 but didn't tell you, you'll look differently at hosting your own "private cloud" (what we used to call a "Colo") to ensure that you have control over your own destiny.
Oh. My. God. I have one of these working for me, remotely.

Have you tried monodevelop? Mono is a free open source version of c# and it works very well on windows, mac, and linux.
Please.. help me agree with you by naming one game that was on XBOX for YEARS, which was subsequently removed from XBOX because it was too similar to an upcoming, unreleased feature?
This is exactly what I've been talking about wrt App development on Apple. If Apple likes your product, and they steal your features for their OS or apps, they kick you out so they don't have any competition.

IMHO, it's a real douchebag business decision, and anyone with a popular unique app should always expect Apple to screw you over with no notice and have a contingency plan in the works.
