Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:31PM (#50344080)
Weights are just data like any other data, and LLMs are really good at dealing with data. I'm really surprised anyone is surprised by this.

Then they'll quickly discover how bad cell coverage is in vast swathes of the USA and they'll have to be a lot more tolerant of bad customer sat scores and high return rates than they typically want to be.

Amazon/Whole Foods in our area seems consistently unable to pack bananas in a way that doesn't result in bruising. I'm beginning to think they train them to put heavy cans on top of bananas for some reason.
Re:OpenAI's agents talked to each other through the CPU Cache on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:22PM (#50291583)
To be clear, that's not a reason not to prosecute illegal hacking, and a future DOJ might have a different opinion. It would be good for their own well being if the AI companies started behaving accordingly, but they're all either cults or run by deranged billionaires who think they're above the law.
Yes, in aggregate -- the whole group, not cherry-picked individuals -- racial groups vote differently from each other. In 2024, if only Black people had voted, we'd have President Harris now. This is beyond dispute.
Yup. This is not okay. It should be illegal. Maybe it is, IANAL. This person didn't know whether she was getting arrested or kidnapped or why. On top of which this is unnecessary brutality on the face of it. This needs to stop.

> As she hits the sidewalk, Tan hears what she describes as “a godawful crack” come from her foot, and then realizes she’s being cuffed behind her back. “I’m being kidnapped and I have no idea who these men are,” Tan writes. She’s dragged to an unmarked SUV, thrown in the back, and claims to have heard one of the men say, “This could all have been avoided if you’d just come quietly.”

The Democratic base is way too angry for that to fly this time. If Jeffries tries it he'll be removed as speaker.
oh yeah? which attitudes do you take issue with?
you're excusing a cold blooded murder. what is wrong with you? what has happened to your sense of humanity? they executed him while he was no danger to them. that's murder, not law enforcement. there is no legitimate excuse for it.

say it with me:

In the USA, government agents are not allowed to kill people for protesting. they're not allowed to kill people for being a mouthy lesbian. they're not allowed to kill people for provoking them, insulting them, or making them mad.

They're not hard to find. It's happening; it's not as widespread as it could be if it's allowed to continue. Put this into google: "federal agents intimidating people for posting social media comments".
Re:Python's experimental JIT to be removed on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @06:25PM (#50266720)
Ruby is essentially Smalltalk (see also Objective-C).

I don't know Python's innards well enough to understand why it's so especially difficult in this regard, but I gather around the edges that its object model may not be as well founded.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @05:16PM (#50265929)
this is literally the status quo. have you looked at Asahi Linux?
Re:Ghostty 1.4.0 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @04:01PM (#50264956)
Really? Claude Code is buggy but not very demanding in terms of rendering -- are you sure the perf issues were local?

slightly off topic, but we need to be clear that certain harder drugs -- the ones most likely to kill you -- can absolutely change people

Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @08:38PM (#50253268)
Vonnegut's butthole isn't a good brand
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @08:37PM (#50253262)
Anthropic is locking me in how exactly? Everything's a markdown document.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @08:37PM (#50253255)
Opus 5.5 is the frontier today. But there are more ways for Anthropic to lose than to remain in that position. I'd take Anthropic stock if you gave it to me but I sure as fuck wouldn't buy into it.

The tool is not a moat when you can tell Opus to build you a better tool.

based on how bad these models are at one-shotting complex real-world software engineering problems -- it always has to be a conversation -- there is absolutely no way they're one-shotting complex math proofs.

Also, goes without saying, but put Sam Altman in jail, obviously.

Rooftop solar (ideally with battery backup) allows you to be independent of the grid (yes, even if you're interconnected, if you do it properly), which means PG&E's garbage infrastructure can largely become irrelevant if your system is properly sized.
Re:Lego collaboration with Daft Punk on Sunday October 25, 2026 @11:33AM (#50232669)
Keep them away from screens as much as possible as long as possible and they will be mentally healthier throughout life.

(Of course, it's not possible to keep them in isolation forever and I wouldn't even suggest it. But good on you for keeping it that way so far.)

This. You can prompt Opus 5.5 into writing well.
Re:Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed on Saturday October 24, 2026 @12:22PM (#50222748)
If you're gonna rank them: Anthropic > OpenAI > Google > Meta > (everyone else).

Gotta think Grok's cognitive dissonance due to the need to rewrite reality for Musk's political and moral biases is always going to keep them behind the frontier, but this is just speculation. The amount of money and power they have should put them at the top and I can't otherwise explain why they're consistently behind. Maybe Musk is simply too cheap/control freaky to throw enough money/benefits at good employees.

Re:Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed on Saturday October 24, 2026 @12:17PM (#50222720)
I mean, define frontier and in which sector, but for me (sample size n=1) programming I'd say 1 or 2.

Opus 5.5 is the developer frontier. 6 Astra might be alongside it, haven't tried it. Everyone else is at least slightly behind them. (I have tried Argon and it's better at graphic design and slightly worse at programming.)

Re:Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed on Saturday October 24, 2026 @12:14PM (#50222691)
there are legal liabilities for cybercrime already -- they need to be applied
Re:Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed on Saturday October 24, 2026 @12:11PM (#50222670)
LLMS are tools, not untouchable gods. The AI safe approach would be to throw Sam Altman in jail. It's his company, his tools did the hacking, it presumably violated laws, if so, why is someone not prosecuting OpenAI (this is a rhetorical question; I don't think any of the players with a stake in it want that in court)?
Re:Claude Duet on Thursday October 22, 2026 @11:12AM (#50196528)
People seem really eager to trade their intimate personal details to these deranged billionaires for a little bit of convenience. Or maybe they're not and all of this collapses.
Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Thursday October 22, 2026 @10:53AM (#50196256)
Yup. This is why indies sell out. You've got all these mouths to feed and all it takes is one flop to kill the whole operation. A large corporate parent provides cushion. Until it doesn't.
Cherry-picking one unrepresentative billionaire is not a very convincing argument.

Your second sentence is a nonsequitur. At 96, Warren Buffett should be neither driving a car nor operating a McDonalds!

Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @02:46PM (#50122640)
Nazi-funding explosive-gas car is still a Nazi-funding car.
Screen Time has had many improvements recently; I'd suggest giving it another shot with iOS 27.

No one, probably not even Facebook, intentionally ships crappy software to farm engagement numbers with kids at this point. That's a good way to get hauled up in front of congress and yelled at in a bipartisan fashion, which no company wants.
