I just finished “There is no antimemetics devision”, qntm has my respect it was an incredible book.

Ted Chiang is such an amazing scifi author. I find his work incredibly refreshing and thought-provoking. Personal favorite is the short story Exhalation, I think about it all the time and I highly recommend it.
no, because nobody is thinking...

I'm glad to have read this just to bring visibility to "the senior engineer death spiral". That was really helpful to me, it's something I am more or less experiencing myself due to this agentic era.

Now about this article, idk, maybe i'm just jaded on what engineering has become. My gut reaction is agentic engineering feels wrong.

Getting that on-call incident for a piece of code I own, when i've lost the mental map of what the black box does, it keeps me up at night.

Is the solution really going to be, "use ai for that!". Ugh.

> coasted to a complete stop

I’m not sure how you say that on a release that is literally about new surface hardware

So how is the blooming while editing code with a dark background?

Im also considering purchasing one of these for codework.

Until Linux has an alternative to anticheat, gaming on Windows is still king.

And until Linux implements similar abstractions in the Kernel akin to Filter Drivers in Windows, Linux will never have a proper anticheat.

Re:Ask HN: Is AI demotivating your will to code? on Saturday March 02, 2024 @04:10PM (#39575808)
I’ve found the opposite, it makes tedious tasks like looking up how a specific powershell function works, easy.

Hmm I can’t remember how to read a file into xml in powershell… ask gpt and save yourself 15 minutes

I the get the point of your comment, but the article does state that one of the proposed changes are that you can uninstall news and bing from the start menu / search.
I really hope they announce new desktop displays soon
Re:How many years to senior engineer? on Monday August 28, 2023 @01:04PM (#37297218)
Strongly depends on the company as well. In a big org it can take years of work at a senior level to get that title. And only if there is a “business need”.

I use Azure. Also going to be looking into Cloud PC or Dev box soon (also azure)

I’ve been using Remote Desktop to a windows environment in the cloud for a while. It’s been pretty great actually. As long as you have a Bluetooth mouse an IPad makes a great thin client in a pinch.

I know people want MacOs, but it’s a workaround that works.

Host the TOS on git and allow us to view it, easy
They are all getting more expensive and all losing quality content. It is becoming increasingly hard to find a specific show I want to watch. Sometimes it’s on Netflix, other times Hulu. Sometimes something I want to watch isn’t even being streamed. It’s just massively confusing.
Re:How Is LLaMa.cpp Possible? on Tuesday August 15, 2023 @09:56PM (#37141883)
Shameful? Just because you dislike it doesn’t mean everyone has to.
Re:What’s causing the rise of hoarding disorder? on Friday August 11, 2023 @09:48AM (#37088652)
The thing I have trouble ‘hoarding’ is tech. I don’t have a lot of it but it mounts over time. Old laptops/desktops. Gaming consoles, etc.

I feel that throwing these things away, especially the stuff with batteries, isn’t the correct way to handle it.

So I’ve kept it around meaning to do research to understand how best to get rid of it all.

Does anyone have pointers?

this is a project my girlfriend said yes to buying immediately. Until she saw the price. Its about $2250 too expensive. I know its cost and whatever. But to make this feasible for your average person it'd have to come down in cost ALOT.
Microsoft, at least, has not recalled workers at all.
So like Windows Group Policy?
If this is what is coming it sounds incredible
Anecdotal, but I’ve never once had a driver call me once
wow this is a massive privacy violation / gdpr issue. What can we do about this?

Tangent: I used to love reddit, i would actively pay for reddit gold just to support the site. I still have a hard time moving on, but this latest fiasco has set things in stone for me. RIP Reddit.

Re:Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace on Thursday June 15, 2023 @05:47PM (#36347032)
already happened for me, I've transitioned away from Google almost entirely.

The only place I interact with google these days is my Google TV. Here's to hoping they don't drop support for that as well.

Re:Montana becomes first US state to ban TikTok on Thursday May 18, 2023 @12:06PM (#35990008)
What VPNs should people in Montana and Utah use? Genuinely wondering the best option.
Re:How to lose your work using Undo Copy in Windows on Saturday May 13, 2023 @04:29PM (#35932379)
I think you’re underestimating how difficult it is to communicate cross team at a corporation as large as Microsoft.
I mean... they've already started charging a subscription fee for using your KEY FOB auto start after their trial period ends.

Enough to make me not buy a new Toyota ever again.

I deleted my LastPass data a few years back, now hopefully it actually got deleted…
Re:Stable Diffusion with Core ML on Apple Silicon on Friday December 02, 2022 @11:09AM (#33832378)
can't the battery problem be mitigated if you plug in your Macbook while running Stable Diffusion?
Re:Huawei phones automatically deleting videos of the protests on Wednesday November 30, 2022 @02:32PM (#33806305)
To me I read this as Huawei is already a “state controlled” entity. So this is egregious but expected by them.

Apple however is two faced. Saying that they stand for bigger ideals but quietly supporting the communist party by disabling airdrop.

Edit: I know it’s more complicated than my comment indicates. But it’s still a weird response by Apple none the less.
