If the consumers had criticality they’d be people, not consumers, and we wouldn’t have marketing the way we do now.

I’m with you on that, I understand I may have come across as bitter in my earlier comment.

What worries me still is the push to more AI as a response even while AI is a main driver for jobs being cut, and it taking a more and more central place in both the establishment (expected) and the revolution (unexpected and unwanted).

I, for one, do not welcome our new AI/SI overlords.

Re:OccupySaaS on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:36AM (#50335535)
It upsets me somewhat that they’re protesting things like lock-in only after being laid off, while beforehand they were the ones implementing them.

I do like the paradox (oxymoron?) of being made redundant with AI, so they’re using AI to render their former companies redundant.

But in the end it pushes for more AI software; I’m not sure who wins.

I don’t get why this was downvoted: it conveys a personal experience on the subject, and I for one enjoyed reading it; perhaps I’m missing something?
> That would be insane.

The phrase is "that would be good for the economy".

It’s still the notion of trickle down economics at play.

But they did get a 3.5% return on their investment (but not comparable to the equivalent return in the market or even in bonds for the same duration).

That return was in turn used to justify the bailout, but the global macro effects weren’t accounted for: the banks’ fuckup caused misery all over the world for the best part of a decade.

Wild guess: I suppose in Iceland the banks weren’t buying the politicians.

OpenBSD also has an Emacs-y non-extensible editor, mg(1):

https://man.openbsd.org/mg

Just noting for completeness, as I didn’t catch any mention of it.

I see you’re using Latin characters...

Yep, whenever you find yourself being the smartest person in the room, you need to find yourself a smarter room.

That’s somewhat worrisome.

I stand corrected then, I’ll return to it!

Same; either put in the work to think it through and show us your thought process and conclusions, or just post your prompts and call it a day and everyone gets to move on.

Following the rename we can now call them Xits, the x being pronounced as in Chinese ('sh').

There’s a lot of xit-posting on X, after all.

That one’s down to gravity, glass flows down very slowly over long periods.
> but they will be counted against you in performance evaluations.

That was my initial thought: he may get his exemption from use, but TFA doesn’t indicate that he will be evaluated differently during performance review.

To go one step further, would such allowances have to be accompanied by different performance standards, like oral exams for students with dyslexia also have increased time limits?

Or would the allowances be granted for the duration of employment, the latter being shortened due to performance problems?

And it’s good that they do.

No cash means no freedom.

Re:Leap second to be scrapped from 2017 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:01AM (#50131262)
Typo in title, its proposed for 2027 instead of 2017.
Yeah “I” is doing a lot of work there.

E.g.: I painted the Mona Lisa.

“I” meaning “I with the help of a JPEG on a computer and a color printer”.

There some worker would be forced to triage for twenty rupees a day in compensation, and some boss would profit from the recycling revenue.
The top reply there goes right for the gut:

"Rebranding surveillance capitalism as ethically driven is one of the more cynical takes I've seen".

Black Mirror has unwittingly been offering a lot of nice, horrible ideas.
Cyber ransom or LLM heist? Perhaps a combo.
Re:Poetry book that Anthropic tried to censor on Saturday September 05, 2026 @11:26AM (#49577461)
TFA’s description of how the author had to debate this with the AI was fun.

Back in the day, your OCR would just OCR things. Now it has opinions, and you have to fight to convince it.

Re:Python: The Optimization Ladder on Saturday March 14, 2026 @12:01PM (#47378005)
I got the same sense, but nowadays I can't be sure whether a text is AI or the writer's style has absorbed LLM tropes.
> Physical businesses have liability if they provide age restricted items to children.

Ok, suppose the strip club is the website, and the club's door is the OS.

Would you fine the door's manufacturer for teens getting into the strip club?

> but something only the full terminal can do what you need it to do

There's always `M-x term` for a full terminal.

> 4. Is it just me?

It's not just you.

I've been on HN since about 2008, and the change is steep.

Since the site acquired social clout, status seekers have swarmed in vying for status, and an opinion orthodoxy has formed that's becoming increasingly intolerant.

Pity, but it's a natural progression.

Whoever needs more slop faster can easily find it elsewhere, if PostmarketOS doesn't want to follow the trend, that's well and good.
> Alternatively they might build specialized branded hardware which people could only use for what corps allow them to do for nice monthly fee.

That's why I'm still holding on to a bulky Core 2 Duo Management Engine-free Fujitsu workstation, for when personal computing finally goes underground again.
