Re:Always Talk to Strangers on Tuesday August 19, 2014 @06:33PM (#8200192)
not only is it healthier but the networking can be very useful.
Maybe this will be the push needed for Uber to take Lyft out of the competition.

Re:Steve Ballmer steps down as board member at Microsoft on Tuesday August 19, 2014 @06:15PM (#8200115)
Anytime you care desperately about a cause or entity you branded as "yours", a certain irrationality has to go hand in hand with that. Without that emotional attachment to something that leads you to make those decisions, you wouldn't get some of the best gut decisions either. Give and take.
Re:Tech's Fiercest Rivalry: Uber vs. Lyft on Tuesday August 12, 2014 @05:22PM (#8170270)
Ive also had an experience where my lyft driver worked for Uber also. She said the clientele is different for each company. Lyft is more hip and friendly people. Uber seemed to be richer looking and less talkative.

Living in San Diego, Ubers $10 Tijuana trips will be a huge success.

Re:Workers In Windowless Offices Lose Sleep on Tuesday August 12, 2014 @05:01PM (#8170145)
I feel that workers would be more productive as well if they receive natural light during the day. It would simply make them happier.
Re:Lightspeed – A Browser Experiment on Friday August 08, 2014 @05:49PM (#8155240)
I love the idea of the simplicity. Would be especially useful for not so tech savvy adults.
Using Tj to businesses advantage is a really beneficial idea. Uber's current $10 rides across the boarder is a great example of this. Safe and cheap transport for people which will also make Uber a good amount of money.
Re:Colors – A nicer color palette for the web on Friday August 01, 2014 @04:39PM (#8122691)
All of the colors are much softer than the old pigments, gives the page a much more friendly and inviting feel. Most modern websites seem to use these similar colors.

Re:San Jose Police Have a Drone on Tuesday July 29, 2014 @04:29PM (#8104819)
The use of these unmanned drones should be done more frequently. Not only do they protect officers from dangerous, unknown situations, but in man chases or car chases they would be much cheaper to operate than a helicopter.
Re:How GoG.com is growing beyond a back catalog on Tuesday July 22, 2014 @05:29PM (#8071664)
Great idea. I have never heard of this company before but I would love to start playing my old favorite games again.
Re:Google Voice Search Attack on Android [pdf] on Tuesday July 22, 2014 @05:23PM (#8071633)
How easy is it for hackers to be able to take control of your phones camera or speakers?
Mobile wallets are definitely going to become more popular as a day by day tool. With Coin startup and bit coins, digital currency is on the rise.

Re:Be aware of phishing at airbnb on Monday July 21, 2014 @12:01PM (#8064282)
@Poster and @Everyone: I just returned on July 1st from traveling through 8 different countries over a month's span, and AirBnB'd the whole trip. A fellow traveler also experienced the same tragic incident in Berlin. He came to the conclusion that he was logged in to the website via safari on an insecure network and was redirected to the fake site. Its a serious bummer but there was nothing he could do. The best and most secure way to use AirBnB is through their mobile app, not by login into their "site" on an insecure WiFi NetWork. Search through hosts and seriously read their reviews. I contacted everyone before hand and would not book unless I received a response.

@everyone: I returned from Barcelona three weeks ago. I rented a very nice apartment in the heart of the Gothic Quarter using AirBnB. As far as AirBnB being illegal, I don't think that is correct. I have many friends who have studied abroad and when they would leave Spain to go travel they would throw their apartment on AirBnB to make a couple bucks. Like with traveling anywhere, just be careful.

Re:Microsoft to Shutter Xbox Entertainment Studios on Thursday July 17, 2014 @04:46PM (#8050110)
The downfall may have been that MSFT tried to do too much and enter to many little niche markets. Glad to hear that Halo will continue. I have been following that game series for a decade now.
Re:Turning College Into a No-Thought Zone on Wednesday July 16, 2014 @04:47PM (#8044465)
There shouldn't be free speech zones on any campus, public or private. Unless what people are saying is malicious, inappropriate or offensive then they should be allowed to do whatever they want.

Re:The new sign on French menus on Wednesday July 16, 2014 @04:31PM (#8044363)
100% agree. You need to do a good amount of research before traveling anywhere, let alone somewhere with as much of a restaurant scene as France.
Re:Amazon leaks Kindle Unlimited on Wednesday July 16, 2014 @04:29PM (#8044355)
The convenience and efficiency of being able to read any book instantly will be a huge boost for education as well I think more people will start reading more books due to this product.
She may not be the smartest person, but either Kim K. or someone close to her is a VERY smart businessperson.
Re:Ask HN: Are good jobs a myth? on Tuesday July 15, 2014 @05:09PM (#8039007)
Currently in an internship at a software company in San Diego. Like was mentioned before, having the internship itself as an occupation is not fun. That being said, you really have to put your best foot forward when doing the bitch work. It's a lot like pledging a fraternity, except the tasks you're assigned usher you into a career hopefully in a field you genuinely have interest. It's worth it, but it sucks initially.
While we're at it why don't we unite North and South Dakota to form one universal "Dakota"? What about the glorious state of "Carolina"? It's very irritating that the conversation always seems to be about California. California shouldn't be divided just because different regions offer different things.
Re:Steven Colbert On Vessyl Digital Cup [video] on Tuesday July 15, 2014 @04:21PM (#8038737)
Colbert raises a great point about the practicality of it though; why would you take the time to pour a beverage into the Vessyl just to get the same readings you could have obtained from the initial container?
Re:Floppy Bird: A Flappy Bird clone in 16-bit x86 assembly on Tuesday July 15, 2014 @04:19PM (#8038725)
This simple game has gotten so much attention since it was released (and ten taken down).
Re:Net neutrality on Monday July 14, 2014 @05:22PM (#8033329)
What we should put on priority is city wide wireless internet capabilities. I think there are some early versions of this in some states but it would be very useful if it were more widely used.
Re:How much do salaried programmers really work? on Monday July 14, 2014 @04:59PM (#8033206)
Agreed. I work in a salary job now, and find myself not pushing to do the extra work as much, just since I know that I will be paid my salary almost regardless, and that there is close to no incentive to finish a project fast. People like independent contractors or consultants that get paid by the project do their work FAST and WELL. I've worked with many.
