I dunno about "most places". I definitely had to get a boating license, though for some reason the law had an exception for people born before 1978. A cursory search show most states have some sort of legislation regarding it. Many other countries have different legislation based on engine horsepower and age, but it's definitely regulated to some degree most places I've seen. I don't suppose you'd be able to paddle hard enough to cause serious damage

Facebook used to post sites you visited. Not even interacted with by liking, it would show that you have read a certain article. They still collect that information, but they no longer publish it on your feed and rather keep the information to profit off of themselves. It's close enough that I'd say it's the same thing.

That precedent was and still is legally used to federally regulate marijuana harsher than fentanyl, a precedent I strongly disagree with, so you'll have to forgive me for believing that the degree to which something causes harm matters more than the amount of misuse

On a level playing field where both are equally subsidized, solar and wind would still outcompete coal. Their point seems to be applicable to the degree to which harmful power generation is subsidized relative to regular power generation, not just the subsidies themselves.

Exactly! I read that riddle and thought "a couple islands over the international date line" solely because of the last line, but still had no idea what the name of these islands thousands of miles away from me were named. Might as well make the riddle who their little brother is, and make the answer "Fairway Rock", if niche knowledge is your goal. Which, completely to GPT-o1's credit, it did solve in a single prompt when I asked!

I still call my 12 year old cat a "kitty". If someone marked my answer as incorrect because "chicks aren't chickens yet" I would think they're wasting their time with riddles instead of actual intelligence testing. Besides, if the chicks were sellable to the farmer, why the hell wouldn't the farmer be able to sell them?

Yes! Or a situation where the public was not under any misconception at all, where there were multiple intermissions throughout the play calling attention to the fact that it was a work of fiction, but someone made up the idea of mass panic because it made for a good story that sold a lot of newspapers!
I would say that it's the responsibility of the reader to read any content in the context of which it's published. For example, to expect a radio play to be fictional as the vast majority of listeners did.

Pretty interesting how being anti-prison rape is considered an ideological argument. But hats off to the real winners of this situation: the bisexual rapists who get to rape no matter what ideology their captors have, I guess.

Jesus, sounds like it's just the UK prisons trying to project their awful "justice" system on their own victims. I give the American justice system a lot of shit based on my personal experience with it, but it sounds like police in general are struggling with maintaining their representation of justice in the modern era, especially with how publicized it can get when they fail to deliver.

Cis women who rape women and cis men who rape men have always gone to prisons aligned with their gender identity. The issue with the normalization of rape in prison is unrelated, and should be solved without throwing trans people under the bus

In some countries you have legal rights to information collected about you. This can include information collected by social media sites. Just because Facebook has a forced arbitration agreement in their TOS doesn't mean it's valid everywhere, especially in countries that nullify those clauses. The same goes with information collection clauses. Laws supercede terms of services.
And personally, while I don't mind users being able to be banned for harassing users, I do think everyone, including trolls, should have the right to information collected about them and their account

I've used multiples images of Christ to play with AI image models. Remaking the old "Jesus on toast" image was fun. Facebook is full of boomers sharing the Jesus face AI generated into scenes. I feel uneasy when religion is used as an excuse to discriminate against or murder innocent people, not when symbolism or texts are used for creative purposes.

Re:Does space dust fall on the roof of my house?
on Tuesday August 06, 2024 @07:57PM (#41176834)
I'm guessing the bottleneck lies in surface area to effectively collect samples rather than the effort to inspect samples and processing them to determine origin. The roof is going to have contaminants, sure, but so is any other collection area. Using a magnet to get iron based particulate then picking out rocks with unique elements is likely a lot cheaper than a purpose built facility to collect micrometeoroid samples with reduced contamination

I've been very confidently informed that these AIs are not AGIs, which makes me wonder what the "General" in AGI is supposed to mean and whether generalization is actually the benchmark for advanced intelligence. If they're not AGI, then wouldn't another word for that level of generalization be more accurate than "generalization"? It doesn't have to be "transcendence" but it seems weird to have a defined step we claim we aren't at but also use the same word to describe a process we know it does. I don't get the nuance of the lingo entirely, I guess. I'm just here for the armchair philosophy
