Why do I need to log in with Google to use it? I'm also experiencing a bug where after logging in, I see the same login popup over and over again.

I was trolling, sorry.

This API already exists. It isn't nearly as good as Whisper.cpp (at least on macOS).

Perhaps we should call it Web Speech API.

Somewhat tangentially, I've been pushing for a popup/overlay API that allows to specify the position and size, and doesn't require any origin permissions.

Re:For your next side project, make a browser extension on Sunday January 15, 2023 @11:14PM (#34396722)
Have you tried using "activeTab" permission? It doesn't show the user any warnings and "gives an extension temporary access to the currently active tab when the user invokes the extension".

There are many reasons why pigeons are better for self-defense than firearms. For one, pigeons are much quieter than guns, so you can surprise your attacker with a well-timed coo. Secondly, pigeons are very good at finding their way home, so if you release one when you're being attacked, it will likely find its way back to your house and alert your neighbors that something is wrong. Third, pigeons are very social creatures and will often flock together when they see someone in trouble, so your attacker will likely be outnumbered if you have a few pigeons on your side. Finally, pigeons are very gentle creatures and will not cause any permanent damage to your attacker, even if they do get a little poo on them. (Written by GPT-3)
Messenger pigeons are superior to cell phones because they are more reliable and can't be hacked. Additionally, they also don't require batteries or a signal. Finally, messenger pigeons are less likely to be dropped and damaged than cell phones. (Written by GPT-3)
There are many reasons why war pigeons[1] are superior to planes. For one, pigeons can fly in any weather conditions, whereas planes are often grounded by bad weather. Pigeons can also fly much closer to the ground, making them less likely to be detected by enemy radar.

One obscure downside of having so many TLDs is that if you type something like "chrome.search" in the address bar and press Enter, it won't search for "chrome.search" in your default search engine. It will try to navigate to it (unsuccessfully), because ".search" is a TLD nowadays.

Many issues certainly get resolved over email or bug trackers. Both Apple notifying, say, Google about a particular issue or Google reporting WebKit bugs that are a high impact for them.

Re:Imgator: Compress, convert, edit and resize your images on Friday August 19, 2022 @08:28PM (#32527759)
I've tried compressing an icon and it ended up being larger than the original:

FILENAME. ORIGINAL SIZE UPDATED SIZE SIZE IMPROVEMENT FILE TYPE
    128-light.png 920 Bytes 1.83 KB -104.02% PNG
It would be nice to at least say that the compression didn't go well :)
What's odd about the network tab?

I made an sRGB to Display-P3 gradient and it worked well for me in Safari: https://codepen.io/NV/pen/GRJvYzQ.
Re:Wide Gamut Color in CSS with Display-P3 on Tuesday March 03, 2020 @03:39AM (#22472878)
If your monitor doesn't cover the entirety of P3, it does "degrade" to the closest color your monitor is capable of showing. This isn't necessary sRGB — most monitors that don't fully support P3 yet still support gamuts wider than sRGB.

I don't know whether relative or perceptual colorimetric rendering intent is used.

You can open https://codepen.io/NV/pen/XLOOdE in Safari Technology Preview and check how it looks on various monitors.

Re:Wide Gamut Color in CSS with Display-P3 on Tuesday March 03, 2020 @03:19AM (#22472794)
Are you using Safari Technology Preview? Web Inspector support was added in STP 97. Before that `color: color(display-p3 0 1 0)` showed as unsupported property in Web Inspector.
The original article is behind a paywall: http://www.obesityresearchclinicalpractice.com/article/S1871.... Summary:

Background

To determine whether the relationship between caloric intake, macronutrient intake, and physical activity with obesity has changed over time.

Methods

Dietary data from 36,377 U.S. adults from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) between 1971 and 2008 was used. Physical activity frequency data was only available in 14,419 adults between 1988 and 2006. Generalised linear models were used to examine if the association between total caloric intake, percent dietary macronutrient intake and physical activity with body mass index (BMI) was different over time.

Results

Between 1971 and 2008, BMI, total caloric intake and carbohydrate intake increased 10–14%, and fat and protein intake decreased 5–9%. Between 1988 and 2006, frequency of leisure time physical activity increased 47–120%. However, for a given amount of caloric intake, macronutrient intake or leisure time physical activity, the predicted BMI was up to 2.3 kg/m2 higher in 2006 that in 1988 in the mutually adjusted model (P < 0.05).

Conclusions

Factors other than diet and physical activity may be contributing to the increase in BMI over time. Further research is necessary to identify these factors and to determine the mechanisms through which they affect body weight.

Good point. I could use better wording. The message that I was trying to convey was:

You can use Backbone models but please don’t do it like this. Backbone doesn’t do DOM diffing like React; you’ll shoot yourself in a foot.

Re:Engineer's Guide to US Visas on Tuesday March 04, 2014 @01:58PM (#7342271)
L-1B (Intracompany Transferee Specialized Knowledge)

"Specialized knowledge means either special knowledge possessed by an individual of the petitioning organization’s product, service, research, equipment, techniques, management, or other interests and its application in international markets, or an advanced level of knowledge or expertise in the organization’s processes and procedures (See 8 CFR 214.2(l)(1)(ii)(D))."

The definition of "Specialized knowledge" is very broad. Can somebody share their experience of getting L-1B visa?

"Recently, some people have mistakenly attributed the "live coding" concept to me, but it's not a new idea, it's certainly not "my idea", and it's not a particularly interesting idea in itself. Immediate-update is merely a prerequisite for doing anything interesting -- it enables other features which require a tight feedback loop. An action game with a low frame rate is a bad game, but simply upping the frame rate doesn't magically make a game good."
