Databricks is a furnace. It burns money.
Yeah, you phrased it better. I am really frustrated these days. The (more accurate) statement I should made is: "The only people who can afford devices like this are smart enough to question the value."
Who can afford this shit?
Removing their fake job postings is low on the priority list. Same with the other companies and their fake job postings...
I had the same thing happen. Twice, actually - after the non-competes expired for the first acquisition, of course I accepted a position working for the same guy at the next company. Another successful exit there. These were small time, meat and potatoes type startup companies. Nothing fancy. The one thing I did post about here on HN, which I think was one 1) ahead of its time, 2) lacked investor connections, 3) we went with Oakland instead of SF DID flame out spectacularly. My part was the money from the first acquisition plus about 40% of my savings. Ah well. Gotta try it a few times. (still looking for the next opportunity)
*Deloitte CYPRESS falsified documents... After Arthur Anderson went down for global issues, Deloitte split into country based things so when Deloitte Cypress has an issue they can hand wave away it being an issue regarding Deloitte in that country only.
It somewhat operates that way, too. Back when the little company I was at was acquired by Deloitte USA - I was exposed to some of the IT workings. Deloitte Canada did things their way, USA did things their way... no knowledge sharing, combined efforts, learnings/failings passing between the "different companies". Worst of both worlds. For tax and risk reasons.
Mine is in a blue case. My last case was black. Only when my cases wear out do I remember that my phone is actually white.
I joined a company using Notes back in '00. Performed the 4 to 5 upgrade, skipped 6 and went to 7.
We had our "email blast" code in the founder of the companies mail database. When we launched new features or had various announcements, you would log on to Mark's email database and run those features in the drop down. Of course there were various permissions in check that only certain people could do (or view) certain things in the database, but that's where it ended up...
I always thought the data/design replication was cool as well. I had to bake in what I called "relational fields" into the documents to be able to perform some standard relational database type of work, but it was really easy to work with overall. Maybe too easy - as one person mentioned in the thread, there were hundreds of little custom apps built by anyone/everyone in the company, because it was just that easy.
Words will never be a human, for what it's worth. May as well delete that code path, as it'll never be reached.
This is my favorite soap, by far, for what it’s worth. The peppermint one, in fact. ALL ONE!
From what I can tell, gaming with an nvidia card on Linux is still rough. Is that incorrect?
Man, everyone is demonstrably bad - until they aren't. Some things, like being CEO, are much more rare in the "try, try, try again" space, but it does seem to work like most things. My son was a terrible, demonstrably bad hitter for ~2 years. Then, all of a sudden, he was not, nor will he ever be again.
The company I work for is about 15mm into what is effectively a rewrite. Just a lone data point…
Leadership asks us if we have friends who are skilled looking for a change. We do. We hire those people. They do great work. They then get laid off 8 months later. Leadership then asks (the few we have…) skilled people in India if they have friends who are skilled looking for a change. They say to find the job postings for the laid off people to use verbatim for the India roles.
Maybe we should start a support group.
I think about quitting every single day. I have too many little responsibilities running around the house in order to pull it off. Layoffs impacting us big time. Brain drain. Off shoring. 7,000 line PRs. 12 hour shift coverage. Project count tripling. Not sure how long I’ll make it before I have heart issues and become one of those late 40s guys who keels over and is forgotten by the company in 6 weeks. Stressful.
I think this is a reasonable compromise. Let's face it - they could have made this a $100 game (or even more) and many people would have bought it. I would have bought it. I'm not sure if it needs to go to Neo-Geo game costs ($200+?) but Rockstar has earned enough of my trust to buy in.
That said, I think I've bought GTA5 two or three times for various platforms over the years. I doubt we'll see GTA6 on sale for years.
As they say in the automotive industry, buy once, cry once. (Pay more for the known good thing, rather than buying the cheap third party things... I'm looking at you, $30 clockspringexperts.com that I have replaced 3 times in the past 4 years... instead of buying the $300 toyota part once)
$200 oil change?! I pay $85 for a 5.7L V8 with a 7.5 quart capacity. Who is paying $200???
While there are some interesting design choices for things like the lights and wheels (across all Hyundai models, IMHO) the Hyundai EV9 is a pretty normal looking SUV.
The same video showed up on my feed last week. I didn't try wall staring, but I did try a day (last Tuesday) with only a single screen active for the entire work day. I was extremely productive that day... but, and I know this is bad, I don't want set expectations too high. So here I type to you on a screen / device that should be turned off.
Everyone is linking the stuff they use, so I will add as well. I like the ambient/electronic as well, but this one might be new/exciting for some of you.

This is an extended edition of "it might just be a one shot deal" from the waka/jawaka album by Frank Zappa. The extended part is the pedal steel played by Sneaky Pete Kleinow.
If you have never heard any Zappa stuff and this is interesting to you, listen to waka jawaka itself if you like instrumentals. If you want something more commercial, listen to the Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation album. If you want more odd, listen to the Bongo Fury album, featuring Captain Beefheart. Happy exploring.
Really. I wonder if there are any historical videos about it. I have stories, but they are mostly exploit stories…
This past week I found and fixed a bug that happens once in 40,000 transactions working with Claude Code - Opus 4.6. Our legacy app was designed around 2008 and has had zillions of band aids added since then. Nobody (~700 person company) has been able to reliably reproduce this issue to confidently claim that they know what the cause is and how to definitively fix it. That all changed yesterday. I spent today writing up summaries that were shared far and wide. My wizard status is yet again renewed.
Well, it was kind of the only game in town. Sure, you had Dark Sun Online and Meridian 59, but in 96/97 you were playing UO if you liked the idea of online worlds.
I think the barrier to entry is the equivalent of several complete, fun, balanced single player games operating together in balanced harmony. Not impossible, but highly improbable.
At what European tax rate will China and India work on reducing their CO2 emissions?
I, too, am waiting to execute my master plan to import a 70 series Land Cruiser. Late 90s/early 00s model. It's almost time. Last car I'll ever need to buy.
I feel you. I’m 46 and now on the hunt for the right company to work for, and hopefully finish out my career there. While the company values haven’t technically changed, the actions taken in the past 5 years have eroded my trust so much I barely recognize the place. When you no longer have a sense of pride working somewhere, it’s time to move on. At least that is what I believe to be true.
I think JD Vance has plenty of charisma.
