Re:Anthropic's growth just flattened (really) on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:57PM (#50346049)
I am a software developer and I don't see a huge boost since many months.

Actually I see very varying results in my work.

Sometimes I can let an AI refactor an entire codebase and then (in the same codebase) it generates absolute shitcode.

Re:Anthropic's growth just flattened (really) on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:40PM (#50345819)
Plus all the blockchains.
Re:Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:14PM (#50331379)
In an ideal world, politicians who don't work on improving the lives of their constituency wouldn't get voted for.

As that is not the case and improving the lives of their constituency doesn't necessarily get them voted for again AND whatever good they did may get undone before it really shows its effects: of course they only care about being reelected... Even if they had ideals and morals to begin with.

Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @06:41PM (#50331114)
I guess for people living in cities where different neighbours move in and out and have open WiFis.

If the devices still scan all the time...

Living on the countryside there is no such problem.

Ah, the good old magic trick!

But that's not the premise of the purge either.

The absolute majority just takes shelter and sits it out.

The unlucky people who can't but don't want to participate get slaughtered.

The crazy ones thrive

> Politicians are completely naive in their understand how people works

Some are, others aren't. They just accept it willingly.

Just as in the Purge movies politicians are exempt ;-)

Re:Tell HN: Remember to migrate away from .name domain on Saturday October 17, 2026 @06:51AM (#50129892)
tbh, as an owner of a .name (tld) I don't understand how this worked in the real world.

I have subdomains like {myfirstname}.{lastname}.name ... {lastname}.name is mine

So obviously {myfirstname}.{lastname}.name is a subdomain...

Could someone now have bought {myfirstname}.{lastname}.name and DNS would go to their page?

If so, I find the new behaviour way more sane...

If I wanted to sell a subdomain, I could do this, no questions asked. I just point the subdomain to another IP.

But I pay for {lastname}.name so it should be mine, just like any other .tld I have!

Re:Tell HN: Remember to migrate away from .name domain on Saturday October 17, 2026 @06:06AM (#50129616)
I don't think so. If you own it, you can have any subdomain.

At least I hope this is the case. I have a memorial page for my uncle under hisfirstname.ourlastname.name

I need to play around with this.

I am running on a Ryzen 5950X, 64GB DDR4 Ram and a Radeon RX 6700 XT with 12GB... I don't expect wonders, but I have between 11 and 120 (!) t/s.

I told it an open ended question: "What would you improve in this file at {location} in {bigger project}" and the context window seems to be too small. It's running in circles.

I must be doing something wrong.

Again, I am not expecting wonders and I am totally willing to accept that "I am holding it wrong".

using it in opencode

{ "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json", "provider": { "llamacpp": { "npm": "@ai-sdk/openai-compatible", "name": "Local llama.cpp", "options": { "baseURL": "http://127.0.0.1:8080/v1" }, "models": { "tiel-coder": { "name": "Tiel-Coder 35B A3B", "limit": { "context": 16384, "output": 4096 } } } } }, "model": "llamacpp/tiel-coder" }

Or I am not a developer after all.

Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:00PM (#50096751)
Exactly.

I'll stick to passwords in my passwordstore.

If this is no longer possible, then so is my participation in many services.

It would be good if we would use less resources.

But we are not.

It's just that some people don't get the newer resources.

Re:Yes, and on Friday October 09, 2026 @06:03AM (#50018377)
I also still enjoy it. In my spare time.

I've always enjoyed it. In my spare time.

Also I wouldn't go as far to say that I myself produce higher quality code than my peers.

I am between a 5/10 and a 7/10 programmer at best.

I bring other valuable skills though.

Re:Yes, and on Friday October 09, 2026 @02:54AM (#50016966)
I really and unironically applaud you, when the code you're writing has higher quality than the average AI produces AND it means something.

In the domains I get paid to work in, it simply doesn't matter.

The code was shit to begin with, because of hundreds of hacks due to underspecified or simply wrong requirements, bad code practices, architecture that couldn't keep up but was never fixed due to stubbornness...

Not saying we humans would do better or worse in general, just sharing my experiences.

I have customers where AI usage is absolutely forbidden and others where it's totally fine and colleagues vibecoded mess will come to bite them/us all.

People with money >> Politicians >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Average citizens.

But hey, you got Hollywood propaganda and unwavering patriotism to make up for it.

Re:Using Blu-ray M-Disk as Backup of Last Resort on Monday October 05, 2026 @06:02PM (#49971483)
With the decline in quality I am no longer confident my HDDs are actually a save backup strategy.

I have so many photos of vacations and people who I've buried over the years, that I don't want to lose.

So I was thinking about using Blu-ray M-Disks as well, these last couple of months.

Re:Getting the most out of Opus 5.5 in Claude and Claude Code on Saturday October 03, 2026 @06:14PM (#49948306)
Did you get paid the amount of three months?

It not: who becomes rich on all that productivity?

Nobody AMERICAN in his right mind will use... Wait, actually a lot of them will.

But for me, as a non american, non chinese person: I'll use whatever the fuck is the best and cheapest for my task, because that's how fucking Capitalism works.

If that means that a (proclaimed) "communist" country cleans the carpet with the self-proclaimed land of the free: so be it!

> A lot of devil in the details, and the context required to know what to focus on is rather vast.

That and you need to be able to even ask the right questions.

These are people that have NO IDEA about how computers or their software works.

Sure they can let it be explained by an LLM but unless they thoroughly study these things, they simply can't know which questions to ask.

Re:Sites in ChatGPT on Saturday October 03, 2026 @03:41AM (#49942181)
It was popular among developers!

An average customer of mine hasn't got the slightest interest in dealing with this stuff.

Sure, they show me llm generated prototypes these days of how they envision a certain feature, ui and ux wise.

But that's great, because even with AI I save time iterating with them.

But for the actual programming and maintenance they still come to me.

Why? Because THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN IT!

Re:Make Tmux the OS on Saturday October 03, 2026 @02:33AM (#49941847)
Actually for me it's different.

I've been using Tmux and later Zellij for many years, while I was on Ubuntu's Unity, then Gnome, KDE, i3 and lastly sway.

Until I switched to niri (https://github.com/niri-wm/niri) ... since then I haven't used tmux at all.

Very weird, come to think of.

Re:Sites in ChatGPT on Saturday October 03, 2026 @02:16AM (#49941772)
No.

If I can't work as a computer scientist anymore (I am my own business since many years), I'll simply do something else.

I have many interests and "talents".

Maybe I can work as a gardener, or I help the farmers around, or I do some social work, or I work as a garbage man, or I ...

I am not worried in the slightest on a personal level.

Society might crumble though.

But then again, was it ever more than barbarism in disguise?

Re:Sites in ChatGPT on Saturday October 03, 2026 @02:11AM (#49941753)
Good enough for many people, it seems.
Re:Prompting Claude Opus 5.5 on Friday October 02, 2026 @02:50AM (#49930543)
It seems to be a general trend among western societies.

There are many laws in the EU that cut away freedoms.

But such is the circle of life.

At some point people will break free again, possibly violently.

I don't believe in a 1984 scenario with eternally dull and nice citizens.

Human apes are violent by nature.
