NPSI romps were pretty fun. Been a few years since I've fired it up.

NPSI = Not Purple, Shoot It!

Squad up and then move to some objective location and raise hell shooting anything (w/ coordination from squad leader since the idea is to usually pool DPSl) not in the squad.

For dead drops, beyond worry about viruses there is also the concern about physical security so you don't fry your device/port. Randomly plugging in unknown USB devices just has way too many downsides.

USBkill, etc.

> The Photo page gives you everything you need to manage your entire image library from import to completion. You can import photos directly, from your Apple Photos library or Lightroom, and organize them with tags, ratings, favorites and keywords for fast, flexible management of even the largest libraries.

This is how they're going to win over LR users. It always comes back to it not just being a decent photo editor, it's also a library management tool. Beyond good organization, If you're non-destructively editing photos and not wanting to render out every single artifact, then you need a tool that can you show the library and dynamically render the edits.

It's nice experimenting with different editors, but having library management is turning into more of what keeps me shelling out. I'll have to check this out more.

Re:Pike: To Exit or Not to Exit on Wednesday March 11, 2026 @08:21AM (#47334652)
If unspecified, 'exit' would mean 'exit right' to the right side of the traffic flow. In dense urban areas it might make sense for geography or cost reasons to put it on the left in which case youll see "Exit Left" to make sure people know to be in the 'fast lane' in preparation to leave the highway since it departs the highway exceptionally on the left

I-94 and I-35E in St. Paul, Minnesota comes to mind. You just merge left onto the other highway if you need to change.

Even with Flux, setting the profile automatically breaks down at high latitudes. If you're far enough from the equator, the sun can sod off most of the year as for how it relates to human biorythms.

I'm 60°N, as with my alarm clock, I've set a static profile to follow 365 days a year since the sun is unreliable.

Wind driven snow and drifting will continue to bury things. Check out the South Pole Topography post (and the rest of the blog) https://brr.fyi/posts/south-pole-topography
A few months ago Adobe finally updated Lightroom Classic to require these processor extensions. To squeeze all of the matrix mults it can for AI features also in CPU mode.

It's amazing how long of a run top end hardware from ~2011 has had (just missed the cutoff by a few months). It's taken this long for stuff to really require these features.

I'm so used to getting 451's that the example flew right over my head. First reaction was, "ugh this again [reaches for vpn]".
I have a working(!) motherboard that survived an international flight in checked luggage, wrapped in nothing more than cotton t-shirts.

I don't advise it, but tech can take quite some abuse.

He recently did one of those "this video will delete in X hours" bits where he asked people to email him different places, people, things to check out.

He very, very clearly has no interest in returning to weekly videos on-location; more deeper dives or just something different.

"Scheduling" can become a four-letter word when it comes to adults organizing for game nights. In many groups game night rarely seems to rise to the formality of scheduling sports with organized practice/play sessions.

It's nice to hear that this group found a way to maintain the spontaneity.

At least apps have to ask permissions for notifications now, and you can deny it outright from the start. In years prior I remember trying to hack things with Tasker and extensions, but it's just not needed to nearly the same degree now.

And if the app is good, it will categorize it's notification types in a user-centric way and allow you to enable only specific categories.

Add a timestamp for when it resets. Don't just say it's every 24 hours. Make it clear to users, don't reset underneath them. It's a globe and one person's cenvenient reset time might be another person's lunch break.

Especially if you're hiking alone, in unfamiliar territory, be aware of the weather, terrain, and potential hazards.

A compass, clear sightlines to points of reference, and a paper map can work wonders for orientation.

It's quite possible his things are where they were left and they were missed behind an unrecognized rock in a boulder field. People rarely stop and really look deeply at the path they've taken. The return trip can look quite different (time of day, personal exhaustion, etc.). If you can keep necessary gear on you, it's best. But if you really need to leave something make it dead obvious to find and then a few steps simpler yet. Necessary gear in the context of potential wind and freezing rain includes a decent jacket.

If everyone had prepared for a group trip (a couple hours hiking in the mountains) don't be the one to take off on your own, and try to caution anyone who wants to.

I think trying to reach his hiking party is entirely reasonable. They know best the planned route for the day and where the hiker should be. "can you see/hear (peak/river/waterfall)?" "if your looking at the peak is the sun in front/behind/left/right" of you?" could help reorient someone or make it obvious they went down a wrong side. but there is a tremendous amount of personal responsibility you're taking going off alone in the wilderness.

My Dad got a family plan of cell phones for my two brothers and I in ~2003-04 from a fairly small midwestern town.

I have no idea if he was given an option but our numbers were sequential. X, X+1, and X+2.

I loved those kits as a kid too.

I'm currently waiting for one of my brothers kids to actually tear into this to try and figure it out. It's more about boolean logic and I think there won't be too much illuminating if they try and open it but it's a good signal to provide more.

Part 2

UNSW Talk - Part 2 - Job Tip, What I hated about university EE, Contracting + more https://youtu.be/mW-1FMGpsFg?si=oSg989BXVX0YTDdq

I had one a while ago and notifications, specifically google calendar notications were terrible. While they would appear on the watch they were completely absent from my phone.

So if I didn't specifically look at and flip through the watch, and instead looked at my phone there would be zero indication I had a appointment coming up.

I'm happy with my Withings Scan watch now. I'm largely passed active-smart watch territory and only passively check the stats on it.

"same day 100% done" is just not possible unless things like mail-in deadlines are shifted to be "received by" instead of "post marked by" the election day.

If people want same day results, it's a heavier process change than "count faster".

With the current rules trying to cut it off in mere hours is disenfranchising valid voters.

Re:Re: Do people IRL know you have a blog? on Tuesday July 23, 2024 @03:27AM (#41043523)
I had personal site on shared hosting with blog, microblog, "lifestream", photo gallery in the late 00s. It's been a 'placeholder' status for redevelopment since I think about 2011-12.

I got a job and started (over)working. Bugs/exploits in the PHP framework I was using took the site down a few times. Maintenance lagged, and I eventually zipped everything and shut it down.

I've found a better work life balance over the years, but just haven't connected the dots to ever doing something new with it. I think the last attempt foundered on picking a static site generator.

Most of my IRL friends and family barely use Facebook so I'm pretty sure few were ever very aware of what was on there.

Re:Airline keeps mistaking 101-year-old woman for baby on Sunday April 28, 2024 @09:04AM (#40188301)
It's an interesting "time is a circle" problem given that a century only has 100 years and then we loop around again. 2-digit years is convenient for people in many situations but they are very lossy, and horrible for machines.

It reminds me of this breaking change to .Net from last year.[1][2] Maybe AA just needs to update .Net which would pad them out until the 2050's when someone born in the 1950s would be having...exactly the same problem in the article. (It is configurable now so you could just keep pushing it each decade, until it wraps again).

Or they could use 4-digit years.

Re:Ask HN: What happened to video progress bars? on Wednesday November 01, 2023 @01:48AM (#38095003)
I consider the lack of ability to scrub through video to be an accessibility problem.

Controlling speed helps but as you say, sometimes you just need to "repeat that bit" and not wait for a whole minute to roll around where you might forget to catch what you're looking for. Or God forbid you do something like open comments and the video restarts.

I haven't pursued downloads yet but started looking for plugins, haven't tried any yet though. Installing plugins in a frustrated mindset didn't seem ideal.
