Re:Bear turns 10, and it still feels like day one on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:41PM (#50355276)
I have been using Bear daily for 7 years and it is indispensable for me.

Maybe you have perfect memory, but I have found it critical for my job.

I thought it was clear it ran through iCloud: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT209460

It only works between devices signed in with the same Apple ID

I would love to have some examples, have you got any? Or is it just a feeling you have, that justifies your personal preferences?
"no good reason", except the performance, battery life & build quality?

Different people have different needs, preferences & ideological beliefs to you. If you measure the actions of others, based on your viewpoint alone, you will never understand the rest of humanity.

I think you will find the downvotes aren't envy, but incredulity that you think $600k is anything but wealthy.

https://dqydj.com/average-median-top-household-income-percen...

What is considered a middle class income?

In 2022, middle class encompasses household income from $35,090.50 to $140,362.00. This measure of middle class uses the range from half of median household income to twice the median household income.

“Cool, but”

Wow, did you actually watch the video, and understand what was accomplished?

The technical expertise shown in this project is extremely impressive, and you are getting hung up on the title not living up to your interpretation of it.

And how will they know when the "useful info" is simply false?

Ignore the depressed, aggressive (sorry, "assertive") antics, the fact it can confidently assert false information is the true danger here. People don't read beyond the headline as it is, they aren't going to check the references (that themselves are sometimes non-existent!)

Re:How a CPU works: Bare metal C on my RISC-V toy CPU on Thursday January 26, 2023 @07:27PM (#34540883)
I have been building a CPU using: https://github.com/hneemann/Digital

Much faster than Logisim, UI a little clunky, but my CPU runs around 0.5Mhz and it has very nice peripherals like Telnet, graphics ram, VGA etc

Terrible name that is hard to google, but great tool.

Agreed, losing InfoSec Twitter will really sting

Cooking can be enjoyable and relaxing for some of us. Something to take pride from.

How rewarding it is to see someone genuinely enjoy something you made.

Re:Billionaires Build on Sunday December 06, 2020 @10:57PM (#25329197)
I don’t think we should make claims based only on what seems apparent to us.

That isn’t a good path to finding the truth. It only exposes hidden biases and assumptions.

> Consider - the children of musical prodigies are likely to be more musical then average

Is that true though? You made a big claim, without backing, to support your other claim.

Checking in from Sydney here, summer is still a month away, my family is snuggled on the lounge under blankets right now.

The result comes down to a competent government response to a public health crisis. Not the weather.

Re:AWS IAM is having issues again on Thursday September 17, 2020 @05:01AM (#24502513)
Noticed something odd today I think is connected to this.

The other day we started using Access Advisor, and we found some of our KMS key policies with a Principal of '*'.

It wasn't marked as globally open, so we planned to fix them a little later.

This morning we found that status had changed.

While we were in the wrong to begin with, it was a little surprising to find the interpretation of the key policy changing overnight.

Of course it became our top priority and is now fixed. Something to look out for...

Re:Netflix boss: Remote working has negative effects on Tuesday September 08, 2020 @04:31PM (#24412968)
Why does the title exclude “Netflix boss” that is on the original?

Excluding it gives a false impression this is something more than a self interested opinion.

Our government, like a lot of our citizens, are racist. (The government is also beholden to the mining industry...)

Our PM today claimed we didn't have slavery here (in response to the BLM marches).

Narrator: Australia did have slavery...

I don't know the answer to that, but keep in mind that Apple is control of the entire CPU design. They could for example put an x86 decoder in front of the ARM cores.

After all, modern Intel processors decode x86 to a simpler instruction set used internally anyway.

Re:New 13-inch MacBook Pro on Monday May 04, 2020 @09:50PM (#23075523)
I hope one day you grow as a person, and realise different people have different requirements, preferences and trade-offs.

I value macOS, I work away from a desk more often than on one, and my past Mac computers have lasted for longer than any other commodity desktop or laptop.

I'm currently replacing a perfectly functional 2011 MBP, and only because I have some bonus money, otherwise it would have gone another couple years without issue.

Re:Google Pixel Buds on Tuesday April 28, 2020 @04:11AM (#23004767)
Radiation? What radiation are you talking about? The non-ionising Bluetooth? The radiating sound waves?

What about the (again, non-ionising) EMF coming from the cords in your wired headphones?

Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

Re:Making S3 More Resilient Using Lambda Edge on Tuesday December 17, 2019 @02:03AM (#21811344)
I disagree.

A single region can go down (and has in the past), no matter how reliable S3 as a whole is. If your business wants to avoid downtime, this is a simple solution to further reduce risks that cause downtime.

Just because other sites might go down, doesn't mean you have to accept it for your own.

Agreed. Each to their own, but I am tired of seeing JP recommended because I watched one Joe Rohan video once. I click not interested on each JP video, but still get recommendations. It is quite frustrating.
My apologies, didn’t meant to assume you didn’t. I guess I should have stated how I can empathise with the author, as I can spend a lot of time perfecting something longer like a blog, but a twitter thread is incremental without the option to go back and edit.
Ah, so I take it you don’t have ADHD then? Tinkering is something you can lose touch with time on. Writing brings with it self doubt, worry about how it will be read.

I send very clear emails (or so my colleagues tell me), but each one takes forever to write.

Re:Robots are not very good at picking strawberries yet on Wednesday March 21, 2018 @02:02AM (#16635860)
I find it amazing that with all the progress around us every day, people still think there is an impossible line automation can’t cross, and that their job is safe.

Even as a programmer, I imagine a lot of coding work being at the minimum offset by automation.

Re:Ask HN: Great science fiction movies? on Tuesday January 09, 2018 @06:13AM (#16105216)
A great movie, and come to think of it, I haven’t watched it in a few years. Thanks for the reminder!
No, savant simply means "a learned person". Perhaps you are thinking of "idiot savant", which refers to someone with a mental disability and is gifted in a particular way.
What does autism have to do with it?
Re:Most Software Dev Jobs Are Bullshit Jobs on Friday December 08, 2017 @02:03PM (#15881025)
Maybe just less hours in total at a desk (aka work)? I think that was the point she was trying to make.
Sorry, I’m not sure, this stuff largely goes over my head. I just understand the basics.

If I had to guess, I wouldn’t be surprised if a different exploit is found that bypasses the bios setting to compliment this one.
