Wow! Amazon and Walmart have captured 80% of online retail sales in India.
Modern colonialism.
Re:Functional programming design patterns (2015) [video]

I wish I could find videos of people actually writing complex functional programming code. These talks seem to just reiterate the same things and all example code is too simple for me to be able to visualize using it in our code base to the extreme that they are talking about

Wouldn't be more effective to target parts of their economy that hurts they're most vulnerable members of society and spread from there? They could potentially start a mainland revolt really forcing their hand.

Well that's kind of dramatically different than how the press is portraying it.

This is simultaneously really cool and really sad.

It sounds like the removal of the vial was done on-site for somewhat reasonable reasons, but in the future they ought to have a temporary structure erected during removal so that if something happens, the dust doesn't get blown and tracked everywhere. Doing this in a shipping container would have avoided all of these problems and most of the exposure to people as well.
Re:A Rogue Raspberry Pi Let Hackers Into JPL Network

The articles says if the hackers were some jokers on the internet then the data isn’t terribly useful, but if it was an adversarial nation then it is very useful. Why? Can’t the jokers sell it to other nations?

I remember watching one of those emergency room shows years back. Three guys go in for swelling in the brain, due to the rat worm.
Their conditions got worse, until they administered immunosuppressants, as the doctors assumed that their immune system was reacting to the dead worms.
Apparently when they die in a hosts brain, they release antigens. Toxic I think.

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that the label’s metadata is always present and accurate. Labels have been screwing artists for over a century.
Re:Unity Editor for Linux

Well the question is if Blizzard ports Hearthstone to Linux as a “hey, we have a beta for you guys”, and bring some buzz. The annoying part is the battle.net launcher.
Re:Why Carbon Credits for Forest Preservation May Be Worse Than Nothing
on Friday May 31, 2019 @06:19AM (#20059620)
As Verchot says, REDD-mechanism was designed to offset deforestation and it is not designed to work as a carbon credit system. Both are important but maybe they should be kept separate. Money can be collected from consumers who want to compensate their use of products or services which use fossil raw materials. Follow-up should be rigorous and if money is wasted, it should be paid back.
Re:How Qualcomm shook down the cell phone industry for almost 20 years
on Friday May 31, 2019 @06:17AM (#20059611)
America is rife with de facto monopolies and duopolies. That is our version of capitalism which champions competition but its all talk with little walk. That the government would pick on Qualcomm is a mystery to me. Its lobbyists must not have paid off the right people.

"PayPal really doesn't care that the world's most popular browser no longer displays the EV visual indicator."
Funny story - I was about to rant that yeah, it probably wasn't by design because Paypal still as of 2019 didn't offer 2FA which, for a payment company, was quite disturbing...
well, turns out I was wrong, they now do. I just hadn't checked in a while, and of course received no email about it when they did turn it on... or maybe just missed it. Typically something you should advertise on each login if it's not activated, but hey, who cares, it's just money after all.
