Ukraine and even Europe don't need global coverage though. The Russian system that they're testing at the moment is geostationary satellites over Ukraine.
German car quality is a mark of how optimised manufacturers have got for building cars that work within 2 terms of 4 year finance plans.

You'd be foolish to think it correlates to any sense of innovation or entrepreneurialism.

Exactly what they're aiming for.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:27AM (#50130113)
Perhaps you should look at pedestrian fatality statistics in both the US and the EU. One is rapidly rising and one is falling year on year. I wonder which is which.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:20AM (#50130077)
Don't be daft, I don't think Europe's at risk of becoming irrelevant because they put a greater emphasis on pedestrian safety than the US.

Perhaps just look at a few ancient European towns with cobbled streets with no pavements, no wider than 2.5M and hairpin turns at many junctions. Perhaps it's just a product that doesn't suit the market.

Without routers, your email isn't going anywhere, it doesn't matter who wrote it.
Re:City building games have a Soul Problem pt.2 on Sunday October 04, 2026 @02:58PM (#49956761)
If you play the RTS Desperados it's still looks really good even though it was made in the early 2000s and it's all down to the the scenes being essentially painted. It's a shame this isn't done more often in my opinion.
I built a pen plotter and my biggest challenge was converting and previewing the GCode for plotter images. Recently though I've build a huge toolbox of tools with Codex using spare usage and it's an absolute game changer. Good use of it for sure.
Bit flips from cosmic radiation. Pretty common.
Re:Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips on Monday September 21, 2026 @03:24PM (#49792079)
If a small business is modifying the product and not telling the eventual customer they've done so how is that not fraud? I don't want to buy a Raspberry Pi with a memory chip from who knows who which might have not passed QA modified by people who may or may not do a decent job at soldering it to the board.
Re:How Poor People Buy Cars on Saturday September 12, 2026 @04:51AM (#49670384)
I think you greatly overestimate how many 8-10 year old EVs will actually require replacement batteries. Barring a few models with poor engineering choices, most cars will still have 80% of their capacity after 10 years and won't have the downsides of having a 10 year old ICE engine with a variable record of maintenance.
Isn't this usually because people don't like big jets flying over their houses.
Re:Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @03:34PM (#49632859)
Have you got any proof that anyone has been arrested specifically for a social media post?

The most common case is Lucy Connolly, who was arrested for inciting racial hatred and pleaded guilty to the crime which carries a prison sentence.

Or are you just a random non UK citizen who has been reading disinformation on social media?

Re:What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @03:11PM (#49632442)
Merchants aren't going cash only to sell your data, they're doing it because it's expensive to handle cash and makes their taxes a whole lot more troublesome too.

If you've got access to an Azure subscription and you don't pay the bill personally.
What's to stop someone spoofing a GPS signal during that fix?
This is mostly a solved problem. My ThinkPad track pad is as good as any Mac.
The difference being Swiss watches are elegantly engineered pieces of art whereas internal combustion engines of any kind are essentially just rube goldberg machines that we have collectively normalised as a society.
Re:A look under our trunk: what's in our compute on Saturday August 22, 2026 @12:24PM (#49401243)
A single bus journey is $20? That's insanely expensive.
Re:Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why? on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @04:46PM (#49352452)
I didn't think they'd completed the move yet, it's only partially on Azure - which to be fair could be another problem in itself.
Perhaps driven by the very low likelihood of anything positive coming out of this.
It costs money to campaign, it's not a seat any other party had a chance to win and it sends a clear message from the other parties that the whole stunt was a waste of everyone's time.

Some of those SFP cards can use quite a bit of energy on their own. They're not designed with energy efficiency in mind.

I've got an Optiplex with an i5 and two hard drives and that idles around 12W when idling.

I take it that you'll be pleased when a data center is proposed to be built behind your house then yes?
Re:You have been mislead about lightbulbs on Saturday August 01, 2026 @12:40PM (#49135933)
You might have poor quality incoming AC. Capacitors in the power supplies will be under more stress if you regularly have over/under voltages or small spikes and surges.
You can do the same with the GDID, it's stored in the registry.
Re:DARPA, U.S. Air Force fly AI-controlled F-16 on Thursday July 23, 2026 @05:14PM (#49028142)
Not in this case, but if you aren't building it to put humans in it at all, you can build it with higher requirements in mind. Traditionally there's no point building a plane that can withstand much over 9g.

I've got a few planks over a ditch in my garden. The bridge only needs to be designed for the load and then some. In this case, this seems to work just fine.

I recently got a trial for the Google AI Pro subscription and it burned through a week's in a single prompt. Quite impressive for sure.

The counter to this is the UK.Gov website. Very simple and basic, modern (maybe) but very accessible. Government websites should put accessibility over everything else.
