MoonWalk

Wasn't there another AI-coded suite posted on here in the last couple of weeks? It had a huge number of media-related apps, an editor, maybe a 3-D thing and numerous others. I can't find it.

"Pair it with HomePod for the best surround sound setup we’ve ever offered, and it makes managing your Apple Home accessories easier than ever."

That makes absolutely no sense. How does connecting surround speakers help one "manage" his thermostat or lighting system?

But still nice to hear. Really timely, too, since my 83-year-old mom called me the other day to help her E-mail a document she prepared in LibreOffice. I installed it on her (seldom-used) computer years ago. So I talked her through E-mailing it with Thunderbird.

And I say "talked," because the jagoffs at Microsoft REMOVED Remote Assistance from every version of Windows used by people who are likely to need it. And MS Office is trash; the more people abandon it the better.

If I can get my mom on Linux... hey now!

It never ends. So much of my day is wasted on Windows's defects and clumsiness.

"more than anything it was the incessant push to associate my OS account with an online Microsoft account"

Absolutely. Obnoxious and unacceptable. Then there's the fact that Windows has regressed into a clinic on UI incompetence and defective design.

I put Mint on my 2014 27" Intel iMac and it's slick.

Re:Get your Windows license refund on Friday August 28, 2026 @01:26PM (#49481773)
Site blocked as "not secure."

Oh well.

To be fair, iTunes suffered from the same defect at one point. Microsoft is now a clinic on defective design, execution, and attitude. But back then it wasn't that bad.

The iTunes case was also a classis UI 101 blunder combined with stupidity. If there was no iPod plugged in, the "Sync on connection" toggle in iTunes simply disappeared. First of all, when something is inapplicable, you grey it out. You don't just make it disappear.

But in this case, even greying it out would have committed the same blunder, because the default state for this behavior was YES.

So if the hard drive in your computer went bad and you installed the OS fresh on a new one, thinking that all your music was backed up on your iPod, you were right... until you plugged it in.

So, so dumb.

And finally: Apple never addressed the lack of "computer overwrites mobile" and "mobile overwrites computer," which Palm OS syncing nailed in the '90s.

Yep. Your time is FREEEEE!
Paywalled garbage, even if you waste your time "signing up."
Re:Darktable on Monday August 03, 2026 @04:02PM (#49160701)
Did they specify why?

The lack of good open-source image browsers has, oddly enough, become a major problem. Only recently did someone float a pretty good one for Mac (FlowVision). I don't know what options there are on other OSes at the moment.

Re:Darktable on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @08:23PM (#49104769)
You are in good company. I went into Darktable enthusiastically and with willingness to learn its workflow.

What I found was crippling bugs and a piss-poor UI. I've even gone back to it after a few years to see if I'd soften my stance, but nope: It blows.

Part of my beef with it is discussed below; people are acknowledging that it sucks at organizing (and, I submit, browsing). But it purports to do it, so you waste time wrestling with its ineptitude.

Re:Darktable on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @08:21PM (#49104757)
Is what?
Agree. I see it as informative to newcomers as to what they should do themselves.

This is how people learn.

Re:Robotics development made dead simple (open source) on Tuesday July 28, 2026 @07:31PM (#49091428)
Why is this garbage on the front page?
This demonstrates why forcing people to use E-mail addresses as user IDs is a stupid, stupid policy.

Thanks. I thought V8 was the runtime.
Re:TypeScript 7 on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @03:48PM (#48836585)
I was wondering how this kind of change makes its way into environments like Deno. I'm building a project on Deno too.

As I understand it, Deno provides the "language server" for editors like VS Code. So how does Deno use this... whatever it is from Microsoft? What exactly did they deliver here?

Re:Astro 7.0 on Tuesday July 07, 2026 @06:40PM (#48825007)
I don't understand what this is, based on this statement:

"Astro supports every major UI framework. Bring your existing components and take advantage of Astro's optimized client build performance."

But isn't Astro a framework itself? And then apparently you need Node as well. The frameworks upon frameworks in Web development are baffling.

Re:Show HN: Davit, a Apple Containers UI on Tuesday July 07, 2026 @06:10PM (#48824658)
I don't know a lot about containers. Would containers created for/with this also work in Docker?

Good name for this app, BTW.

Re:Immich v3.0.0 Released on Thursday July 02, 2026 @07:37PM (#48768801)
This is a good point. I'd rather have something with the S3 option, so I can serve the pages from my house but the images from a speedier source.

And a Delete key. I DETEST keyboards that lack Delete keys.

WTF, Apple?

Mmmm, not a membrane keyboard. This is a membrane keyboard: https://www.the-liberator.net/site-files/retro-games/hardwar...

I agree, if they needed YouTube to show a list of defunct ice cream flavors.

Because someone saw fit to downvote it.

For some reason it's fashionable on HN to promote douchily obscure posts, and condemn those who call for better.

If you hadn't brought that up, I would have.

Sony should not be let off the hook for its offensive (essentially criminal) behavior.

I won't even review Sony's decades-long efforts to undermine industry standards...

Re:The Unbearable Cheapness of Open Weight Models on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @06:02PM (#48739830)
Thanks for the reply. I've been programming professionally since the '90s (no background in ML or neural networks and whatnot), and I realize that the weights are numbers. So I was asking whether different weight sets can be applied to a model at will.

I'm really just trying to get a handle on the different layers so I can set up an environment and put it to work for limited coding assistance. For my purposes, I think an all-local setup is the best way for me to learn and should be enough for the coding tasks I have in mind. Mainly I want to automate tedious tasks away, like "modify these Swift classes' members and JSON deserialization routines to match what's coming out of my server API."

Thanks for the link! Reading it right now... and yes, this looks great. Appreciate it.

Re:The Unbearable Cheapness of Open Weight Models on Thursday June 25, 2026 @04:43PM (#48678949)
So you can apply different weights to those "non-open" models?

Also, I've read a bunch of descriptions of AI components, but none of them has said what the weights are applied to in the model. I guess that every model contains a dictionary of words and phrases, and the weights map relationships between them?

All the descriptions simply talk about weights being applied to "input," but neglect to say what that input is compared to. If a user submits a query, are the words in the query weighed against the words in the model?

Can you recommend a primer on this whole process?

And "analysts" flip out on the stock, when these products are < 15% of Apple's revenue. Clowns.

iPad: $28.02 B — 6.73% of total revenue
