Did you consider to rewrite your joke in rust?
Re:Gaming on Linux has never been more approachable on Thursday November 20, 2025 @01:34AM (#45989615)
About two months ago, I switched from Windows to Chrome OS, and I haven't missed Windows at all. The only thing that needed some adjustment was my audio setup. I have virtual channels for the system, music, chat, and games. These are then mapped to my Rodecaster Pro II. With Pipewire, this setup was not too difficult and works reliably. Gaming works perfectly fine. The only application I miss is ShareX for taking screenshots. I still use my old Windows PC for gaming with anti-cheat software via Moonlight and Sunshine, and it works perfectly.
I must say this is the biggest issue for me too. A upgrade path for the device (like framework provides for its laptops) is the biggest missing feature for me.
But is it worth it if we create more electronic waste because of it? I somewhat like the idea of the activation lock system, because it makes the devices unattractive for stealing it. On the other hand it creates more unnecessary waste (at least they way Apple implemented it).

A way to unlock them should be provided. Report the serial to apple, they try to inform the owner by mail and/or push and after a 30 days grace period it should be unlocked. Another benefit of such a system is that it might even help to locate stolen devices.

Thanks for the awesome DIY version of the air quality monitoring solution. Due to this nice guide I already built 3 of the basic sensors and I just purchased one pro to support your cause.
Re:Mercedes-Benz to introduce acceleration subscription fee on Saturday November 26, 2022 @10:53AM (#33753613)
Google Drive/DropBox and OneDrive has continued costs for the hosting provider and for this reason a subscription makes complete sense.

IntelliJ IDEA can be bought as a perpetual license [1] and the subscription just gives you access to the latest version.

The increased acceleration would make sense if it was a one time payment but as a subscription its nonsense. Mercedes has no costs for it after they produced the car.

I did play Forza Horizon 4 on the PC with a Xbox Series X controller and it worked fine. But had bad experience if I tried to use an PlayStation 4 controller. Which controller did you use?

But for Forza Horizon 5 I do play it on a Xbox Series X and currently prefer it for two reason: 1.) Its just works without any major issues (a friend of mine has on the PC currently constant crashes) 2.) My PC hardware can run the game but not pretty well

One big benefit I see on the Xbox side is that you can play the games on your PC too. And I hope that "exlusives" die as its just annoying.

But in short if you just want to play games a console might be less friction compared to a PC. No need to fiddle with graphics settings and so on.

Re:Fire declared in OVH SBG2 datacentre building on Wednesday March 10, 2021 @08:15AM (#26410870)
I had my server in SBG2 and sadly the backup failed since the end of january. Yep it is my mistake for not checking the backups. Now I lost about 1 month of data.

The only good thing is that my backup was offsite.

Does OVH offer automatic snapshots for VPS? I know Hetzner does it for 20% addidation of the cost of the server. If they do the next question would be if they are destroyed too?

Nice another website where you can't reject the tracking cookies. If you follow the link to "customize cookie settings" it only tells you to disable the cookies completely.
Where I live in Austria they charge just 45€ for a PCR test and the antibody test is free.

And I've seen it for the first time. I think it's beneficial if it gets reposted (as long as there is sufficient time in between) as it will reach more readers.

Through the short lifetime of entries on the first page, only a small part of HN readers will likely see it.

Re:AMD PSB Vendor Locks EPYC CPUs for Enhanced Security at a Cost on Wednesday September 09, 2020 @05:17AM (#24419008)
But how often does a server gets stolen from a data center?

It surely makes sense for phones as it makes less profitable to steal them (as you could only sell parts of the phone and even that can be blocked). Maybe even for laptops but not for desktops and servers.

But aren't these subsidized with tax payer money?
Re:The modern HTTPS world has no place for old web servers on Wednesday May 13, 2020 @06:15AM (#23165347)
I would say depending on the traffic a raspberry pi should suffice?

I'm currently using the DNS challenge of Lets Encrypt for something similar. My setup is a VM running docker with multiple sites. I just setup a DNS record (it only points to the IP of the VM which is a private (eg 192.168...) one) and setup traefik as the reverse proxy with the DNS challenge. Works really well except that my router blocked the DNS record at first.
I've used it ages ago. Some youtubers read them and made response videos out of them (Q/A).

But later some of them disable it as the only got a flood of messages through it.
