I'd take a cube farm over an open office plan every day of the week.

I don't understand it from an American perspective. Is this a standard practice in large companies?

I had the same thing happen to me with a company issued HP laptop years ago. There were like a dozen of us in a meeting at the time and it blew our minds lol It was basically this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Goz0PnhEg8.

This is giving me real Severance Perpetuity Wing vibes.
Just slap an American flag on it and call it "Patriot Solar."
So if I go to Google Street View for New Woodstock I won't see a single car? I'll only see a single bus servicing the whole community? Or is this just a fantasy you're describing?

Some kids in my area have bus rides of over an hour each way. There are dozens of school buses for the school. It's a huge tax cost.

You are out of your mind if you think this would be acceptable or even feasible for the average person, let alone the disabled or elderly.

Other than trains and bicycles, what were the main transportation options before cars other than horses?
> Did you know that humans existed before cars? Or am I really dumb and short-sighted for believing that could have ever happened?

Yeah, I'm not going back to horse and buggy.

Of course I would take transit for daily tasks, if it were available, but that just isn't possible everywhere.

I live on a road that started as a literal horse path by the original settlers. I am surrounded by 750k acres of National Forest. I live here to not be close to town. There is no situation in which public transit could reasonably service my area, which is fine! Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Are you taking the train to the grocery store?

My area still has functioning train station and it ain't getting me anywhere but to another train station.

Like what, a bus? I don't think my town of 800 could support one.

I don't think Europeans really understand how rural most of America is compared to Europe.

> (You don't, by the way. No, cars are not essential even where you, the reader, live).

I live a half an hour drive from the closest grocery store. That's a long bike ride, bud.

You build muscle in the gym and lose weight in the kitchen. It really is that simple.
If we're talking roadside boulders, chicken farmer is worth a mention. [0]

If you're ever in the area of Madison, NH and have absolutely nothing else to do, the Madison Boulder is kinda neat. [0] It's a little bigger at about 5k tons.

I'll give you a another: diaphanous.
At what, Applebees?
I live in the boonies and dinner + tip (and drinks) for two can easily be $200. Parking is free here because, ya know, boonies and whatnot.

That's so good! Thank you for sharing it.

I really need to deep dive Simon & Garfunkel.

Not totally related but The Tuft of Flowers by Robert Frost always reminds me Donne's poem.

  The Tuft of Flowers

  I went to turn the grass once after one
  Who mowed it in the dew before the sun.

  The dew was gone that made his blade so keen
  Before I came to view the levelled scene.

  I looked for him behind an isle of trees;
  I listened for his whetstone on the breeze.

  But he had gone his way, the grass all mown,
  And I must be, as he had been,—alone,

  ‘As all must be,’ I said within my heart,
  ‘Whether they work together or apart.’

  But as I said it, swift there passed me by
  On noiseless wing a ‘wildered butterfly,

  Seeking with memories grown dim o’er night
  Some resting flower of yesterday’s delight.

  And once I marked his flight go round and round,
  As where some flower lay withering on the ground.

  And then he flew as far as eye could see,
  And then on tremulous wing came back to me.

  I thought of questions that have no reply,
  And would have turned to toss the grass to dry;

  But he turned first, and led my eye to look
  At a tall tuft of flowers beside a brook,

  A leaping tongue of bloom the scythe had spared
  Beside a reedy brook the scythe had bared.

  I left my place to know them by their name,
  Finding them butterfly weed when I came.

  The mower in the dew had loved them thus,
  By leaving them to flourish, not for us,

  Nor yet to draw one thought of ours to him.
  But from sheer morning gladness at the brim.

  The butterfly and I had lit upon,
  Nevertheless, a message from the dawn,

  That made me hear the wakening birds around,
  And hear his long scythe whispering to the ground,

  And feel a spirit kindred to my own;
  So that henceforth I worked no more alone;

  But glad with him, I worked as with his aid,
  And weary, sought at noon with him the shade;

  And dreaming, as it were, held brotherly speech
  With one whose thought I had not hoped to reach.

  ‘Men work together,’ I told him from the heart,
  ‘Whether they work together or apart.’

I live in a touristy town that does this with J1 workers. I'll tell you why: The jobs pay $7.25/hour.

The J1s are then packed like sardines into houses where they pay rent by the week. Why by the week? To remind them they're expendable and can be deported at a moment's notice by the restaurant/hotel/amusement park/etc. they work at. The worst I've heard is 16 people living in a 3-bedroom, 1 bathroom house.

The J1s themselves are typically great people. A lot of them do everything they can to stay in the area via Green Cards or whatever. Business that treat their J1s like shit are usually blacklisted by locals, too. We'll actively tell tourists not to give those businesses any business and why.

I couldn't remember which Shakespeare plays I had or hadn't read, so I've spent the summer going through them alphabetically. It's been a blast!

I knew many everyday expressions and phrases come from his work but I had no idea it was so many.

I'm currently about halfway through at 3.2k pages.

I'm guessing you don't know many roofers. I've watched roofers crush tall boys at 6AM more times than I can count.
