Re:It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:30PM (#50329478)
i thought this was a post about abandoning a product based upon the actions of its CEO. that’s how i read it.

then i thought about other controversial CEOs from great product companies (like Musk) and i wanted to raise the question of when it’s right to abandon those great products because of what their leaders have done

i have a starlink, it’s a really really good product.

thanks for asking why and helping me understand how my comment may have been read differently. i appreciate it and will consider this moment when posting here again.

just get the colonoscopy, it's really not that bad. if ya haven't had one yet, i wrote this for u (30 second read of my experience):

Re:Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:12AM (#50257962)
i think crafting software has turned into something like making music. consider the movie Trolls World Tour, where there used to be one way of making it, then it splintered off into a ton of different styles.

everybody only likes their own style, and has trouble dealing with other people’s style.

maybe that’s what you mean by the total net feel/experience decreasing. in my world, it’s still harmonious, but it’s possible queen barb hasn’t showed up here yet

wow, “quality is no longer an objective” is a wild idea that feels dangerously negligent.

quality is all we have, it’s what makes us different from these agents.

quality is perplexing to agents because it requires a strange loop into asking why. there’s not always a clear answer. but i think the power is in the ambiguity.

if we don’t know why (or don’t care) then what happens if we all adopt this attitude at scale?

Re:Someone behind the software on Sunday October 18, 2026 @04:13PM (#50145007)
i don’t think they’re the same kind of value. AI wants to solve your problem, it doesn’t care about you (or your users). it doesn’t know what love or loss feels like. you can try to explain that to it all day, it just doesn’t care like a human can. it doesn’t know why, it doesn’t care why.

here's more captivating illustrations of cells and cellular mechanisms from David Goodsell (some of his pictures are used in the OP's article). i simply love his style and sense of color.

i've read and can highly recommend his book The Machinery of Life for a patient and visual explanation of these baffling machines!

Re:The Slow Formation of Durable Software on Thursday October 08, 2026 @08:17AM (#50004901)
good things take time because they grow from something like seed. as that seed grows, it figures out its local and global context. a curious and patient caretaker of this seed will spend a lot of time looking at it, understanding it, trying to figure out the right way to give the small plant a steady foundation. with care and attention, it could grow into a tree and attract all sorts of other insects, animals, and all sorts of life.

speed kills quality. it’s literally impossible to make anything good fast.

we know this, and it still applies to software. while we may be able to make things faster, they will never become good (or great) without an incredible amount of care, patience, and joy from its maker.

there are no shortcuts to quality. it will always take a lot of time to make anything good.

Re:Muse Gadgets on Friday October 02, 2026 @08:05PM (#49940116)
yes, but:

why build here? why should we grow our gardens in this factory farm?

if this muse gadget seems so cool, why not make your own?

don’t outsource your curiosity to people like this, they do not care about you, your family, or your livelihood. they want to control you; this is their toy that they made for you to become fascinated by

Re:The death of web development education on Thursday October 01, 2026 @05:56PM (#49927536)
the older your brain, the less plastic it is! lets remember what it might have felt like for you to write your first BASIC program or hand-code your own HTML website. there was a desire to understand :: HOW IT WORKS? HOW DID IT DO THAT?

just because our old-brains did it "the hard way" and now we have these LLMs that can just make it happen, doesn't mean that our little ones want to/should skip the steps of understanding HOW IT WORKS

me and my kids have been making all sort of silly games and my oldest is starting to wonder HOW DOES THAT WORK, PAPA??? and i'm like, well, let me show you this...

a magical thing! what a time to be alive!!! there is joy, but you have to conjure it!!

agree on that. stay safe out there

and a drunk monk would not make those mistakes?
Re:Management is forcing us to use AI on Monday September 28, 2026 @07:02AM (#49876149)
dude can you believe this crap? i’ve been hand-writing manuscripts this whole time and now my boss wants me to… use a printing press?! like what the hell????

me and the other monks aren’t gonna do this crap, we’ve been doing it our way forever and there’s NO WAY those things can do it as good as i can

Re:10 Tells of a Slop UI on Sunday September 27, 2026 @12:23PM (#49868133)
precisely, good things take TIME and EFFORT!

i personally don’t have an issue with the UI most LLMs generate, but in my opinion it’s ALWAYS a starting point to refine, resolve, and remove what shouldn’t be there.

there are no shortcuts to good UI (or anything else). u gotta put in the reps and have an open mind (not an empty head).

thanks
