LightG

You need to be accurate.

There's a lefty-rightist, Stanlist conspiracy going on here on HN, and you're at the very centre of it.

On the contrary, I would argue the urge to move beyond conventional language norms is what gave us Shakespeare and his numerous additions to the language.

I can taste the zest for life by moving beyond the boundaries of Trumpian idiots.

It's like seeing a nothingburger and fries on your plate telling the Maitre d to take it away and serve us a wonderful new dish.

There's a key difference here. You are not me and I am not you.

Think things through before you use your experience in relation to others.

Must be a left-wing conspiracy.

Time to gather your militia. You've clearly been wronged and your freedoms are under threat.

You need to take this very, very seriously.

As intended. Glad you picked up on that. Well done. You're sharp.
I would say you are a rabid Stalinist in need of rapid correcting.
I don't doubt that you are right. I assume it is an Americanism. However, I repeat the n=1. The first time I heard it was from Eric. My point stands.
The first time I heard the phrase 'nothing burger' was from the mouth of Eric Trump. It's possibly time to upgrade your vocabularly. I mean, Eric is a verified idiot and I can't help but think of you as being one by association. Apologies if that is in inaccurate.
Re:ChatGPT Can't Kill Anything Worth Preserving on Friday January 13, 2023 @12:03PM (#34370567)
I don't mind AI killing off anything and everything, as long it goes hand in hand with producing the means for those whose jobs are killed off to survive and thrive.

I want my warm, sunny hill where I can discuss philosophy if I so choose with some bread wine, after which I'll play old arcade games and then work on a classic car, after which I'll make love to my wife.

Can you ask chatGPT if it can arrange for that, please?

"Luxury?" LOL

The only thing approaching luxury is the price.

No need, I just read the newspapers if I want some of that.

I hope ChatGPT is put to better use.

Great idea.
Re:A UK Minister Photoshopped the ex-PM from a rocket mission on Tuesday January 10, 2023 @09:34AM (#34325412)
My country is an international embarassment.

Someone make it stop.

Please.

That's one better than my personal best: 'change the green colour to yellow'.
Not really. You can say the same about about both sides. I prefer buttons and touchscreen. See the ioniq 5 for a good example of this implementation.

Tesla seem to be trying to Steve Jobs / iphone the car experience, and I absolutely don't want that.

And if having a different opinion to you means I'm of the hivemind, then so be it (frankly a ridiculous comment, but anyway).

Depends. I recently got a request to 'polish' some work up.

The definition involved making a document look 'professional' or 'corporate'. No update to the actual quality and clarity of the information.

Complete waste of time and brain cycles.

The request was from a venture cap (natch).

Re:Software horror show: SAP Concur on Saturday January 07, 2023 @07:45AM (#34287553)
OMG sorry this is so relevant ... we've just been dealing with a client with SAP software that is supposed to automate on-boarding suppliers/customers.

It takes 2 people client side to hand hold third-parties through the labyrynth, and 1 person at the third party to desperately go back and forth to those 2 people to check if everything is ok and to answer questions about why things aren't progressing.

Literal facepalm.

Have had the same experience with two other clients recently. What is going on with SAP?

Re:Why Not Mars on Monday January 02, 2023 @09:03AM (#34217895)
A "colony" on Mars is going to be about as extensive as the ISS for at least 100 years.

Or have you bought into Elon's nonsense?

The funny thing is, I work in finance and see these decisions up close.

The owners explaining their decisons to me while keeping a straight face.

Make no mistake, owners (no matter how progressive, with very few exceptions) will screw you over if it improves the bottom line or their remuneration.

It's one of the worst aspects of my role. Owners straight up lying to my face about why they do things.

Re:Young adults are struggling with their mental health on Saturday December 31, 2022 @06:32AM (#34195512)
BMX'S, taking the bus to school instead of being driven, getting into mischief on weekends, football with neighbours on the streets ...

Without RTFA, the headline makes sense ... I mean, look at the state of me (LOL).

Re:“Lying” by Sissela Bok: a summary and discussion on Friday December 30, 2022 @06:49AM (#34184190)
Because of the power dynamic. People are suckers for it.
Re:“Lying” by Sissela Bok: a summary and discussion on Friday December 30, 2022 @06:49AM (#34184186)
Agreed. That's because of the power dynamic. People are suckers for it.

If most of us regularly lie at work or with our partners, we get sacked.

"Because, it's been a tough year. We'll look to implement a bonus scheme next year which will help us keep up with inflation"

... and all that boll@cks.

Advice: either be in the 1%, or change jobs regularly enough to consistently boost salary ahead of inflation.

Yes, especially with this subject matter. Normally I hate, but in this case it works.
Re:Second Life on GitHub on Saturday December 24, 2022 @03:56PM (#34121016)
For any users, how active is it these days?

I dabbled with it many years ago and ... Christ, can it really be 20 years since release?!?!

Re:California passes law banning Tesla from calling software FSD on Saturday December 24, 2022 @10:35AM (#34117742)
Decades is the correct context in which to be talking about this.
Re:California passes law banning Tesla from calling software FSD on Saturday December 24, 2022 @10:29AM (#34117696)
Good. Back when I believed in Tesla and its owner, this excited me. But the more you look into it, the more you experience it, the more you know about it and its delays, it's clear we'll be lucky to have actual FSD in 10-20 years. I think even that's optimistic.

I'm glad this is being recognised at legislative level. Objective people on the ground have known this for at least 5 years ...

One regret is that, while Tesla have forged a place for EV's in the world market, the waste of talent and time spent on FSD (and competitors trying to immitate and catch up on the promise of FSD specifically) has been tragic. I can only hope the secondary outcomes of that time are worth it.

Honestly, decent auto stop-start in very slow traffic and excellent lane-holding cruise control would have been enough for me ... and that's been available for a decade.

Re:The year of the RSS reader (really) on Friday December 23, 2022 @10:47AM (#34107039)
Two RSS threads on HN frontpage today? Great! RSS never went away but I hope it becommes much more prominent again. The last lost decade of walled-garden social has been a relative disaster.
