It's all so tiresome. It's like... Every time I see something funny, cool and new, there's a bureaucrat fighting to erase it from existence.

Re:Colorado wolf reintroduction to move forward on Wednesday December 27, 2023 @04:16AM (#38780360)
The voting map for this bill was hilarious; all of the districts that voted "yes" were in cities, all of the rural areas voted "no".

The city folk are voting to literally release wolves into the rural communities that voted against it.

Google discworld reading order, pick a storyline that is similar to genres you like (the guard books are copper fiction, the Lipwig books are inverted heist novels, the Rincewind books are classic fantasy by way of Oxford University culture, etc.)
Heinlein's law: Arguing that a given scifi author's view of future society makes sense will always essentially reduce to arguing that the author's politics are correct.
Re:Digging In: Why Don’t Americans Eat Mutton? on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @04:28AM (#37671761)
It's the name, IMO/IME. Mutton as a name is unappetising. "Mutt" brings dogs to mind, and the "un" sound at the end makes it sound lumpy and gross.

A lot of people don't even know that mutton is sheep, they'll say stuff like "I thought Lamb was sheep!" Etc

And before you dismiss this idea I would like to draw your attention to the multibillion dollar market that is marketing.

Reminds me somewhat of roman concrete; archeologists were under the impression that roman concrete was poorly mixed due to various hydroreactive additives, that were thought to have been accidentally added during the mixing process.

It turned out these additives grant self healing properties to the structure, as when cracks appear revealing the additives, they expand to fill the crack.

Glass houses etc. The site hosting the article is awful.
Re:Why Britain Doesn’t Build on Tuesday June 27, 2023 @04:10AM (#36490207)
It is an unearned windfall, but people deserve to keep their homes. It bears noting that the issue is caused by property investors, not homeowners. How about we go for the individuals that own more than 3 properties and let grandma keep what she earned?
Re:Why Britain Doesn’t Build on Tuesday June 27, 2023 @04:07AM (#36490179)
Tldr: Churchill was a good wartime leader, but during his second term he screwed up the housing regulations so bad it broke up one of the longest conservative runs of all time with Attlee coming in to try and fix the mess.
"Why is our population declining? Why aren't millennials reproducing?" Truly a mystery!
Japan is still a first world nation. The world hasn't ended for them. Can we stop pretending that having a population that isn't exponentially growing is a bad thing.

Not exactly a collapse, and a fall was always going to be the case; Brussels was always going to absolutely murder the first country to leave, as an example to the other states.

In my opinion good maths education is important for everyone, regardless of predilections. It's often a child's first introduction to objective logic.
From my memory what mainly lost his backing from the general public was the horrendous antics of Dianne Abbot and her place at the front bench of the labour government. Everything that woman said and did leeched coherence and unity from the shadow government.
Only a year? I thought they were going to deathgrip power until 2025

The only functional turing test will be either espousing hate speech or describing how to make a pipe bomb.

"human knowledge and perspectives not represented in this set could be systematically wiped from public discourse."

That's a feature, not a bug. With this technology "Dangerous misinformation" can be cleanly and easily removed from platforms with minimal human intervention. If you don't think that that's exactly what it'll be used for, you haven't been paying attention.

The basic prerogative of reproduction is predicated on the basic need for safe and secure territory.

The wealthiest oligarchs of the boomer generation have done everything they can to ensure the consequent generations are unable to attain that one entirely reasonable primal need.

Women's rights have had an affect on birth rates, yes, but I'd rather take away the oligarch's right to own all the single family homes than my girlfriend's right to decide what to do with her life.

My first thought as well. What's in it for them? Planning a pivot toward space based defence assets perhaps? How forward thinking.

Re:No one wants to have kids anymore on Tuesday December 06, 2022 @09:16AM (#33880107)
To translate it to a more common sentiment: "we'd like to have kids, but don't feel stable enough" or "we would have kids, but can't afford a house"
Re:Avoid Temptation on Tuesday December 06, 2022 @09:10AM (#33880011)
A good article that reiterates the importance of building positive habits to improve one's own life experience, over thinking that dramatic escape will change your life.

You can't be tempted by chocolate if you don't have chocolate in your house. Can't buy chocolate if you get into the habit of avoiding that aisle when shopping.

Also works in reverse: I recently started a new job within cycling distance, and by design my subconscious route to and from work takes me past the gym. It's easier to keep going to the gym when you're there anyway, every day.

Headlines on HN are getting steadily more cyberpunk and I'm here for it.
Re:Remote Work Is Gutting Downtowns, Will Cost Cities $453B on Tuesday December 06, 2022 @08:54AM (#33879726)
Good. Feel the "hand of the free market" at last throttling the antiquated obese market that is business property. As automation and communication improves, so should corporate policy restructure and reform into the most efficient system. Dragging people across the country every day and filling the air with burnt dinosaur just because the old people in power can't figure out how to adapt is pathetic. New management styles are needed that incentivise the timekeeping of results over the timekeeping of presence.

"Are we millennials so busy coming up with pronouns that we can't find a weekend to make copies of ourselves?"

Oh sod off with this. The primal prerogative of reproduction is predicated on the primal need for safe and secure territory.
