News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

It's also good for systems with hard coded domains that ignore hosts files.

Windows will still connect to quite a few even if they are in the hosts file.

Perfect, thank you very much

I miss all the different shapes. Nokia alone had so many different shapes in the early 2000s, different layouts, wide ranges of colour ect.

It's just rectangles now

I can't provide any evidence but I will say any company not utilising the opportunity are missing out big time and it's actually extremely easy to do.

Try this yourself - use imgur and upload some reaction gifs to an account so you can go back and see the view count later.

Don't spam the images but work your way through some comments sections from /all, find some comments you can use your reaction gif on and head back to imgur a few hours later. I expect you may be surprised just how many views that one link you posted got.

Comments get way more views than a picture because people will read a comment more often as they scroll past than people who click a link.

Now imagine you're someone who wants to promote an idea or a product. The amount of eyes that go over what you type into that comment box has the power to drive big traffic. Even just a few thousand views from one comment looking at or even just thinking about that product or idea on a large scale with barely any effort.

I can't prove it happens but I'm more than confident it does.

Re:It’s time to give Firefox a fresh chance on Sunday April 15, 2018 @02:17PM (#16844011)
I never left FF. It's been a great browser for me and I've never been tempted to leave. Recently though since the big update that rendered half the add-ons I came to rely on useless - I'm in limbo with no alternatives to them or half-hearted promises that the dev will get round to porting them "sometime".

Chrome has a lot of them as well as alternatives available and for me this is where I do consider jumping ship.

I completely understand FF wanting to change things up in the name of performance and modernising but I do feel they didn't really appreciate how important add-ons are to keeping people using it.

A lot of those add-ons are many years old but still had 1000s of users who suddenly were in the same situation as me.

I'm guessing black ops that they don't want put on the books.
Re:Ask HN: Why do you keep coming back to Hacker News? on Friday October 13, 2017 @07:41PM (#15469898)
I don't comment here but have read for years now. I avoid commenting because I generally have very little knowledge on the posts or have anything worthwhile adding that hasn't been already mentioned. I love learning little bits about a lot rather than a lot about a little and am happy with the balance I find here between debate, information and humor.

While I'm actually commenting for once I'd just like to say thanks to everyone here for all the wise words and pieces of knowledge you have passed on over all the times I've been visiting and hope to keep reading for a long time to come.

I'll also add that I'm reluctant to ever mention this place on other sites that I do participate in out of fear of bringing in people who are more likely to turn the place into something like a reddit comment section rather than a very easy read of straightforward information from people who are knowledgeable on what they are discussing, rather than a race to the bottom of puns and trolling.
