Re:Silicon Valley has a mental health crisis too (2019) on Tuesday September 27, 2022 @01:26PM (#32998359)
Then you have to admit the alternate explanation that people do not identify as having PTSD when they do, either because they don't know the signs or because it would be useless or embarrassing to do so.

Self-reporting is fraught when it comes to psychiatric disorders for a lot of reasons.

Yeah, Portland was basically wiped off the map.
Re:Mexico Is Considering Removing DST on Saturday September 24, 2022 @09:20PM (#32968121)
DST is (1) but synchronized. People could change their schedules to negate DST, and I'm sure some do.

Anyway, I don't want touch-grass time during my useless lunch hour, I want usable daylight hours after work during which to do outdoor things in the warmth of the sun. Where I am, people mostly seem to want year round DST (but of course it wouldn't be DST anymore, it would just be "the time").

Different places can and will do what suits their needs.

Wow, bad to the ass
More than 1500 people died when Titanic sank.
A company can respond without a "media department" or whatever.
Re:That annoying shade of blue (2018) on Thursday September 15, 2022 @11:20AM (#32853404)
This is navel gazing along the lines of cocktail-fueled debates over a tree falling in a forest. Does light still have a color if no one is around to see it?

Fundamentally these words have lots of reasonable wiggle room to expand or narrow their definitions. Still, lots of technical domains would like to be explicit about what is meant, especially when reusing common words, which is why man invented the glossary.

Unfortunately this hasn't stopped endless argumentation over whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable. For whatever reason, it's often presumed that the definition of fruit used in botany has "won", even though botany has nothing to tell us about what a vegetable is or how to distinguish one from a fruit.

That's amazing!
Re:Nuclear-Powered Cardiac Pacemakers on Friday September 02, 2022 @11:12AM (#32691757)
That's right, and it's illegal for rich and poor alike. That's how you know it's fair.
Re:Is the internet killing the nude beach? on Thursday September 01, 2022 @12:13PM (#32678571)
I don't view social media justice as positively as you do. Even when it seems like the person really deserves it, those subreddits etc. that exist for no reason other than to gawk at terrible moments in other people's lives aren't doing anyone any favors. There are no limits on the length or severity or appropriateness of the punishment.

At the same time, the worst of society doesn't seem all that cool to me but it could just be unusual times.

Re:Film: Frame Interpolation for Large Motion on Wednesday August 31, 2022 @11:35AM (#32663561)
You may not approve of it but I doubt you "can't wrap [your] head" around it.
I think it's a mistake to roll out this word whenever you don't know how long something will take but I wish you well!
It doesn't mean forever but it is widely understood to mean that there is no foreseeable resolution in the near future. I think most of us know to avoid the word unless we're signaling some degree of permanence.
Re:Cancelling student debt is essentially printing money on Friday August 26, 2022 @12:42PM (#32609723)
Sorry, students. We can't forgive any debt for you because you weren't a credible threat to the government.
Re:Apple expands Self Service Repair to Mac notebooks on Monday August 22, 2022 @11:28AM (#32552846)
Only if they can prove that your lipservice caused the damage in question, which should be avoidable with the use of antistatic lipstick and regular blotting to ensure the lips are suitably dry.
Oooor they can sell it, as originally stated. Goodness.

The point is reduce land entitlement a little bit. Yes, there's going to be some light incentive to cut loose and that's OK.

Re:Ask HN: What helped you sleep better? on Sunday August 07, 2022 @01:46PM (#32378204)
This one can be hard to broach with your partner, for intimacy reasons, but I think the switch benefitted us both.
Re:Fake IMDB credits on Sunday August 07, 2022 @01:39PM (#32378162)
A lot of what is labeled and sold as "SEO" might as well be diet fraud. Plagiarism, false advertising, astroturfing, etc. It certainly isn't just letting the Google bot know what your website is about.
I don't think of myself as the kind of person to cause an "incident" but this might do it. A security escort out of that nightmare might be worth the consequences and embarrassment.
I think we only care about the presentation of fees to consumers assessed separately from the advertised price. Countless costs of doing business (and markup) are built into the advertised price. At least it is very simple for the consumer to compare prices.

A per-transaction credit card fee doesn't raise the unit price. Getting hung up on the evolving details of gas stations and credit card processing isn't the point.

Re:A Retrospective on the 2015 Ashley Madison Breach on Wednesday July 27, 2022 @06:55AM (#32248933)
Quite a yarn you're spinning. But can it be even more reductive and clichéd?
No, I don't think they are. For example, a credit card processing fee doesn't raise the price of a gallon of gasoline.

There is supposed to be a difference between markup and a fee. We don't have to hash out what exactly the difference is, just observe that there is a difference.

It's a common grift to hide part of the price in unadvertised "fees" so that consumers will have a harder time comparing options but it is just that, a grift. It's deception.

Re:TV, or not TV: the story of our bike box (2019) on Monday July 18, 2022 @01:35PM (#32140928)
They're just a common large item known for being expensive and fragile and they have a distinctive box shape. Not sure it goes any deeper than that.
They are other researchers in the field. Literally, your peers.

Yes, they have other work to do.

Re:GoDaddy locks out derivatives of Chrome on Thursday July 14, 2022 @01:48PM (#32099274)
While I have mixed feelings about capitalism coopting lgbtq causes to make a quick buck, reducing lgbtq or pride to anal sex is some shameful bullshit.
Re:New in Calibre 6.0 on Monday July 11, 2022 @11:06AM (#32057130)
The alternative reality where all of those functions are handled by independent pieces of software, or even worse by software not specialized in ebooks at all, is not necessarily better.

In fact I'd bet money it it would be less useful and less productive and much more forbidding to users.

More self-evident than outrageous but alright.
