While I applaud the effort. It's almost obsolete now. When they have a Hyperloop Network then I will be impressed, but given how things look, they will have it before the US..

That is so cool...

I think the printing press was a key invention which was needed for this. So many great things got lost because in history there was only 1 or few copies of it.

"Workflow" is synonymous for: crappy defined human powered process which should do thing but not always do.

IMO the challenge to organize people for arbitrary tasks in arbitrary structures is something that will be discovered by blockchains. DAO and smart contracts leading the way.

See Neal Stephenson, the diamond Age. Yes we need a tutor.

Furthermore many times this topic was discussed here on hackernews, with good insights and further links. Now how to find those?

Re:Ask HN: What do you wish someone would build? on Saturday September 24, 2016 @03:56AM (#12569965)
Simply use social networks where the data belongs to you.
Re:Ask HN: What do you wish someone would build? on Saturday September 24, 2016 @03:55AM (#12569959)
You mean getting the benefits of functional programming without learning functional programming? ;)

Once you find a way into it you really see its all "Lego's". You'll get there!

Implement wikipedia as a Web 3.0 aka decentralized service using technologies like IPFS.

To show that this kind of setup can be cheaper than what they are running on today.

Your blog looks very interesting. You should share some links of it here on hackernews!

yes but apps? Apps are just a relict of the mobile 1.0 area, which should be dissolved by web 3.0. yes the monopolgies build their devices and used them to create more monopolies. It should be eventually by models of hardware/software symbioses which gets more benefits from collaborating (blockchain backends). Its very good to see a lot of blockchain related projects at the conference, the path to web 3.0 is open!
Sorry but its 2016, publishing a paper is not enough. Alan kay of all should now we need more , we need:

The three/four pillars of reproducible research

Often in the discussions around open and reproducible science we focus three main types of research products

1. the paper: the traditional narrative document, often 2. the data: increasingly appreciated as a first-class citizen of scientific record with data repositories providing DOIs 3. the code: recognized as a research product, but the last to be integrated into literature system and given DOI

4. the environment: a critical and under-appreciated ingredient for computational reproducibility

THAT should be the minimum for all science projects IMHO. What do you think?

Like in my other reply I make a strong demand for reproduce able science.

Where is the integration build of frank? Just one binary with source that work, alan kay did run some demos on a mac. Its too bad that this great software is now starving on some researcher archives :(

I call for reproducible science:

https://twitter.com/KyleCranmer/status/728644857288372224

Where is the CI Server of the project? It can't be that hard.

I have kind of big issues with the results from the research. Sure they always say: ok its just research we don't mind if its not "finished".

But: where is the source? Some sub systems sources are available (Nile,Gezira,Cola, Ometa..). But the state of the projects does vary strongly.

Also for such a system you need something that works, you need continues integration.

You need reproducible science.

where is a reproducible build of the "frank" system that STEPS did create?

reproducible science and build should NOT be a big problem IMO.

Yes exactly my point(people having conflicts) but to resolve them we can't simply "stop" doing cosmethics, we have to be concious about why we use so much of that ( human nature + history) and then think of alternatives.

If you like we need ome kind of migration or negoating strategy.

The problem is people do not live in a vacuum , we live in a attention economy. And people go straight for what they where thaught with ( tradions and values from social environment) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs

Love (cosmetics) is at a lower level ( which means it has a higher priority for most people) then Self-actualization or Self-transcendence (space). Do not forget where we came from, thousands of years there were concepts like cosmetics. But space is alien to most people they can not touch it, they can not percieve or concieve it.

Thats the problem we should tackle IMO.

Re:"Payload to Mars" Added to SpaceX Pricelist on Sunday May 01, 2016 @06:09AM (#11605618)
You might see cosmetics as an atempt to maximize the result of ones own reproduction potential.

About lying to each other, another contradiction. Of course everyone wants honesty, as long as it doesn't hurt oneself.

Re:"Payload to Mars" Added to SpaceX Pricelist on Sunday May 01, 2016 @02:31AM (#11605149)
You simply do not understand what cosmetics is about. As Many others in sub-replies to this one. One could say you do not understand human nature, DNA or anthropology. Cosmetics is not about something "unnecessary" it is about increasing your chances with reproduction.

And now tell me what more important thing that reproduction could be encoded in our genes? Second to reproduction is feeling well. For whatever strange reasons our history shaped society, people today have to live in it and they, of course tend to try to maximizes their happiness.

Some People feel better when they get attention (again DNA and anthropology). Of course YOU want to go to space. And by you I mean all in this thread who despise cosmetics in favour of space travel, simply. Because humans are not simple we have deep contradictions embedded in our DNA and society forged traditions.

Yes I agree with you all very much we should go to space BUT to be able to do so we first need to find consensus on each individual happiness weighted against the demands for happiness from other people, of the whole world. Its as simple as that. And I don't have to tell you that concepts like nations do not necessarily help in achieving that.

We are moving up the ladder(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale), towards a global society. In that we can not ignore a single persons mischief as we do today.

I hope you see see that its not about "superficial" cosmetics, but about us as humans. And how to be happy, all around the world. We can and should do it but it will look very different to what the world looks today. And of course our anthropology is fighting us here hard again. We want the result of change but not change what is necessary to do that, that is to change ourselves (To acknowledge other people, be more peaceful and thoughtful about resources, etc..)

So again what do you think about cosmetics?

Re:Leaf: Machine learning framework in Rust on Tuesday March 08, 2016 @09:28AM (#11245381)
I think this you can view this from a different point of view.

In my opinion this is because what people think software is.

So if you see software as code which expresses what you want, the question is what do you do when it does not do what you want wrong, or do you want something additionally.

So software really is our desire for some specific thing. But it is also a tool which can express arbitrary things. So its a mirror which reflects back on us to discover our real intentions and desires.

Eventually its more of a conversation in which you expand and direct your intentions. And programming or software is just one way to do that.

I think eventually AI will be able to deliver such reflecting conversations to us, the question would be which medium (hardware, operating system, programming language) will it use.

I do not think it will use building blocks (hardware, operating system, programming language) created by humans. Because those are to incomplete and arbitrary.

remember the building blocks allow for plenty of room to allow bootstrapping on multiple levels. An AI could create blocks to create a solution that is so very simple we can't even imagine, yet is unthinkable for humans right now.

so you say prototyping is easier without a DSL?
Re:Investigate switching away from GitHub on Friday February 12, 2016 @12:09PM (#11088650)
Yes absolutely, I think self hosted conted and hash addressed binares would be a great thing to investigate!
This shows (again) the fundamental issue with digital identity.

People try to save their data or 'status' like stars from one provider to another, while painfully experiencing that vendors only lockin their data, but it belongs to them.

It will be very interesting when there rises a plattform for digital trust which gians enough users. Could be comming from the programming community first.

Does anyone see things like GitTorrent as a soulution to the problem?

https://github.com/cjb/GitTorrent

ZeroMQ , Pieter Hintjens Blog and Talks has some more details.
Re:Eve: My Concerns on Friday January 29, 2016 @05:07PM (#10998893)
I DO think "programming" in 10 years will look quite a bit different than today.

For that to come, a paradigm shift would need to happen. Now what could cause that shift? In my opinion its blockchain technology.

I think one of the platforms which allow to run Code on blockchain will reach critical mass, here is a nice intro talk to one of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_LK0t_qaPo

You may ask but what about my beloved javascript, c++, python or java? Well there is plenty of that used in the implementation of ethereum. And they even try to make their language look like javascript a lot ( look for solidity) to attract developers. But those are just aesthetics which come due to bootstrapping.

And bootstrapping is THE key issue here which eve doesn't even begin to deal with, which would deal with interesting questions like:

How many programs/functions/snippets would a blockchain need to become "liveable" by itself? 10000? 100000? more?

People today think but I do this great "app" and people cando such cool things with it. But the point is, very much as Alan Kay also says, apps are just the wrong thought. Appstores are a JOKE for the end user, you can buy what you want , genius, but can you combine two programms to make it do soemthing interesting? No you can't, you would need files and formats , but ahh.. that war has been lost way long ago. We need maximal flexible programs, code, snippets. Write something on your own, include something here, send a message there and so on. Something like a giant gloabal object or actor space.

Digital Identity, no user EVER wants to log in, remember? So just get that working, it can be solved with the crypto infrastructure in place. Scaling to millions of users? Scaling to billion of users?

Most of the solutions, which try something today, including eve, try to do something which is based on a webbrowser. But the point of these "future" things should be how to bootstrap OFF the current browser (technical AND content wise) mess we have today.

So no I'dont see eve giving anything of interest, I don't see it capable to grow into a network. If eve tries to "solve" programming I can't see it, I made some notes about other interesting approaches here: https://gist.github.com/AndreasS2501/30ffda6d10b1c7ac53b1
