Re:The AI Boom May Be Sowing Seeds of Another Financial Crisis on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @04:49PM (#50358678)
May? I'm pretty sure there's a crisis coming one way or the other, but the crash happens only when they fail to make God In A Box.
They bought their tickets. I say let 'em crash! Those apes are likely gone.

Slide 12. Pretty much yeah. https://indico.cern.ch/event/1541024/attachments/3055157/540...

You can kind of isolate the different vibrational modes and their corresponding energy transmission. "Phonons" are basically sound waves (the particle analogue), labeled in figure 2: https://www.nist.gov/system/files/documents/2019/07/12/dcs_2...

Re:Reinventing the Pencil Sharpener [video] on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:56PM (#50250005)
Plenty of people have the resources to set up a workshop, but they don't bother. We should celebrate these weirdos (positively valenced) who make the world a little better.

If you work a good 9-5 you've got several hours each day to tinker. Also, nothing in that video was 100k+. A nice watchmaker's lathe is ~10k. A full CNC enabled Bridgeport mill is 12k. That shop could be assembled with care for ~20k, or carelessly for ~50k. It's not nothing, but it's less than a boat. It's less than a country club membership. It's less than a few trips to Disney World.

The training corpus of pre-LLM writing is like iron from before the development of nuclear weapons
Re:Diamond Transistor on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:39PM (#50247750)
It is a very good thermal conductor, but not the best. At low temperatures, copper is better. At very low temperatures, helium is much better.

Superfluid helium's maximum thermal conductivity is roughly 100x diamond's maximum!

Rubber bullets are supposed to be aimed at the ground, but we've seen (pun sadly intended) plenty of officers aiming at faces/eyes of protestors. This can kill, and if it doesn't kill it maims.

They're trained to not maim or kill. More training won't fix it. More money and more resources won't fix that systemic rot.

40%, after all.

Yes, that's exactly why I mentioned Clickspring's project in this thread about Stone Age archaeology :)
If you've never watched Clickspring's Youtube videos you're in for a treat.

He has a long-running series where he works to make a new Antikythera mechanism using ancient (bronze age) technologies. He's a master machinist, so he has fabulous insight into workholding, precision, etc. https://www.youtube.com/show/VLPLZioPDnFPNsHnyxfygxA0to4RXv4...

His skeleton clock build is one of my favorite pieces of internet content ever, up there with Bartoz's gorgeous webpages: https://ciechanow.ski/cameras-and-lenses/

Re:The designer lamps in my house on Monday October 05, 2026 @04:46PM (#49970449)
I deeply regret not buying another suitcase to import a Tolomeo from Germany to the USA a year ago.
We can walk and chew gum at the same time. Charge the criminal action, fine the bad actors to help make injured parties whole, and regulate the technology to protect against future harms.

These guys will tell you their industry is more dangerous than nuclear power, and we regulate the living shit out of nuclear power. If you think models can't be regulated, look up the export controls on MCNP and tell me how that's different.

A fool's errand. "the market can remain irrational a lot longer than you can remain solvent."

Re:Norway Eyes Partial Ban of Smart Glasses on Monday October 05, 2026 @04:21PM (#49970132)
Smart glasses that were clearly designed and visible were odious and shunned, so Meta (et al) have developed covert designs instead.

It's the same as a buttonhole camera used for spying. The differentiator (vs a phone or SLR or similar) is that its primary function is concealed.

In a normal world? Close to 100%. But we're not in a normal world so the probability of a government intervention is high.
Re:QR Codes That Route to the Appropriate App Store on Thursday October 01, 2026 @11:35AM (#49923084)
But you see how that sucks, right?
At least those guys had the horse sense to understand the importance of giving something back to the public. The Carnegie libraries are a marvel.

Their contemporary equivalents seem to be interested in speedrunning a revolution that ends badly for everyone.

They're also not controlled by pesky local regulators who are worried about losing elections. By putting them in space it becomes a federal/national defense project, and those regulators are either out of work or compromised or complicit.
Re:Toyota is finally taking its best-seller electric on Friday September 25, 2026 @01:02PM (#49847131)
Dems have long lost dealership owners. Those owners are a powerful lobby, but they're not popular... not many people enjoy the process of buying a car and getting it serviced.
You would think, right?
Re:QR Codes That Route to the Appropriate App Store on Thursday September 24, 2026 @12:56PM (#49833489)
I hate QR codes. I don't trust them.
Re:Coulomb's law remains tricky to test at home on Thursday September 24, 2026 @11:51AM (#49832425)
It's probably easier to verify Gauss's Law, which then gives you Coulomb's law for free.

Direct verification of inverse square laws is hard! For electromagnetic interactions (ie Coulomb's law) you can use scattering. If you want to do a static experiment (Coulomb's Law the hard way or gravity) you probably need a torsion pendulum experiment. AFAIK the best in the world at that are at UW in the Eöt-Wash group: https://www.npl.washington.edu/eotwash/torsion-balances

Re:Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @02:42PM (#49820575)
You absolutely can. Read up on the French nuclear reactor fleet!

https://worksinprogress.co/issue/liberte-egalite-radioactivi...

There are minor variances locally, but you can make enough components common to benefit massively from economies of scale.

> early, powerful ranged weapon

Indeed, we've largely missed the point of the "David and Goliath" story. David rolled up to a sword fight with a handgun.

Re:ExactTex. A gradually-typed superset of LaTeX on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @02:19AM (#49606177)
Have you seen Finding Forrester? It's a lot easier to write once you've got a frame and a few sentences you don't like on the page!

It's great to use these tools to give you more time to be a human, but the ReadMe is for humans, and is dramatically improved by being set in your voice. The problem is that when your project description looks like the result of a solid twenty minute prompt session it woefully undersells the rest of the project.

It might be cool! I might bother to learn it! But I'm not going to care more than you about it.

Re:ExactTex. A gradually-typed superset of LaTeX on Saturday September 05, 2026 @01:07AM (#49573243)
You can tell it's slop because of the way that it is.

The heading "The type system is gradual, and that is the whole design" is a dead giveaway.

Actually the whole "How young this is" section reads very LLM-y. Claude, I think? It's funny that LLMs have more distinctive authorial voices than so many people.

Re:ChatGPT ad targeting is garbage on Thursday September 03, 2026 @03:30PM (#49555430)
Well as an economic solipsist, I do believe the world has been built and operated fully for my convenience and entertainment
Re:ChatGPT ad targeting is garbage on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @11:55PM (#49545760)
But I won't. From the deepest depths of my heart and my soul, I will not and I will never return something I bought for a competitor's product because I was served an ad.

It's not a positive signal, because for the lifespan of that product I just bought, I have removed myself from the addressable market.
