Re:Who Aligns the Aligners? on Monday September 14, 2026 @08:16AM (#49695587)
`p(doom)` is ridiculous nonsense. How do people even come up with those numbers? Some people just say "I think it's 20% that AI will wipe us out" but how did they arrive at this number? Yeah they just made it up out of thin air, that's right. Complete fabrication without any evidence to back up such a probability. It's not like an asteroid whose trajectory you measure and you have certain instrument tolerances and measurement inaccuracies, hence the laws of physics tell you that your prediction has a 20% accuracy. No, it's all just made up bullshit. Just like all the AI safety guys: They're professional bullshitters and have been all along. Doesn't mean they're wrong per se, but it means that if they're right, they're right because they guessed right.
Inflation babyyyyyyyyyy. See if your salary also raises by 10-20% this year. You're getting priced the fuck out of everything, have fun.
Of course. They literally spell their playbook out for you:

“We decide something, then put it out there and wait for a while to see what happens.

If there is then no great outcry and no uprisings, because most people do not even understand what has been decided, then we continue—step by step, until there is no turning back.”

Certainly they know about it. There is no way they don't.
Not just cyber security.
Re:Crypto investors face tax crackdown as 70% non-compliant on Thursday November 27, 2025 @09:41AM (#46069675)
The tax is protection money so that you don't get beaten and put in a cage. Do you know how statism works?
Huh, why? Minecraft is Java. It works perfectly fine on Linux, both the server and the client.
Next up: Fight the political class and the bureaucrats. Enlightenment step by step.
HN always cuts off these fluff words in the beginning, like "Why" and "How". Often, it completely butchers the title. I think it's a stupid policy, but here we are.
DOH is your friend. My regime poisons DNS and enabling DOH makes things accessible again.
Re:Windows 11 – There's still nothing worth my time on Tuesday February 04, 2025 @09:32AM (#42932793)
A lack of improvements I could stomach. What bothers me are the regressions! It's getting worse with every update!
Re:Stay Gold, America on Thursday January 09, 2025 @08:37AM (#42645294)
If Trump was killed, it could have started a civil war in the US. Be careful what you wish for.
So? The US dollar has funded terrorism in the Middle East for decades and we don't see the Feds becoming concerned about the way this currency works.
Re:96% of climate policy since 1998 failed on Sunday September 29, 2024 @09:22PM (#41692517)
Good. Now on to make it 100%. Stop climate communism and government overreach.
Re:How the psychiatric narrative hinders those who hear voices on Tuesday September 03, 2024 @02:46PM (#41437816)
When you say you 'hear' the voices, is it internally like remembering a catchy song and playing it in your head, or does it appear to come from outside of you, like when a second person in the room is talking to you and you hear it?
It's ridiculous clickbait then. I thought there was an actual fire inside the plane.
Re:Swiss Maps Are Full of Hidden Secrets on Tuesday February 27, 2024 @10:39AM (#39525313)
Swiss people are extremely humorous, at least if you don't do laundry 1 minute past your allowed slot. Light-hearted fun is something that is taken very seriously around here.
Re:Nitter Shutting Down on Saturday January 27, 2024 @08:23PM (#39161611)
Nitter is the only thing that made Twitter/X accessible without a goddamn account. Well, good bye, X.
Is there any place on the entire planet that _hasn't_ become more authoritarian in the past, say, 5 years?
Re:iCloud for Windows downloading other people's photos on Monday November 21, 2022 @06:50PM (#33699879)
Imagine having CSAM inserted in your videos, then getting persecuted for it. Oh wait, they already scan for it, good on them.
It warns a few seconds ahead of time. The tsunami appears a few minutes later. What are you gonna do, build a concrete tsunami wall in a couple of minutes?
Hello you absolute legends!
Re:Why Rust is a great choice for startups on Tuesday June 14, 2022 @08:01AM (#31737862)
Have you ever wondered what a "moved-from" object [0] in C++ contains? In Rust, such objects are inaccessible due to enforcement of the compiler. In C++, they are accessible. Have you ever wondered what performance implications that has? Have you looked into what the C++ standard tells us about "moved-from" STL objects, what state they are in?

[0] e.g. `b = std::move(a)`, what is in `a` now?

Re:Carmakers feel chip crisis easing on Monday June 06, 2022 @08:51PM (#31648493)
We don't notice any easing in the embedded devices industry. In fact, things are as bad as they ever were right now.
Re:Julian Assange Extradition Appeal: Day 2 on Friday October 29, 2021 @09:44AM (#29038306)
What do you even mean with "if we allow this precedent to be set"? The precedent has long been set. This man's life is completely ruined, and so is his health. They hunted and imprisoned him for a decade, based on complete bogus claims and fabrications. The rape case that is now dropped. The espionage case with a crooked lying key witness. The ship has already sailed, the evil won this time, no matter what the court decides. They will make up bogus charges until he shuffles off this mortal coil.
Re:Ask HN: Is HN having problem keeping up today? on Monday October 04, 2021 @03:19PM (#28750882)
Yes, that's normal. If you're not logged in, HN serves you a cached version that is a couple dozen seconds old. That's super fast. If you're logged in, HN has to generate the page based on the previous actions and properties of your account (e.g. upvotes, favourites, etc.) with every HTTP request.
> The researchers note their findings conflict with ongoing campaigns to promote trust in science as a way to fight misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic, mask-wearing and COVID-19 vaccines.

If you trust in science, you know that ordinary surgeon's masks and cloths cannot protect you from viruses. You also know that the COVID vaccines are experimental and have no long-term studies done on them. You also know that the risk of dying from COVID below an age of 40 is about as high as winning a large sum of money in the lottery. You also know that highly vaccinated countries like Israel had COVID cases explode, making you wonder how exactly the vaccine protects the people. Trusting the science means trusting the scientific method, not trusting some random authorities who have every financial and political incentive on the planet to claim what they claim.

Re:Linux Phones [are less secure than mainstream Android] on Sunday September 12, 2021 @09:37AM (#28501029)
That's complete bullshit propaganda and you know it. Remember how the govt simply pushed Covid surveillance apps to Android users without their consent? Yeah, try that on a bare Linux phone.
Re:But down in the underground, you’ll find someone true on Wednesday September 08, 2021 @06:36AM (#28455280)
Sounds like your mother is obsessed with control and worry.
Basically it remains "stuck" in position and completely stops moving, even if I wait 5 minutes. Poking it causes no reaction. I can just pick it up and put it away. It is either dead or it passed out.
