Re:If this were a pill, you’d do anything to get it on Sunday April 28, 2013 @11:01AM (#5621440)
It's like it's a warm story that we propagate to make us feel great. As if we stand as demi-gods in comparison to the relative cavemen of 200 years ago. The most major accomplishment in respect to longevity appears to be... not letting our young perish. Which is obviously all well and good until this kind of argument is used to validify medicine perhaps beyond its merit.

Forgive the generalizations.

Re:Soylent Month Three on Thursday April 25, 2013 @09:36PM (#5611012)
I think if you thought about it for a moment you would realize that he is appealing to the concept of hacking. In this case, hacking diet, something everyone on this site can relate to. This is why it gets attention.

I'm on the fence as to whether I'll to wait and see how this turns out, with his volenteer base or to even hit up the Kickstarter to try it myself, as I personally am at a pivot point where I could change my diet significantly and benefit. If Soylent proves the easy route, so be it.

I also believe a lot of us are just curious.

Re:Why aren't younger Americans driving anymore? on Wednesday April 24, 2013 @09:36PM (#5605275)
A simple "No, SF has no bike lanes" would suffice, unless the idea of a bike line is foreign to you.
Re:Postgres on the GPU on Wednesday April 24, 2013 @10:11AM (#5601517)
On the flip side, if this is sufficiently adopted, it could present motivation to driver developers, thus improved drivers. Perhaps this and the linux gaming movement could mean some symbiosis for driver development.

Ignoring Windows as I guess I don't really take Windows servers too seriously.

Re:Duplicate your House Keys with your Phone on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @04:54AM (#5594020)
The victim wouldn't even know the key was cut by this service. So the friend/plumber/handyman or whoever could just take the picture, get the key cut and then raid the place without anyone knowing.

Seems legit.

Re:Sleep: Everything You Need to Know on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @01:18AM (#5593421)
According to an article I saw on HN a week ago, apparently, evidence shows we evolved to naturally wake up once each night about half way through, for around an hour. Of course, we went to sleep when it became dark and woke with the sun. Something that isn't conducive with todays lifestyle.

Re:Why aren't younger Americans driving anymore? on Monday April 22, 2013 @09:49PM (#5592879)
Do you guys have visually obvious bike lanes over there?
Re:Show HN: jsdares – learning programming visually on Sunday April 21, 2013 @08:48AM (#5584684)
I just wish it featured some JS syntax highlighting, true to spec JS linting (drop a semicolon and the parser errors) and perhaps CoffeeScript support. Not sure what the implications would be with learning CS before JS or during, but I support its presence none the less.
Re:What you can do with the Gimp on Saturday April 20, 2013 @07:42AM (#5581073)
It doesn't appear to be obvious in what way these pictures are enhanced, either, as one would need the originals to compare. I'd be more inclined to judge Gimp with pure digital art.
I dont think it's practical to rely on memory for passwords anymore. If it's a site you really couldnt give a damn about, then sure, as long as you're okay with whatever information you submit being potentially linked to that password and to any other information.
Re:Light Table a year ago on Saturday April 13, 2013 @09:06AM (#5543259)
I support this idea; but I think said cast should be made when light table is more consumer-ready persay. Perhaps when the dev is satisfied with it being a sublime-text legitimate rival.
Or just generate random 15+ character passwords for admin accounts. From the article it appears the concern is from brute forcing "admin" account passwords. Good luck bruting MT#r!}A1(hIQ4^pC*7`K.KGiL\&[A\k#TUC4R<R?
Re:Poll: What is your age? on Friday April 12, 2013 @03:18AM (#5537083)
One issue; on these charts there doesn't appear to be a link to the original HN thread. This should be there.
Re:Programmer? Back Pain? Try archery on Wednesday April 10, 2013 @12:20PM (#5526093)
Id like to suppliment the idea of picking up heavy things with instead, picking up yourself. By this I simply mean body-weight exercises. Push ups, pull ups (buy a pullup bar for a door arch), running, biking, trampolining.

One; it's best for those whom are already unfit, and two, it's very accessible. Weights are usually for intermediate/advanced bodybuilding and beyond. Though, if you're comfortable with weights, regardless, then you're comfortable with them.

If your back is your issue, as per this article, then ill concede that doing rows and deadlifts kind of requires weights. Though, I suppose you could at least do planks.

Re:My Code made it to a Hollywood Movie on Saturday April 06, 2013 @12:11PM (#5503992)
I've always thought of POI as having above-average tech related consistency compared to other public network US shows.

Some of it still makes me cringe, but when you put it into the perspective of their general audience it does seem, to me, that it's more complex than 95% of said audience can understand. Additionally, I haven't noticed many blatantly stupid/irrelevant errors in the shows technospeak. It's all generally, vaguely, sorta legit.

I mean, I am not seeing any gooey interfaces in visual basic yet (ignoring the typical beep-boop flashy computer interfaces).

Re:Why Ruby? on Friday March 22, 2013 @10:07AM (#5422945)
That pseudo code in CoffeeScript is essentially "do ->", in respect to being happy with node.js and syntax. CS is getting to be rather popular and when it comes to open source projects, anyone who understands JS pretty much gets CS, especially if they're familiar with Python/Ruby.
Re:Two Months of Soylent on Tuesday March 19, 2013 @07:19AM (#5400162)
"Scars that I'd had for years are barely visible now."

Anyone have any idea whatthe root (ingredient) of this subjective observation may be?

Re:Two Months of Soylent on Tuesday March 19, 2013 @07:14AM (#5400137)
I think he was after information concerning the heart and running as join degradation from running is, afaik, common knowledge. I was under the impression running improved heart strength.

http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/heart-attack-risks-are-great...

Such articles state that endurance running (as opposed to sprints) , or any edurancy activity, increase heart attack chance.

No exercise is purported as the greatest heart risk, so perhaps high intensity low endurance is best for heart health? I'd imagine it wouldn't build stamina.

Re:Future of Firefox DevTools on Tuesday March 19, 2013 @12:07AM (#5398866)
Brilliant. A friend and I were just talking about how cumbersome it's to work on a dark themed website using Firebug due to the default burn-your-eyes bright contrast bleeding into the site.

Keep it up, can't wait to ditch Firebug.

Re:Programming Cheat Sheets on Friday March 15, 2013 @09:10PM (#5383929)
I think I know why. It's the first google images result that is even remotely logo-friendly.
My god. How underpaid were the web devs of this site? They must have gotten to the point where they could proclaim "It works now!", then thats when the funding must have been got cut off. It's that or, they are just bad. Meanwhile, the site looks bad.

It's really, really not hard to use image sprites (not necessary here); merged JS and merged CSS.

That is cool. Link?
Re:Automatic: Your Smart Driving Assistant on Tuesday March 12, 2013 @10:13PM (#5366377)
Well from what I have seen, you buy that device and then you install an app on your phone. Surely you could use a firewall on your phone to block outside contact as the connection between the device and your phone is over a closed bluetooth network.

I'm just assuming here that the phone app doesn't self destruct when there is no internet connection.

No difference beyond prepackaged software. It's just a PC in a small box, nothing special.

Re:Men who spy on women through their webcams on Monday March 11, 2013 @05:22AM (#5355659)
SubSeven, anyone :)?

Also, apparently it was relaunched in 2010 and soon after their site was hacked[1], they also lost their source code - ahaha. No backups, 2010. Christ.

Yes but surely Garriot isn't completely naive as to think we won't judge the graphics and the game poorly as a result, as he doesn't choose to mention or confirm that said graphics are placeholder.

I think the graphical engine they're using, the shading, the models, are trite, including the UX design - and it sucks, because if it doesn't improve the game won't be worth most peoples time. Runescape, graphically, in 2013 doesn't seem too appealing!

Re:A SimCity Update on Saturday March 09, 2013 @01:17AM (#5347610)
It only appears crazy to those who find themselves desperate to play said games. Others, who aren't, or have created boycotts, can make decisions based on DRM.
Re:Tern – Intelligent JavaScript editing on Thursday March 07, 2013 @05:42AM (#5337028)
> But that is a proprietary system tied to a single IDE. If the crowd-funding succeeds, Tern will be an open system that can (and will) be plugged into a variety of editors and IDEs.

Hopefully, that will happen. Sounds very cool though, as my IDE, sublime text, is rather underpowered in the intelligence department I'm afraid.

I could imagine it applying .tmLanguage scopes to words in the document, where you could colorize different variables according to type (I would opt for different background shades, myself). Then, mixed type colors (prompting you to click it and see what Tern says) when you can't know. Damn, that would be helpful.
