Re:Protip for salary seekers: H1-B filings are public on Wednesday April 13, 2011 @10:23PM (#2445268)
Right, but they publish the salaries of all employees. If they published the salaries of just the out-of-state workers, we have a similar scenario.

I wish they didn't disclose both the company name and the title since some companies create a title just for one person. It takes no effort to figure out who's making what, myself included -_-

Open data / Gov 2.0 and that whole spiel is great but it'd be nice if privacy was given a second thought, even if it's the data of non-citizens

Re:Ask HN: Chicago-Area Startups on Friday April 08, 2011 @11:24AM (#2424162)
For those of you that have startups in Chicago, where do you normally hang out? Is there a HN meetup or something along those lines?
Re:Ask HN: Chicago-Area Startups on Friday April 08, 2011 @11:15AM (#2424118)
I've been wondering the same thing. It's hard to find/meet Hackers in Chicago unless you're already working at a startup.

Perhaps we need a meetup in Chicago that is similar to 106 Miles...

Re:Will QR Codes Gain Mass Adoption? on Friday April 08, 2011 @09:52AM (#2423756)
With Google resigning their QR code initiative and the break through developments in near field communication (NFC), mass adoption seems unlikely.

The QR graphics aren't aesthetically pleasing - proximity based devices are more likely to succeed.

Re:Why Can't Developers Estimate Time? on Friday April 08, 2011 @09:47AM (#2423733)
You don't know the problems/limitations you will run into until you begin working on your project. We have immersed ourselves in a culture where it's expected to estimate the unknown.
Re:Ask HN: I quit my job .. now what? on Friday April 08, 2011 @09:44AM (#2423719)
You could always try creating a high-level roadmap for yourself. However, unlike your previous jobs, this roadmap would be more of a guideline than a detailed point-to-point execution plan.

I'm trying to learn more about RoR and it's ecosystem by modifying the twitter example to be a neighborhood social network using GMaps, etc. It's a WIP with no effort put into the front-end yet ( http://neckowoods.heroku.com )

It seems that a lot of folks have attempted to capture this space without anyone being dominant. If you'd like to help out with whatever, let me know :)
