Re:Google Cars Drive Themselves, in Traffic on Saturday October 09, 2010 @04:35PM (#1775800)
It will take a decrease in sensor costs for this to become commercially viable. The "device" on top of the car is a Velodyne LIDAR system, which if I recall correctly, costs around $75k. Using a sensor that costs more than the vehicle it controls makes selling this difficult, to say the least.

I agree with your criticism from a quick look.

That being said, I have no skills to bother taking a look under the hood. Could be they've done some impressive stuff underneath, and it will manifest over time?

Simply for curiosity sake, it would be interesting to see some basic metrics on spam submission. A simple weighted list sorted by topic would be quite interesting to see.

Sitting behind an Audio console at work.
Re:Ask HN: Does anyone still use IRC? on Friday July 30, 2010 @04:21PM (#1562472)
I am rather interested in the response to this, for the same reasons.
Re:Poll: Are you a Programmer? on Saturday July 24, 2010 @11:59PM (#1544928)
Nope. I'm a hardware guy, but I found this place to be a great source of good news and reading.

Rather than code, I do machining, CAD, and design control.

Re:Ask HN: How do you name your projects/products? on Monday June 21, 2010 @07:17PM (#1450396)
For my projects on the side (generally hardware, I'm a mech guy...), I name them after a mythological creature. I just finished Seraphim, a multi speed epicyclic gearbox. Earlier was Juggernaut, a longboard truck with a locked roll axis.

For my work (robotics), we take the name each robot project based off the new features that define it from the older version. For example, we run the Erratic robot line, and currently offer the ERA-MOBI. Since it's now public knowledge, we released the ERA-XTD, or an extended and advanced version of the Erratic. Our new products are named based on function (STH-DCSG == Stereo Head, Digital Camera, Shutter: Global).

Sorry if it's not a strict scheme like you might be looking for, we tend to fly by the seat of our pants...

Re:Introducing Google Command line Tool on Friday June 18, 2010 @04:30PM (#1443479)
This is wonderful! At what point will it be ported to OSX?
Re:Git for the lazy on Thursday June 17, 2010 @07:52PM (#1440828)
As someone who is looking for a new code tracking solution at work, yet is not a programmer, this is wonderfully helpful.
Re:IFixit tears apart new Mac Mini on Thursday June 17, 2010 @12:18AM (#1437933)
The robotics company I'm working for uses the mac mini for one of our robots, and we had just finished a chassis overhaul based on the old model.

Time to go hit the CAD program again...

Re:It's Apple vs. Google in the New Phone Fight on Sunday June 13, 2010 @05:04PM (#1428200)
Having played with their new "Kin" line, I can confidently discount them (unless they make some serious changes in strategy). I was met with a device that made little sense, had no clear organization of tools and apps, and had a HORRID UI. I'm an iOS fan, but I would pick an Android phone over M$'s offering any day.
Re:Ask HN: Place to sleep in Mountain View on Sunday June 13, 2010 @12:56PM (#1427701)
The hostel up near Hidden Villa is pretty nice, and you can often times pick up a ride with some of the volunteers who work there.

That and there's some awesome kittens running around right about now.

Exactly. It for this reason that tools such as dd, rsync, and Time Machine exist.

I believe that Winer is talking about cases in which the hard drive will be replaced. If you know your disk has issues, but it still operates, shouldn't you be able to keep your old drive?

It seems shady to me to give over an old drive full of personal information without giving the user the option to keep it.

Re:Gotta wonder if Steve knows on Saturday June 12, 2010 @05:12PM (#1426529)
They've never asked me to create a separate account, only turn over the main account. I still don't trust anyone with my user account, and so made one name AppleSupport, and enabled FileVault on my user.

One would think that for a company so concerned with internal privacy they would care a little more for their users...
