Re:Ask HN: What is your home media player setup? on Tuesday May 16, 2017 @03:27PM (#14352484)
There's a PS3 media server Java app you can serve out content from a PC etc. Not a full media center but can be handy.

We somehow survived w/o back in the day, and that feeling of constantly being contactable, or feeling you need to be, is debilitating imo.

I don't know too much about the RACS etc (father was a radiologist but can't recall him complaining about their equivalent in Aus too much, though it's likely the same).

If you have to be a member of this, and that's government mandated, then them profiting from that arrangement is a blatant monopoly isn't it?

Re:Two years of Rust on Monday May 15, 2017 @09:33PM (#14346740)
I've only dabbled briefly in it and read various articles about the new features, but that hasn't been my very limited experience. The syntax and namespace constructs etc all look quite arcane to me, and then there's the borrow checker. Not sure I'd call it simple and intuitive (at least yet, for me).

Not to make minimize the problem, but this feels a bit like privacy in IT (or lack thereof) due to government overreach.

People care much less about something when they are not directly impacted (or think they're not impacted).

Yes true, I might pick one up. The Atom I wasn't too impressed with in an old Shuttle but that has changed I think.
I didn't know it was mandatory, thought it was just practically necessary for VPN tunnels etc.

I've recently bought one of these and it's been great so far. Though its a NanoBSD currently you can squeeze an SSD in there.

Thanks for the suggestions, will have a closer look at this and PIT.
Re:Intel AMT Checker for Linux on Sunday May 14, 2017 @11:12AM (#14335909)
It's comical at this stage.
Re:Fuzzing Irssi on Sunday May 14, 2017 @01:04AM (#14334307)
This fuzzing is interesting stuff. Does anyone know of an in-process or otherwise lib for the JVM? Findbugs is mentioned in here but I'm not sure if that does fuzzing (maybe a plugin?).

Seems in my mind to be a nice complement to achieving code-coverage with testing i.e. whereas unit/integration testing might test the various code paths with a few good/bad values, this then throws every possible input value at them to see what breaks.

It mentioned she was seen sitting next to two German naval officers, but not talking.

Pretty tenuous but I guess some support for Germany.

Yeah I'm not sure on that figure.

I guess you can determine how many people are around you, that have a phone and it's switched on, with the wifi on as well (I personally turn off everything when it's not being used, mostly for battery reasons on this old clunker).

Reminded me of the Fat City game on the Apple II:

Never really thought about the name of the game, which involves smashing down buildings.

And unless I see a different selection to everyone else in Australia, the offerings have rapidly gone downhill, C-grade/fire-sale content. Some gems from time to time, but 98% unwatchable rubbish.

Edit: For the price I pay, I don't mind that too much though.

Personally the Nords seem to have their heads screwed on correctly to me, from what I can tell. Sweden or Iceland need any developers?

Australia has gone down the same path, both parties are in agreement on this stripping back of privacy, metadata collection and (what feels like to me) moving to a totalitarian regime. I don't think this can be fixed.

Bit pedantic but it's 'toe the line' [1]

Re:Rejection Letter on Saturday May 13, 2017 @12:31PM (#14331742)
That's not really achieving much.

"NSA hoard their knowledge of weaknesses in Microsoft Windows, a vitally important piece of their own nation's infrastructure, in case they'll come in handy againt some hypothetical future enemy. (I'm sorry, but this just won't wash; surely the good guys would prioritize protecting their own corporate infrastructure?"

Lol. I'd hate to rebutted by a publisher under any circumstance, but under ignorance would hurt more.

Edit: I think this went over my head while the Guinness was going down.

Re:Microsoft Issues WanaCrypt Patch for Windows 8, XP on Saturday May 13, 2017 @09:05AM (#14330747)
Windows Update can get itself into a state at times where it takes a long time to 'do its thing', I'd leave it an hour or two. There's a debug log under the Windows folder somewhere.

I'd also look into http://download.wsusoffline.net/ . It's an offline installer, has helped me out before when WU when south.

So does being able to enforce it. No one is going to sue the US DoD and come out winning.
Working fine on FreeBSD 10 for me, but it's not default yet as far as I know.

My thoughts on the matter are, this is all a pointless waste of time/effort, or otherwise said, an arms race of exploits/bugs that will go on and on and produce nothing of value, except justifying a military budget in various govs.

If they truly were doing their jobs and being of benefit, we wouldn't have the corruption we do, the paedo rings, the drug cartels etc.

To be secure, you have to beat the smartest people on the planet I would have thought, and unless you have a nation's resources, that's tricky. Tightening laws I'm not sure is the answer either, it feels like human nature expressed in Internet terms.

Re:Microsoft Issues WanaCrypt Patch for Windows 8, XP on Saturday May 13, 2017 @07:27AM (#14330419)
One argument for Linux here is that people in the know could have patched it themselves and recompiled the kernel or userland utility causing the problem. Or people after the fact, without having to wait for Microsoft. With Windows, you get what you're given, when they want to provide it (essentially).

> So we just use these stand alone Win 95/98 computers instead.

I mean, an airgapped Windows 95/98 is still reasonably safe I would have thought, if it stays exactly the same and no USB skullduggery etc.

There's the bitcoin ransom aspect, but presumably a worm like this could extract a massive amount of data from infected servers and send that back to someone/somewhere?

Bank transactions, patient medical data, stored passwords/keys/CA info, contacts, emails, configuration files, registry dumps for firewall rules etc etc. (I'm not that creative so there's probably a lot more that's been exfiltrated).

Pretty hellish knowing they'd let that quietly sit there, in the name of espionage. I'm not sure the benefits outweigh the damage they're doing, without even mentioning the chilling effect and lack of confidence this instills in IT everywhere.
