While I have your attention, can you constrast this human comment with your [presumably] human-derived username?

>can't set up port forwarding

After October 2026, nobody should be port-forwarding IMHO.

I am next to learn about the "tailscale options" of this new world.

Wish us all luck.

Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:50PM (#50341657)
Thank you for this human recommendation.

I am definitely still learning.

Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:49PM (#50341645)
seriously: I am a bluecollar electrician that has absolutely no clue what I am doing. I have several machines because I constantly >BRICK< OSes...

As I only really learn visually (i.e. I love GUI environments), LLMs have enabled me to (quite dangerously, I might re-enforce) finally explore Linux (from MacOS for ~40 years).

I have tried for a long time (to adopt any Linux) – the fact that an LLM also won't be a sassyb when asking simple questions... is one reason I am so comfortable with my/our future(s).

Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:44PM (#50341550)
Honestly didn't even know if it was something [genericized, or specific?] like "fedora" or "ZFS" (where there are multiple wrappers of it) so thanks for all the help from everyone.

Now I have learnt something.

Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:43PM (#50341528)
I just wanted a human recommendation; don't trust the LLMs at all.

Thanks for the link (above).

Not "any," some. But in general, I agree with His endorsement as kiss of death.

For us slow kids in the back, can you link to a .ISO-file of your favorite Debian?

Ubuntu found me (finally, with the tutorialhelp of a localLLM) in 2026, and I don't trust most of the opt-outs.

On the current timeline, this is a user error, friend.

You need this for more than just better GUI experiences – the internet is actively adversarial, now.

This is a terrifying exploit ("yes, absolutely"), but it is a one-time exploit that is not intended for sustained data xfer. It steals your initial cryptoseed (via SPI display linkage; no cryptographic exploit of ledger device is publicly-known, yet), and only has to broadcast one time from its literally-hand-wound antenna.

I believe one million+ devices are "suspected."

I'm just beginning to play around with Docker, and I have a spare eWaste Intel 4xxx (with dual PCI slots and two 56k modems!~); hoping that my own MacBook can "dock" in to my landline's RJ-11 "virtually" – that I can figure this out with LLMS as a dumbass electrician is incredible! – exciting stuff to learn'bout.

Here is their secret: they are looking out for themselves!

>If someone only watched Fox News

The majority US voter demographic is geriatric – same demographic grew us up on televisions, then never turnt them off.

Fortunately, Fox News' own demographic cannot live forever...

Can't wait to see 24/7 curated news disappear with the landline coax networks.

Dear SCOTex Brother:

Your brothers are ashamed of you ("right now").

Cool.

>>It's just welfare by another name.

Don't really care what you call it, what is your solution ("UBI" or "welfare" – who cares?)?

Because killing the majority of us zoo exhibits seems like the easiest solution, IMHO.

----

Have great Mondays, frens.

Four chairs.

Am I misunderstanding some "deeper meaning" ?

This is inevitable, comrade.

Or, 90% of us (that aren't zoo-worthy) will need to be exterminated. 2/3rds+ of us American't were "paycheck to paycheck" – a statistic which pre-dates Covid!

Eternal War is Peace™

>A disaster.

Pay peanuts, expect a circus.

At this point, we'll either have universal UBI -=or=- ongoing war.

Unfortunately, the latter is more profitable, so... the future is by design, probably.

I have ten desks in < 1000 sqft – to compartmentalize everything.

Only one machine is allowed to access google et. al. (my "slop bucket," which gets auto-imaged on every boot).

My tax iMac (2006) hasn't been online in two decades.

----

I've been playing with Docker (for the past month); the idea is cool, but a complete security nightmare; having read about the "guestWiFi hacks" across vlans, I think virtual machines aren't always a suitable solution (also read about two LLM-VMs communicating via CPU cahces – dam!).

I did it, once — most remorseful. Like them all: he's full of shit.

Also donated to Bernie, once – then ShareBlue gave it to a Clinton.

This political whoredom works best against our own interests.

This is correct; two of my three ZFS implementations are entirely local... the third (public-facing) covers the other twos' "limited usefulness."

Perhaps a vulnerability still exists (for one offline NAS, only): I use dedicated NICs (on each end) to direct-link my online NAS (which is otherwise local network, only, on a separate NIC), for routine backup.

Perhaps this leaves a bridge-LAN vulnerability?

But one is entirely offline, as are all its clients (dumb TVs, mostly).

Your on /hn/ and ¡¿don't?! have an entirely-local subnet, offline, for your NAS?

...with a hint of sarcasm, but the percentage is definitely a non-zero number.

Today? Today is that day... probably a yesterday or two, as well.
Re:iPhone Duo Teardown on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:04PM (#50280872)
I can't legally pay for parking in my city.

So I don't. Fines are very low (almost not worth paying, entirely), so I don't sweat it (and know where lots of "free" parking is).

----

Definitely this makes scheduling important – and then following through. I will typically arrive a bit early, and not leave until (they're) fifteen minutes late.

It is cumbersome but worthwhile; if I had family (or was "on call") this would obviously be impossible.

Re:New iMac with M6 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:06PM (#50278228)
>one of the magnets broke off the screen

I had a similar event (but only once) supporting university labs: one of those four "alignment pins" broke off; but they're not necessary once the magnets are engaged. Unfortunately, I had to completely re-disassemble the entire unit to shake out that metallic-breakoff.

The 2006 iMac is a dream to work on: the back plate (including stand) simply detaches, exposing access to everything without having to remove the LCD – this latter part is the worst part of any newer iMac-opening.

Thanks for sharing your similarities, fellow-oldening-hat.

As long as we're arresting extremists on all sides, I support your conclusions...

In psychedelic tongue: it drips well.

And it's getting so inexpensive (I can easily price many 120Hz systems, barely above $1000)!

How much (approx) was your son's build?

Re:Tell HN: I'm going on strike this November on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:33PM (#50277478)
All the data center work was on large crews lasting for months ("long-term" in construction), with hundreds of workers semi-coordinated across various trades.

A major problem in Unions is that cronyism is even good'ole'boy'er than the general US population's. My only touting of "join a union" is for would-be apprentices to "learn the ropes" about construction. Get paid to learn; retire elsewhere... [†]

They no longer allow this (at least not in 520), but I soon realized the best "life balance approach" to being IBEW was: enter in their non-traditional student pathway (i.e: olderfolk, CW/CE) and then never progress beyond 90%er [•] – to me, the extra 10% pay wasn't worth all the headache of working with management to coordinate jobsite goals. Many "ninety-percenters" remain, grandfathered (but slowly retiring).

[†] LU520's payscale isn't among "the best;" if you're in an area where your ticket-out is $70+/hr, then retiring IBEW probably makes sense...

[•] with Mad Respect for my boy Johnboy; hope you're retired by now!
