This is a strange comment when the biggest problem plaguing video games is microtransactions. I still don't get how Valve gets a pass on having some of the most psychotic and exploitative microtransactions in the world, but I'm supposed to be mad at Xbox for thinking about adding ads.
Hacker News is already in the business of policing articles though. This is a curated list of articles that people share, and a lot of unrelated articles are automatically deleted or just downvoted out of existence. This isnt Reddit.
It’s okay to have an opinionated website. Not every corner of the internet needs to be a bastion of free speech
I think the pipeline is not really about the 30u30 list as a whole, but about the cover of the magazine, which I feel has had a very high rate of fraud.
AWS has existed for like 2 decades now, is that not enough evidence for you?
You can turn on Private Browsing, even on a free account. It also prevents YOU from seeing who viewed you, though, unless you buy premium.
This is also assuming that 100% of layoffs are American citizens. A huge chunk of those layoffs are H1B workers themselves.
There are maps of Toronto
You’re gonna replace your 13/15inch laptop with a 6inch phone screen?
This is about KMart Australia. Australia is a country, similar to the United States. You should look it up sometime.
They separate each other by spending money on YouTube ads and sponsorships and jacking up prices to offer 50%, no 70% no NINETY PERCENT DISCOUNT if you subscribe for 17 years using my promo code MisterSandman!
That doesn’t make sense, the 15pro and 16pro were already titanium, and they moved AWAY from titanium for those phones in the 17pro.
I don’t disagree that it has something to do with supply chain, but it’s not the titanium cases.
React is significantly more easier to hire for than JQuery is, especially in this market. Especially if you’re looking for more junior roles.
As a new grad, I would’ve picked a react job over a JQuery job even if the JQuery one paid me 10k more.
Europe is also somewhat poorer than North America, to be fair.
Can we stop calling things you find weird “American?” Like Jesus Christ, Europe isn’t some special land where everyone makes food from scratch and capitalism doesn’t exist.
I’m not even American, but are we seriously judging people for baking cakes using cake mixes? It’s been around for almost a century. I highly doubt that cake mixes aren’t just as common in Europe than they are in the US within a margin of error.
> This was a hardware event.
So was last year’s, technically, but that didn’t stop apple from making it all about AI.
This is not just an unfounded theory but a completely insane theory. Many (all?) of the countries ahead of the US in test scores also don’t “beat their kids” because that is absolutely fucking insane.
It’s such an American thing, to blame something on a lack of violence.
I think what ICE is doing is bad, but I do feel a bit annoyed with how the media is reporting this. They WERE misusing the B1 Visa a bit - at least that’s what the facts point to, and that’s the only reason they are sending workers back to Korea.
I understand why they did this (H1B is painful and a B1 visa may have been the only way to get people to train American factory workers), but it’s not like they were completely innocent. South Koreans were still treated with a lot more respect and dignity than almost any other ethnicity has been.
I understand you made the app because of your own needs as a someone in a co parenting situation, but you’d have a lot more luck by removing that from your pitch. I see on your website you’ve mentioned friends or roommates which is a much bigger market.
The service itself sounds very useful, Splitwise is good but requires all parties to use and respect the app
I don’t see why it would. Chess is still bigger than ever.
It still is, not all queries trigger web search, and it takes more tokens and time to do research. ChatGPT will confidently give me outdated information, and unless I know it’s wrong and ask it to research, it wouldn’t know it is wrong. Having a more recent knowledge base can be very useful (for example, knowing who the president is without looking it up, making references to newer node versions instead of old ones)
There is no strong competition, there’s probably 4 or 5 companies around the world that have the capacity to actually have data centres big enough to serve traffic at scale. The rest are just wrappers.
I never said any of those things, you’re literally arguing with made up points I didn’t make?
But my point Hetzner isn’t self-hosted. Similar to how storing money in a bank isn’t self-banking. Self-hosting means you host your content yourself in a server room that you have physical access to. Hetzner isn’t that.
And that’s fine, self-hosting is pretty silly for most use cases nowadays. And all of the positives you mentioned are true. But I hate how we’ve turned “self-hosting” into a political dog-whistle for hosting with companies that seem more trustworthy than the big guys. And there’s nothing wrong with not wanting to trust GCP or Azure - just don’t call it self hosting.
And I hate to say it, but in this context, Musk would’ve been at least a little useful in having around. I’m aware he’s not the best person to make reliable predictions, but he does run SpaceX.
With both the cuts to NASA and Musk leaving the core inner circle of Trump, space exploration is going to be set back. Mars ain’t happening in our lifetimes, IMO.
I hope I’m wrong.
Payment systems are significantly more robust than taking a picture of an ID to prove you’re you.
I’m guessing you’ve never been to SF? The quality of housing in SF is really poor, with most affordable homes being decades behind in renovations and upkeep. This requirement adds unnecessary costs in an already overheated market.
Why do you claim that Hetzner won’t screw you over with your data?
What you’re doing with Hetzner is just a few less layers of abstraction compared to AWS or Azure. They can still theoretically take down the machine or steal your data, if they wanted to.
I don’t know what the correct definition of self hosted is, but there is a big ideological difference between what you’re doing and self-hosting actual, physical hardware in your home.
“May be things have changed over the last few years?” Have you been living under a rock? Macs before M series and after M series are essentially two different products.
If you’re just going to throw personal anecdotes around, I had an absolutely awful time with Linux Mint on my Thinkpad. Okular corrupted multiple PDFs that I was annotating for university and the open source communist was downright hostile when I asked for help. Keeping discord up to date was a pain, and I would have my entire desktop environment crash often.
Linux Mint used to crash way, WAY more than MacOS ever has for me, and I’d imagine that’s true for most people (for example, look at Linus Tech Tips when they tried Linux vs MacOS)
And listen, I still love Linux, but there’s a reason why so many tech companies through MacBooks at their engineers. It may not “just work” all the time, but it’s definitely more stable than using Linux or Windows.
I guess the argument has time goes on AI will get cheaper and more efficient.
…but idk how true that, I think it’s pretty clear that these companies are using the Uber model to attract customers, and the fact that they’re already increasing prices or throttling is kind of insane.
Quebec housing is not affordable by any means, but still much more affordable than the rest of Canada. Especially when you look at cities like Montreal and compare it to other cities like Toronto.
It’s not just affordability, it’s one big piece but it’s not the only thing.
As much as I’d like to agree with this, India was literally in the trenches of its own civil war and independence movement AND impacted by the world wars AND figuring itself out as a new country in the early 50s.
Yet Indian middle class was still very distinctly one-income driven.
