Basically using AI the way we have used linters and other static analysis tools, rather than thinking it's magic and blindly accepting its output.

Re:Revolt: Open-Source Alternative to Discord on Thursday March 06, 2025 @01:02PM (#43283126)
Pushing what used to occur on web forums into Discord chats has been a net loss for the Internet.
"WebScript". Call it what it is (non-web uses notwithstanding).
Re:Apple Launches Apple Invites on Tuesday February 04, 2025 @06:11PM (#42940558)
As a big fan of Apple TV boxes and a medium fan of Apple TV+, I can't agree with this strongly enough. It's such an unforced error.

It's so unnecessary to call everything "Apple something" when they've had great success creating recognizable brand names like "iPod", "iPhone", and "Macintosh".

Calling it "Apple TV+" just feels like both the set-top box and the streaming service wanted the name "Apple TV" and neither side was budging.

Re:The VR Winter Continues on Tuesday July 16, 2024 @06:49PM (#40981051)
The fact that consumer VR remains a niche category even in its best use case - gaming - tells you everything you need to know about whether or not it's ready for development in the non-gaming consumer space.

Until VR tech is strong enough that it becomes a must-own product type for the average gamer, any other consumer-focused use case should be considered dead in the water.

Re:The demise of the mildly dynamic website (2022) on Wednesday June 19, 2024 @07:06PM (#40733342)
PHP deployment was indeed easy.

But it turns out "dump everything in docroot and let mod_php interpret and execute whatever it finds there" had security implications...

> In a statement, Wells Fargo said it “holds employees to the highest standards and does not tolerate unethical behaviour”.

Given the things Wells Fargo has been guilty of in the rather recent past, this reads like a punchline.

Have you stopped to think that maybe people will use this "experimental 3 month old language" for their personal stuff, and that not everything in programming is for your "whole team"?
Re:Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years on Friday April 26, 2024 @02:12PM (#40172431)

Sure, but the problem is when you have a community around that tool that insists otherwise.

There are two kinds of people who declare a crypto is going "to the moon":

- The ones who don't believe it, and sell off their inflated coins after the price jumps

- The ones who do believe it, and are the rubes the first group is counting on

> While the spacecraft can still receive and carry out commands transmitted from the mission team, a problem with that telecommunications unit means no science or engineering data from Voyager 1 is being returned to Earth.

A probe going further in space than any other that suddenly starts sending back incomprehensible science data is a pretty killer start to a sci-fi movie if you ask me.

Re:My Unhealthy Relationship with Keyboards ⌨ on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @01:13PM (#37677830)
I don't need a redundant set of numeric keys on the right side of the keyboard for the same reason I don't need a redundant set of vowels on the left side of the board.

For an accountant or someone whose keyboard usage is exceedingly numbers-centric, then sure. But as a default option, it's a space eating waste.

If company towns were to come back, it wouldn't be in one fell swoop. It would start with "good deals" like this...

Re:PHP-Tokio – Use any async Rust library from PHP on Monday August 28, 2023 @09:33AM (#37293696)
"Modern PHP" basically boils down to "backporting features from the languages/ecosystems that have since replaced PHP".

Which is a great and smart way to improve PHP for the people who still have to work in PHP. But none of it is original to PHP, or provides a compelling reason to use PHP instead of the options where all these things originally were copied from.

Re:The Future of the Vim Project on Thursday August 10, 2023 @01:44PM (#37079285)
> Let's see how much traction Vimscript9 will get. From the distant view of an outsider I got strong NIH vibes from that.

Honestly, that's what most recent Vim development in the Neovim era looks like to me.

Bram rejected async patches for years. Neovim gets made and proves out the demand for async. Vim suddenly is motivated to cook up their own, incompatible version of async.

When Neovim began, I thought the inevitable future was the Vim project cherry-picking the best features from Neovim each time such a feature reached sufficient maturity and popularity, and merging Neovim's implementations back into the core project. I underestimated how strong the NIH syndrome was with Vim proper.

Dolphin's Twitter account stated that cloud saves was part of the Steam release.

It really is one of the main reasons to do a Steam release. Seamlessly playing your savegames and save states on desktop PC over to Steam Deck and back again made RetroArch one of the killer Deck apps IMO.

Re:How the Streaming Era Turned Music into Sludge on Saturday April 22, 2023 @01:03AM (#35663486)
This just kinda feels like the author telling on themselves.

You won't have this problem when you listen to albums, not playlists.

If the music you're listening to isn't interesting enough to carry a full album, you're listening to low quality music.

A quick search of Steam reveals a long list of games that use the name Monster in their title even more prominently than Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals does.
