Re:Ask HN: Hotel API's on Saturday September 18, 2010 @12:00PM (#1704383)
You'd be better off contacting them first, before clicking on the join button. These affiliate programmes expect to see an established service - allowing them to decide if the service is appropriate for their brand and product - after all, it's marketing people who handle this sort of stuff.

Not sure if you are aware of this, but the hotel and hostel business is dominated by a small number of B2B providers who you have probably never heard of. Ironically, I can't remember their names off-hand, but if you are serious, then consider approaching them in the long term.

Re:"50% of firm founders [in Silicon Valley] are foreign born" on Friday September 17, 2010 @04:40PM (#1702763)
I'd imagine immigrants aren't so laden with debt, so they have more freedom. Many countries don't charge their native students for higher education, those that do, are often subsidised and repayments are linked to their earnings. So if you earn a small salary, you pay nothing.
Re:Poll: How many hours do you sleep per day? on Friday September 17, 2010 @01:12PM (#1701893)
It depends on whether you work full time, part time, working for yourself or doing nothing. I imagine full time people try to maximise their spare time, so reduce their sleeping time and effectively turn into zombies.
Re:Google Fights Back In Battle For Talent on Wednesday September 15, 2010 @07:46AM (#1693956)
By repeatedly covering this topic, and websites like this linking to the source, it's becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Essentially, TC is partly to blame and it reminds me of when they went after last.fm.
Re:Google Fights Back In Battle For Talent on Wednesday September 15, 2010 @07:28AM (#1693929)
Employers often ask questions like that when people hand in their notice - in order to persuade them to stay.

And in any case, it is silly to keep your salary secret - that is how employers exert their control over employees.

Re:Ask HN: Why is there no competitor to the iPod Touch? on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @03:18PM (#1691890)
Yeah, Archos is the main company I can think of, at least in Europe. They pretty much pioneered the portable MP3 player market years before Apple. Archos' main problem is they like to control everything and aren't that good at finishing/refining their software, which is why the whole Rockbox scene started and produced amazing firmware for the early players.
Re:Third world America: The decline of a superpower? on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @03:05PM (#1691827)
That suggests his successors weren't very good at finishing the job he started. It's only natural for governments to become more and more corrupt as decades pass. When someone like that appears on the scene and reboots the system, their work should be acknowledged and refined before the corruption kicks in again.
Re:Narcissism: Gen Y's Most Perilous Trait? on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @01:03PM (#1691278)
Wish writers wouldn't group people by those arbitrary generation labels.
Re:How to get a job at Google, interview questions & process on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @12:16PM (#1691078)
Whenever I read about these interviews, I get the impression that they are designed for recruiting students - that is, they are loaded with theory and don't test experience.
Re:Move to SF and hate it? on Monday September 13, 2010 @10:40PM (#1689208)
London is so well integrated that there's little reason to use a taxi. That's why you have to call to book one, because most people use them for unusual trips, such as going to the airport with a lot of luggage, attending an event with formal wear etc. Much cheaper and quicker to use the tube.
Re:Move to SF and hate it? on Monday September 13, 2010 @03:16PM (#1687829)
When reading about a city on Wikipedia etc, I can never tell how frequent public transport is, and whether it's good outside tourist areas. So thanks whackojacko and _corbett for your views.
Re:World’s Most Cramped Airline Seat to Launch Next Week on Monday September 13, 2010 @02:32PM (#1687658)
My only real problem with Ryanair is no one wants to compete with them. They are a bit like a virus. Once fully established in an airport, their competitors scale down and move away. Worse still, if they decide to move on themselves because the airport starts charging normal rates, that airport is then in a poor position.
Re:World’s Most Cramped Airline Seat to Launch Next Week on Monday September 13, 2010 @02:21PM (#1687599)
An alternative option would be to cram the economy class into a smaller space, so they can have more space for premium economy, business and first class seats. That would be useful for routes between London and New York where there's a big demand for business class seats.
Re:Move to SF and hate it? on Monday September 13, 2010 @12:30PM (#1687084)
What about people who moved from European countries, did you enjoy it? Just something I have considered, but wasn't sure. Like how does the infrastructure compare, such as public transport?
Re:Poll: Sequel or S-Q-L? on Monday September 13, 2010 @12:17PM (#1687030)
Never met anyone in real life that says sequel, well, except when referring to Microsoft products - perhaps a US thing?

Another weird one I noticed is some people pronounce GIF as jiff, rather than giff.

Re:PHP On Pie takes a fresh new approach. on Sunday September 12, 2010 @08:27AM (#1683533)
I would prefer to see something of more substance, like a feature comparison table with other frameworks.
If you wrote your own framework then you could grab an area of the code like a database layer, caching system, template system. If you built code on top of an existing framework then that's more difficult, because it's higher level, more abstract and spread out.
Re:Google Images Instant (inspired by Youtube Instant) on Saturday September 11, 2010 @04:33PM (#1682294)
Sorry to pick on this one, but are these posts going to keep appearing on Hacker News until every Google service is covered?
Apple wants to be a niche player - where they can control the margins. Android's strength and weakness is that it's a commodity OS, which means phone manufacturers are falling over themselves to do their own model because it's easy and profitable. Yet many, are also continuing to work on their own high end proprietary alternatives for the long term.
Re:Godaddy.com up for sale. Could fetch $1 Billion on Saturday September 11, 2010 @12:11AM (#1680972)
There will also be a transaction fee from their payment processor and there's discount codes.
Re:Godaddy.com up for sale. Could fetch $1 Billion on Friday September 10, 2010 @11:39PM (#1680948)
By bombarding customers with page upon page of cross selling options.
I don't think many people realise that using an internet service is like stepping onto private land. So, they then don't realise that rules on hate, copyright etc. apply to them while using the service.
Re:Digg v4's Problems are not Technical on Wednesday September 08, 2010 @10:14PM (#1674179)
One of the aspects not mentioned is that Digg was a tech website at the beginning. The quality of the audience, and subsequently, the quality of the content, decreased as they opened the flood gates to other categories.

It seems like their only option was to either stagnate with an increasingly unappealing demographic, or reinvent themselves.

Re:How Apple Plays the Pricing Game on Tuesday September 07, 2010 @09:04AM (#1668761)
I guess a lot of that is taxes then, I picked UK and a few other EU country prices.
Re:Interesting TED Videos on Tuesday September 07, 2010 @08:53AM (#1668735)
I realise he has a load of fans etc, but Gary Vaynerchuk would be better respected if he didn't swear so much, it is such a lazy thing to do.
Re:How Apple Plays the Pricing Game on Monday September 06, 2010 @08:53PM (#1667720)
In other countries where unlocked phones are regularly sold, the retail price for an iPhone 4 is roughly between $1,200 and $1,400.
Re:Scaling the BBC iPlayer to handle demand on Sunday September 05, 2010 @03:00PM (#1664954)
That's what I was thinking. Ruby, Perl and Python are all fine alternatives if you can find people with those skills.
Re:U.S. jobless rate hints at permanent structural change on Sunday September 05, 2010 @08:06AM (#1664389)
Perhaps the biggest opportunity the UK had was when regional parliaments were proposed for England, that would have made the central government less influential and let locals focus on their main concerns. It was poorly implemented but an interesting first step if the public had gone for it.
Re:U.S. jobless rate hints at permanent structural change on Sunday September 05, 2010 @07:28AM (#1664359)
The Labour/Tory thing isn't that simple. The UK's economy is strongly focused on London. When the Tories (conservatives) are in power, most of the money goes to the South East and the rest of the country suffers really badly. When Labour are in power, they attempt to spread that wealth to the outskirts, but they aren't good at doing it, so waste a lot. They are polar opposites, each creating their own long term damage, especially to public services.
Re:Like.fm is how Apple Ping should work on Saturday September 04, 2010 @06:45PM (#1663579)
I'm just glad Spotify has last.fm scrobbling built in.
