Re:Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:54AM (#50257778)
I still get Windows 11 BSOD. That definitely hasn't gone away!
> the fourth I have to take due to state apparatus' nagging and legal threats.

I get a letter every month from the licencing people, it just goes in the bin. I've had 1 visit, he asked to come in, I said no. That was basically the end of it.

(For the record, I have a TV but I currently have no way to watch live TV on it, so why should I have a licence! I don't use their service)

I was having a conversation with my dad about how if a virus had a 10% death rate it would be terrifying.

His reply was that 10% was nothing, that means you've got 90% chance to survive. Then said you've probably got a 10% chance of being hit by a bus every time you cross the road. Just absolutely no idea what probabilities are at all or ability to extrapolate probabilities from real world lived experience.

My main PC at home is 15 years old at this point, running linux. It's fine.

I don't play games, but it still chugs along perfectly fine and for what I use it for I rarely think that it's too slow.

Since when has it not ?

Re:Rethinking Database Programming on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @07:30AM (#49344137)
I dont see how this isn't just an ORM (like Entity Framework in dot net land).
I used to be on a forum with only half a dozen people, someone in the group hosted it. We wanted to share images so someone wrote and hosted a pubic file sharing site...

We never shared the link to the uploader publicly, yet within a couple of weeks the URL was out there somehow and he was getting all manners of horrific stuff uploaded to it, he had to close it down just to protect himself.

You've posted this to HN.

I wouldn't take this risk.

Re:Lisp moving Forth moving Lisp on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @07:03AM (#49095855)
Take C#, if you want a new language feature or syntax added you have to propose it to the language design team, they have to decide it's worth implementing then you have to wait on it being implemented and released and your tooling updated.

If I want some new syntax in a LISP, I just write a macro.

e.g. the following threading macro in clojure

(->> x foo bar)

Takes x and passes it as the last argument to foo, then the result of foo is passed as the last argument to bar. Alternative you have -> for passing it as the first argument. These are from the standard library, but if they weren't they would be trivial to write yourself.

And no strings involved when you write macros in lisp either. It's just lists, your macro is just building a list. Because the syntax is just lists and there's no difference between lists and the syntax.

How on earth is the ebook more expensive than the physical copy!
This!

All my experience in trying to hire developers has been wading through an endless stream of people who were just useless.

Me: I want to represent a 2d grid, what data structure should we use? Them: A string?

This was someone applying for senior engineer. Others I've had filled their CV with SQL related acronyms. But couldn't explain what a foreign key was and then stubbornly insisted that at their current corp they would never ever use foreign keys in their SQL database!

I've had senior engineer when asked how to check if we had a 2d array with an item at x,y tell me if anything is on the same column or row, they couldn't do it, couldn't even verbalise how to approach it.

"Web Developers" who didn't know the difference between GET and POST. Web Developers that have never heard of PUT or what it would be used for.

This awesome! I actually had no idea I could ssh into my Remarkable and do neat stuff like this!

> Why do it? It's so impractical!

Because you can and it's fun is always a perfectly valid answer here!

The Uncharted games are weird like this. They get lauded for their storyline, yet Drake is out their killing hordes of guys for what ? Some treasure ?
Re:SQL patterns I use to catch transaction fraud on Saturday May 16, 2026 @06:38AM (#48158892)
Yeah I was in a bar one night and was peckish, so tried to buy a packet of crisps. They said minimum spend on card was £5, so I said just charge me the £5 it's fine.

Card got blocked as they thought it was fraud. Annoying! And not something inebriated me wanted to deal with at 2am.

Ok. Maybe they protected me from myself, but still!

This is why at my current place we are not supposed to do any dev without an SME on the call. We do the development and share the screen and get immediate feedback as we are working in real time! It's great.

Re:Talking to 35 Strangers at the Gym on Tuesday May 05, 2026 @04:33AM (#48019609)
Man, I've been bouldering now at my gym for maybe 18 months and I can count on one hand the number of times I've spoken to someone.

A lot of people on their own have earbuds in too,and clearly don't want to be spoken to.

I had one time where I asked someone for some help, he then went and did the route and shrugged and said it's easy in a really condescending manner.

Re: on Friday May 01, 2026 @07:18AM (#47973450)
Was this a thing?

I never knew this!!

Man, pre big-internet was so hard to find information on games. I remember for the original tomb raider a friend needed a guide, so I wrote and printed out them a guide for the full game, since I played it pretty obsessively.

I love the clojure, but I think a big downside is not being able to use it at work and now work feels like I'm being forced to work with stone age tools in comparison. That gets quite depressing sometimes.

Sometimes I think I was happier before I learned Clojure.

Ignorance was bliss.

An example of me solving an Advent of Code with clojure and repl. You can see i never interact with the repl directly, I just send code to it via my editor and get results inline.

Re:The 49MB Web Page on Monday March 16, 2026 @02:53AM (#47395839)
Man, I probably say no to like 40% of the requests I get as a dev. Often we will come up with a better way of doing things by just spending 15-30 mins talking to the business about the actual problem they are having.

Some are just flat out refused as they are just too stupid and will cripple the system in some way.

Re:Nobody Gets Promoted for Simplicity on Wednesday March 04, 2026 @09:57AM (#47248419)
The point isnt to give a simple answer, even if it's a correct answer. The point is show how much you know and how smart you are.

The question is framed to you as a way for you to show you know x, y and z and talk about x, y and z.

Even if a valid solution is just do a, that's great. But the interviewer has no idea if you actually know about x ,y and z do they ?

Re:Windows Notepad App Remote Code Execution Vulnerability on Wednesday February 11, 2026 @06:32AM (#46973675)
As someone who would like to get a new PC (but a desktop) for coding, and is considering a mac, why would you never buy a mac for coding ?

I'm currently running Ubuntu on this ancient thing (which I love actually), but I absolutely don't want Windows.

Looks a bit like excalidraw. It's not, but it's pretty similar in look.

Re:Scott Adams has died on Wednesday January 14, 2026 @03:17AM (#46613597)
I've seen it in person once with a former coworker, everything created anxiety, everything was problematic, she spent her entire time looking for a reason to be offended (especially tenuously on behalf of someone else). It was exhausting trying to work with her. She took so much time off too, at very short notice, as she just couldn't cope with working that day.

I just want an adblocker and tree style vertical tabs, where the tab bar minimises when the mouse isn't over it.

That's literally my entire use case for using firefox.
