Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:11AM (#50335771)
I didn’t go though every level, but do you mean when it asks for the local LAN IP address?
Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @09:32PM (#50332444)
I guess this is the part where you claim to have ever done graduate or higher level research before, that wasn’t just a PI just giving you pre defined, contained side project for a summer.
Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:06PM (#50331321)
That sounds close to what human researchers do as well. Big part of getting grants/doing graduate work is finding a tractable problem. It requires constant refinement of what the scope and direction of focus.
I don’t know, I feel like he is using a lot more convincing arguments than just being dismissive without real substance like you are. When you say huge externalities are you referring to something that hasn’t been seen in other major industrial paradigm shifts?
Eh, we all say we don’t need the best model, but especially for more personalized request/Advice there is sort of a FOMO feeling, where you are afraid weaker models will miss something and directs you down a more inefficient path.
Re:Official Claude Code extension compromise on Friday October 30, 2026 @06:57PM (#50311191)
This is wrong.
Re:Backdoors in official Claude Code extensions on Friday October 30, 2026 @09:21AM (#50303512)
They already got my post autoflagged. Just the run-of-the-mill disinformation campaign.
Re:Backdoors in official Claude Code extensions on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:12AM (#50302854)
VS Code doesn't allow forks to use their marketplace, I think. At least with VSCodium, they don't. I think they even patch a workaround where you could download almost all extensions' .vsix files.
Re:Backdoors in official Claude Code extensions on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:11AM (#50302835)
Don't worry, it isn't, just a regular Anti-AI clickbait post. A fake Claude Code extension was available on Cursor (not VSCode regular). Uploaded by someone that wasn't Anthropic. 5k Cursor users affected.
Re:We Won't "Just Hang Out" on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:28AM (#50286011)
Yea, also it may be just his own personality, but it seems like he is really passive when it comes to human interactions. It’s like he doesn’t consider that there are people who are extroverted and want to talk to others. I remember in college people who would actually knock on random people’s doors to introduce themselves to them. I know he will say that it’s because it’s school, but they struck be as the type that would do that sort of thing anywhere, even if it was an apartment building instead of a dorm.
But they definitely wouldn’t do that.
Re:Mac Studio M5 Ultra 512GB Officially Released on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:29PM (#50278644)
> Apple is extremely good at calculating how much inventory they should produce.

That doesn't really matter though for a physical product, unless you are implying they are 1) selling it at a loss or 2) not attempting to maximize profits from the product. If they sell out, it means they hit the target profit from the sale of the product.

Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:25PM (#50277264)
OK, didn't realize that. Makes sense, I guess. Was holding out on buying a new laptop since May for this, definitely not going to wait another year.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:18PM (#50277111)
But I assume they are planned/developed at this point, why not release it with the new Pro?
Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Sunday October 25, 2026 @05:21AM (#50229680)
Claude Code?
Re:C# now beats Rust on WASM size on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @06:50AM (#50178780)
Slightly off topic it is just so bizarre how often Claude uses this turn of phase. It’s almost seems forced here. Anthropic has to be hard coding it to do this.
Re:The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @01:50AM (#50176567)
Barbiturate withdrawal can absolutely kill you, as it is the same process of benzodiazepines and alcohol withdrawals. The other issue is that barbiturates themselves can easily kill you due their MOA, and low therapeutic index
Yea the m is quite off, I know nothing about fonts but the middle tinge is too long, or it’s too symmetric, the right corner is too sharp or something. And it is repeated so much in the example text that works against it.
Re:The Brain Sandwich on Monday October 19, 2026 @01:50AM (#50148823)
I think you are misssing the economics of the situation, which the GP is implicitly referring to. You have 24 hours in a day. A person that is making a web game that he wants to release cannot spend all of his effort chasing one in a million bugs, as that would eat into the time he has to actually make a great and engaging game. He can’t worry about how the game renders on Internet Explorers running in PowerPC. If you are making a kernel, a single RCE in an edge case (worse, even in a adversarially induced edge case) can equate to an emergency patch and general loss of trust in your system. The kernel programmer is even incentivized to do the opposite of the web game guy, which is remove functionality that they do not think they can reasonably completely test. So yes, edge case importance matters differently in different applications.
Re:Someone behind the software on Sunday October 18, 2026 @07:34PM (#50146600)
AI is very good at writing, in a vacuum. The issue with AI writing isn’t quality, it’s 1) shows the prompter may not have but as much effort as one would expect from a polished writing and make amateur mistakes 2) uses cliches that are grating due to being very easy to recognized at this point. If you submit a LLM written article to a website/paper in 1990, no one would say that it is a technically poor piece of writing.
Re:OpenCode Hacked: User credentials leaked on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:50PM (#50137418)
Do you work for OpenCode? How do you know this? Every similarly sized start up would have added the statement “OpenCode Desktop users are not affected.” The fact they didn’t means they can not definitively rule that case out. It would be prudent to rotate out your third party keys in this situation, especially if it is a API key with a high drain limit.
Re:OpenCode Hacked: User credentials leaked on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:29PM (#50136179)
If OpenCode is not releasing all of the details about the exposure at the moment, it likely would be a good idea to rotation keys for the connected services at this point
Re:OpenCode Hacked: User credentials leaked on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:22PM (#50136117)
OpenCode is the name of the company though.
Re:OpenCode Hacked: User credentials leaked on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:10PM (#50136024)
Probably another tool help steal more tokens. Or to probe more controversial topics without fear of getting banned. Would you be able to check in the history of what they made?
Re:Someone on Torrent Sites Kept Fucking with My Sonarr on Thursday October 15, 2026 @09:28PM (#50112612)
Weird, I didn’t feel as though it attempted to hide that it was AI written at all. In fact, it is so cliche-ly Claude written it comes off as a parody.
Re:Tiny Little Office on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:53PM (#50098163)
I agree with you, but it is so funny that three years ago, a website that look like this would probably make the front page for its excellent design alone. Now, it gives off similar energy to a wix website.
Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:04PM (#50061221)
I have not made a comment about him being a bad mathematician or academic, nor about what he contributed to mathematics. He is a tenured professor at UCLA, and won a Fields Medal. I am sure that in academic venues he is very well known, and I am not going to refute your story that math students are asking for his autograph after giving a lecture. The thing is, the level of public attention he is getting now isn't at the same level as for being a great mathematician. The only other event in his life when he got this level of non-academic coverage was when he was a child prodigy, which is my point.
Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Monday October 12, 2026 @02:48PM (#50060976)
I am confused, none of my claims have been shown to be wrong. Since you didn't even put the claim that was shown wrong in your reply and resorted to vague handwaving, I do not think you would be able to actually point out the wrong claim I have made. I do agree that entering a conversation without actually reading the thread isn't the best strategy, however.
Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Sunday October 11, 2026 @08:28PM (#50049706)
>there were literal queues to get his autograph.

What I would expect of someone who goes to an lecture of a professor. I never said he was completely unknown; just that he didn't have widespread recognition outside of academia. Getting autographs after an academic lecture doesn't dispute this.

>He's just gaining popularity in your bubble, which is probably not much larger than the audience he previously had.

The reason why he is gaining this popularity isn't anything to do with his academic achievements though. It's because of him being a child prodigy that is commenting on AI in math. So yes, he is reaching much further than his base, especially because of OpenAI's advancements in math and what it means about AI capability going forward. He has essentially positioned himself as the voice of mathematicians' position on AI and math.

Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Sunday October 11, 2026 @07:18PM (#50049088)
Was he? He was a child prodigy, which got him a lot of coverage in wider media, but then grew up and really became known in math circles. I'm sure he made lots of contributions to pure math and all and has won multiple academia-focused awards, but he didn't really make news outside of the math/academic area. Suddenly, with this AI math thing in the past year or two, he is starting to get more non-academic focused attention.
