This whole mess started because we haven't been doing #1 when it comes to immigration.
It never ceases to amaze me how poorly catechized the majority of cradle Catholics are. I don't intend this to be directed at you, but it's a standing joke among traditionalist Catholics that "I was raised Catholic" is the preamble to a statement of either ignorance or heresy.
Re:Stupid Smart Pointers in C on Monday March 17, 2025 @08:26PM (#43394387)
Around 1994, when I was a nerdy, homeschooled 8th grader teaching myself coding I came up with something I was inordinately proud of. I had gotten a book on PowerPC assembly so using Metrowerks CodeWarrior on my brand-new PowerMac 7100 I wrote a C function with inlined assembly that I called debugf. As I recall, it had the same signature as printf, called sprintf and then passed that resulting string to DebugStr. But the part I was proud of was that it erased itself from the stack so when the debugger popped up it was pointing to the line where you called debugf. I'm still proud of it :-).
Re:The origins of 60-Hz as a power frequency on Friday February 07, 2025 @05:11PM (#42978086)
Yes! I was looking for this comment. Maybe because I didn't grow up with the metric system, but 60 feels like a much "rounder" number to me than 50.
Re:The forgotten war on beepers on Wednesday April 17, 2024 @06:06PM (#40070561)
I graduated high school in 2000. I knew 2 kids in that school with pagers, and the only reason I paged them was to buy weed...
Hell Yeah!!

I see your extended response now. Well, I'm happy to do some ironclad moralization.
Re:The biggest root cause of crime is fatherlessness on Wednesday December 13, 2023 @01:26PM (#38631839)
Well, whether or not fatherlessness is the actual cause (and I believe there is abundant evidence that it is), it seems very likely that partially rewinding the societal changes that have led to widespread fatherlessness are going to have a positive effect on crime. And yes, I'm talking about the sexual revolution.

"threatens neocons on their unipolar powertrip"? I haven't noticed that the primary opposition to nuclear power is from the right...

Wow, you don't have very many windows.
Re:When URL parsers disagree (CVE-2023-38633, librsvg) on Thursday September 07, 2023 @11:33AM (#37420464)
When I worked at one of the tech giants that develops a certain suite of office apps, the C++ class they used to model URLs in the cross platform layer had a flaw around escaped characters. I worked in the group that developed the iOS/macOS versions of the apps and we had a number of kludges in place to deal with conversion between these C++ classes and NSURL and CFURL. In my time on different occasions devs discovered the flaws and composed lengthy emails explaining the fixes that needed to be made, but the C++ class was too entrenched to be fixed. That was about 5 years ago, I doubt it has changed.

Surely you need to provide some details to justify such an accusation.
So if 5% of extra-legal searches result in dirt, then extra-legal searches are worth it?
I agree somewhat. Also, it's not always clear who the most legitimate heirs are in these cases. For example, why the Egyptian government and not, say, the Coptic Church? I don't have a source but I seem to recall reading once that Copts are genetically more similar to Ancient Egyptians than other modern Egyptian, who are predominantly of Arab descent.
Re:Ask HN: What game do you wish existed? on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @05:59PM (#31511213)
I must admit, I don't know what games are out there these days, but I want an adventure game like the original King's Quest, Space Quest, Hero's Quest, etc. but with modern graphics, of course. It is important that they be language-driven, like the originals, but taking advantage of modern nlp.
How can it be a "crazy idea" to leave what you describe in your first 2 paragraphs? Crazy just economically?

Some of those buildings remind me of The Objective Room in "That Hideous Strength."

"They suggested some kind of pattern. Their peculiar ugliness consisted in the very fact that they kept on suggesting it and then frustrating the expectation thus aroused."

Re:Infinite Mac on Tuesday April 26, 2022 @06:18PM (#31173874)
The first app I opened up was ResEdit; the jack-in-the-box gave me a big wave of nostalgia... But yeah, it's hard to separate fond memories of youth from the changes in computing. Plus when I was a kid learning HyperTalk and then C on System 7 it was all for fun; no one was asking anything of me. Now my coding supports my family; I haven't done any coding for fun since a few years ago when I took a sabbatical from my SDE job and worked half-time as a farm hand.
Re:Infinite Mac on Tuesday April 26, 2022 @04:55PM (#31173065)
Sigh, this makes me realize how much I loved computers when I was a kid (1990s) and how much I hate them now.
