The data can still be sold to other municipalities. That’s kind of the problem here, handling this as anything other than a privacy violation, because anything else allows them to just lease private land to install them, then sell the data to whoever wants it. But the US has been anti privacy for a while now.

> You'd be taxing something you want citizens to have: wealth.

Disagree with the premise. I want people with less than $50m to have more wealth, and people with more than $50m to have less wealth.

I think that’s the underlying criticism. If the enterprise is risky, speculative, or just straight up bullshit, then selling the shovels is the smartest move.

A modest proposal, really.

Just have the agent rederive the revert, based on the facts of whatever made the change inappropriate.
You may not always be that rich, and having to liquidate your only house to pay the taxes is and should be an unpopular opinion.

Re:US Man Given Prison Sentence for Bot-Farming Music Streams on Thursday October 08, 2026 @07:58PM (#50014117)
Is it fraud for me to spawn a bunch of bots to listen to YOUR music? In fact, this has happened before, and people who are not involved at all get punished for the fraud that they didn’t commit. So it’s a quite tricky problem, and I agree that it just isn’t that straightforward.
Re:Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance' on Saturday October 03, 2026 @07:35PM (#49948865)
Do you think the people in the 1700s would have approved of having police follow everyone around at all times in public spaces, taking notes? I think it’s easy to imagine how they would feel in principle, even if they couldn’t imagine the specific technology.

The same way we hold dog owners and parents accountable, but I guess that doesn’t directly service capitalism, so is fine to regulate.
Can you just not use Reddit at all anymore without the app?
Haha, as if the constitution matters anymore.
With the current political climate, that might be tantamount to destruction of evidence or contempt, and be the worst of all options. The problem isn’t any particular technical thing, it’s that the US government has become authoritarian and fascist, there is no legal “gotcha” that will ultimately work here.

Kind of hard to feel sorry for the richest country in the world when they refuse to spend enough money to take care of their people enough to even meet basic national security standards.
Re:Asking Authors About Their Own Papers on Sunday September 20, 2026 @10:45AM (#49776386)
In academic settings, it’s also plagiarism to copy your own previous work. Given that, I’m not sure academia gets to take the high ground on what constitutes misconduct or not wrt to plagiarism, at least in the edge cases.

Outsourcing to cheaper locales is the unregulated free market at work. Why would the free market pay you more when I can pay less to someone else, for equivalent enough work? Because you’re an American? The unregulated market does not care about that factor. Manufacturing doesn’t pay enough to attract workers, if it did, this wouldn’t be a problem.

He went down my drain a long time ago for the same reason. I also find it funny how his good ole boy down south project to make a grill scrubber has basically just re-discovered what all the predominately atheist city slickers have been trying to tell the predominantly Republican voting south, which is that unregulated free market capitalism is the problem.
Re:Claude is no longer available for minors on Friday September 11, 2026 @08:41AM (#49657445)
You need licenses for a lot of things though, particularly for things where there is substantial harm to be done when done incorrectly. This is just how it goes as things get more popular. Think back to 1903, there was no FAA then, but also no need for one. But it would be super disingenuous to argue now that airspace should be totally unregulated.

I think the problem with this debate in general is that people aren’t recognizing the harm, and are clinging on to old ideas about how the world should work, ideas that just don’t acknowledge the reality of how things change as technology changes, or even just spreads. Rejecting the idea that there are harms, and thus nothing should be done, just ensures you don’t have a seat at the table at all when it comes to the inevitable decision to do the regulation.

I think if/when people start getting laid off across the board, in most industries, there will be a change in attitude. The trouble is, the poor folks who get laid off first, and have nothing in the meantime.
UBI paid for by a tax on token usage and an “employment” tax per robot.

You’re still free to have a job of some sort if you come up with one, but the UBI is enough to cover all your needs and plenty of basic wants.

I don’t see any other way to do it once the automation cat is out of the bag. Retraining is fine and all but if you have to retrain every 4 years after your last job was just automated away, then what? We can’t just leave people behind like that, but we also probably can’t stop the progress.

Not to mention you “opted in” by the terms and conditions of the service, which would certainly argue that if you didn’t agree to the terms, you didn’t have to use their website.
How about not on the street, but in a boat in international waters? Or, how about on the street, but they were believed to be carrying drugs?
I go out in public sometimes, but don’t want someone following me around live-streaming everything I do to twitch.

Yes, it can be done in full view in public, and still be an invasion of privacy. why do you think they’re called glassholes and pervert glasses?

Ok, let’s say I buy that. Why was Anthropic singled out?

Which notably, doesn’t affect money transfers in general, just ways that poor people transfer money, so the concern as stated is not in good faith at all, but rather a way to further punish migrant workers, primarily Mexicans, and is absolutely racial animosity.
And? This is the same argument the south made while supporting slavery. I’m not saying the two are equally bad, but this is just simply not a valid argument if you ignore the surrounding context.

Christians also invented pray the gay away and the Crusades. What’s your point? Hospitals surely would have been invented by secular people too, but not the crusades.
