Re:88% of Americans use a second screen while watching TV on Thursday December 26, 2019 @06:04PM (#21887625)
For me it's not the noise, it's the conversation. Something about TV or YouTube tricks me into feeling like I'm around humans when I'm not.

This probably isn't healthy but it's the easy coping mechanism for the problem of not socializing enough.

Re:Ketamine Could Soon Be Used to Treat Suicidal Ideation on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @03:23PM (#19089418)
The last big batch was proven via test to be 30% caffeine by weight. I can't imagine people stopped cutting it.
Re:Ketamine Could Soon Be Used to Treat Suicidal Ideation on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @03:22PM (#19089410)
MXE does. So does 2-Fluorodeschloroketamine, deschloroketamine, and several others. The issue is once you step off the PCM chain you have hider chance of a side effect of mania.

MXE does have the same bladder issues, but is taken as a smaller dose so it takes longer to happen.

Re:Ketamine Could Soon Be Used to Treat Suicidal Ideation on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @03:18PM (#19089359)
Ketamine is heavily cut on the black market, both in crystal form and not.

What is harder to fake it vial ketamine. There is a significant cost to that.

Re:Ketamine Could Soon Be Used to Treat Suicidal Ideation on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @03:15PM (#19089320)
Insufflation is the word you're looking for.

That's also untrue. IM, and IV are most faster come offs then insufflation or eating it. Though eating ketamine sucks for the amount you need.

What is true about IV is you can control the amount that actually gets taken in much better.

Re:Ask HN: What awesome stuff have you come across lately? on Wednesday December 05, 2018 @11:35AM (#18609804)
That is a very cool thing to do.
Even of the ones who are, a lot of are turned off by the UI
It seems that most people are going:

- Twitter - Pillowfort - Wordpress - Mastodon

depends a lot on what the user was into posting.

I'm also seeing quite a few more people operating on multiple sites at once now, even SFW blogs. So they'll post Tumblr, Pillowfort, and Wordpress at the same time so their former users can still see them.

Re:Dark web dealers voluntarily ban deadly fentanyl on Saturday December 01, 2018 @04:11PM (#18578962)
I remember when this happened on Hansa because the dutch feds took it over.
Re:Dark web dealers voluntarily ban deadly fentanyl on Saturday December 01, 2018 @04:10PM (#18578955)
Fentanyl doses in micrograms I believe. A lot of addicts are addicted to the feeling of the injection and the ritual of it as well.

Heroin I believe doses in the tens of mgs, which is hard to measure precisely but can be weighed on a twenty dollar scale. You could distribute fent in the same way Lsd is on blotter paper. The big difference is you accidently get a hot spot of Lsd it's not fatal.

Many addicts aren't buying massive quantities at once either nor are they getting it from the internet.

It works with password managers like Lastpass.
Re:Domain hacks with unusual Unicode characters on Thursday November 01, 2018 @09:42PM (#18360060)
I've found it interesting which things do this vs don't.

Slack doesn't convert unicode urls, discord does for example.

Re:Overdose deaths have fallen for six months on Monday October 29, 2018 @07:49PM (#18332739)
I am not, you'd pass out before you got to a lethal dose. Especially with tolerance.

However China has been cracking down on it (and analogs like Deschloroketamine).

https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/vdxqk4/why-is-the-chinese...

And the list of people who died due to ketamine related things: https://erowid.org/chemicals/ketamine/ketamine_death.shtml

The latter is a rather predictable list of people dying while doing stupid things on ketamine and/or mixing it with depressants

Re:Emojis as a Language (simulation) on Thursday October 25, 2018 @07:24PM (#18305509)
I'm a little confused how this works. There seems to be one button and that's it. Clicking it does nothing.
Re:Overdose deaths have fallen for six months on Thursday October 25, 2018 @06:44PM (#18305263)
I agree with you on that bombs thing. Currently USPS mail is very underscreened. All (or almost all) drugs in the US and coming in use USPS mail due the fact they need a warrant to open your package.

They currently have greatly stepped up their screening game though, mostly due to fentanyl. But that doesn't mean you have to ship straight to the US in bulk. A common route for fake pressed xanax was alprazolam powder to canada where it was pressed and either reshipped or smuggled into the US.

Re:Overdose deaths have fallen for six months on Thursday October 25, 2018 @06:41PM (#18305247)
Your argument would work better if the EU wasn't also source for this sort of thing. Though the availability on that end has gone down due to a Russian lab being busted earlier this year that turned out to be behind two of the bigger source sites.
Re:Overdose deaths have fallen for six months on Thursday October 25, 2018 @06:39PM (#18305234)
I can't attest to street price.

At a certain point people just stop buying drugs unless they're heavily addicted. The thing about research chems is that the ones that tended to stick around dose in the sub 50mg range. The cost per dose is still low since they're produced in multikg batches, resold in fraction to multi gram increments.

Re:Overdose deaths have fallen for six months on Thursday October 25, 2018 @06:36PM (#18305212)
Not generally an overlap there. As far as I'm aware there's no real one stop shop. Darknet markets have never had escort services to my knowledge.
Re:Overdose deaths have fallen for six months on Thursday October 25, 2018 @06:36PM (#18305207)
No you're right but what it lead to it was sites like Reddit closing down things like /r/darknetmarkets, and /r/rcsources which are both review and sourcing subreddits. It made other forums scared to touch the idea of sourcing because the act can be used against any illegal activity.

Here's the announcement of Reddit banning said subs along with many others: https://www.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/863xcj/new_a...

Re:Overdose deaths have fallen for six months on Thursday October 25, 2018 @02:27PM (#18303279)
So something they briefly touch on is new research chemicals. What they don't mention is what happened earlier this year.

FOSTA has slaughtered many avenues of sourcing research chemicals. It is significantly more difficult to get them from a reliable source then it was this time last year. While this doesn't stop anyone sufficiently determined, it's harder to get a source of say fentanyl or U-47770 to cut with.

The US has been cracking down on producers of these in China, and many chinese or US based resellers have either ceased to exist or changed their operation (US seems to be heavily targeting opioids, China seems to be going after ketamine and analogs) . In addition the Darknet Markets have taken a big hit from Operation Bayonet. It's not to say that DNMs or their vendors or customers are gone, just they're finding it harder to regroup. Though there have been a number of high profile busts from the data of Operation Bayonet

This applies to more then just opioids though. Other drugs with overdose potential, like stimulants are just harder to get a hold of. Most US domestic sellers seem to focus on benzodiazepine analogs.

We'll see how long this lasts though, I doubt that whole scene is truly gone but it might just be in hibernation for a bit.

I like that you give a preview before making me sign up.
Stumble Upon really died when clickbate took over the world. It went from like maybe a few per stream of sites to pretty much nothing but listicals.
Re:Lambda School Announces $14M Series A Led by GV on Tuesday October 09, 2018 @08:11PM (#18180895)
I'm a Lambda school student. AMA

I'm in the FSW program but we're past that now. I've watched how people move in and out of the cohort I'm in.

I went in knowing how to make a basic website, a bit of sqlm and a bit of a few other of the topics covered. This put me ahead of about 60-70% of the cohort.

I have noticed students getting very hung up on the particular stack. It does seem that a few are just copying and pasting code to get it to work.

This was also the case when I went to college though.

What I don't see people mentioning is the effort their putting into improving the curriculum. It's a living thing unlike most college classes I've been in. They no longer teach Bootstrap for example (which was probably causing most students more trouble than it was worth).

I'm on average doing something coding related 8-10 hours a day now. Occasionally I take days off and go play Minecraft or something. I make about one extra project every two weeks the latest being ( https://whatisthecolorofthesky.netlify.com/ )

The people I see being the most successful are the ones who probably could have succeeded without Lambda. However I think a sense of direction, a constant source of help, and a sense of community accelerates the pace.

I don't know if I'm going to regret spending 7 months (plus whatever the job search takes) of my life doing this but hey it beats what I was doing before.

If you're curious what the class content looks like it's in my Github which is linked in my profile.

Re:Ask HN: What podcasts do you listen to regularly? on Wednesday September 26, 2018 @01:27PM (#18078245)
- The Dollop -- Comedic American History

- Omnnibus -- Pop culture minutiae with that guy who's good at Jeopardy

- Mission to Zyxx -- Improve scifi comedy

Occasionals/not currently airing: - Mystery Show -- solves a mystery they can't google while being very spunky

- Revisionist History -- Uses history to make a point

- Alice Isn't Dead -- Hard to describe. Best listened to in a car at night

- Darknet Diarier -- Old hacking stories

- Hardcore History -- Very long engaging history stories

I tend to put what I'm saying under the slides of a power point in the notes section.
Re:AMC Is Beating MoviePass at Its Own Game on Saturday September 15, 2018 @11:20PM (#17997154)
I actually ended up doing my first credit card chargeback on movie pass after the changes they announced at the beginning of August. I had canceled and there was one more month but then they announced the movie selection thing.

Suddenly when I went to look on a saturday no theater within 10 miles of me had a show time for anything they had selected.

Part of the reason I got it over Sinema is because moviepass worked at my local indie film theater. The moviepass selection would probably never include things I wanted to see.

Side note if that theater offered an unlimited pass I'd jump on it in a heart beat. Their screenings are never full and they tend to bring back older things I'd want to see. When the Ghost in the Shell live action came out they showed the original anime version for example.

Re:Whole Foods workers seek to unionize on Thursday September 06, 2018 @10:17PM (#17931417)
I worked there as a cashier.

You got tested on this.

Prime account is just the replacement for their rewards program. For the month of... may? The old one who stopped and the prime one hadn't started. This made some customers mad.

Plus it's a lot easier if you're basically running off a script to do the eight hours of repetition.

Re:11% of Americans don’t use the internet on Monday July 23, 2018 @06:59PM (#17596726)
My Grandfather is one of those 11%. However I suspect he's a bit different from the others. Up until the late 90s he was programming Fortran and COBOL. He started during the Korean War or just after I believe. Towards the end he was mostly doing contract work as one of the few people who could still work on them. But after he retired technology stopped for him. The latest innovation he'll use is a DVD player. The only reason he doesn't have a tube TV is it died five years ago and we got him a flat screen.

To be fair he may never have gotten used to using a GUI on a PC or the internet at large. But still, it's my grandmother who runs their email account and shared cellphone.

Re:How Reddit plans to make money through advertising on Friday July 06, 2018 @11:50AM (#17472396)
I was part of the digg to reddit user migration. The big difference this time around is there is no reddit to migrate too.

I was affected by that recent wave of subreddit bans and started looking at alternatives.

There's plenty but none are very good.

The biggest move I've seen is people going to Discord servers. The two problems with that are: -Searching and history aren't really a thing on them -Discord does not really have a good way to make money other than nitro.
